X-BTF and X-T Crashes w Fullscreen, X-T error with windowed mode

Post by havoccau2020 » Sat, 17. Jul 21, 03:03

I just recently bought all the X games and DLCs as part of the summer sale on STEAM. I am having trouble getting X-Tension to work.

I can get X-BTF to run in a window, but when I try the same with X-Tension, I get the 16-bit desktop error code, which is weird, since I don't get it with X-BTF. Obviously, both games crash on startup after the splash screen when I try to run in fullscreen mode. I am running a 2K monitor, but I tried reducing my resolution to 1080P as some forums suggest. The games didn't crash immediately, but I still couldn't get it to run in fullscreen because it seemed to freeze and then exit. I've tried changing compatibility modes to XP, Win 7, etc., changing color bit to 16, etc. Here is my system info if it helps:

I can't see the full DxDiag but 4 different sound devices and drivers all going at the same time will not be helping. Also I cannot see the codec list to look for codecs known to be unfriendly to DirectX-based X games, nor see the Windows Error Reporting details for your crashes at the end of the DxDiag.

Have you worked through this Sticky thread?

There was only one thing in the sticky thread for X-Tension, and I have tried that.

I am new to the forums, but I didn't see a way to attach my DxDiag and MsInfo text files, so I only pasted a part of my recent DxDiag.txt.

OK, the best method for posting large files is to upload them to a reputable public fileshare site and just post the shared download link here. Otherwise you can split big text files into parts and post them across several consecutive posts in a thread.

Here are the links to my DXDiag:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1OrO9Nd ... sp=sharing

I've also turned off my Radeon custom abilities like Advanced Sync, GPU scaling, Radeon Chill, etc. I tried running the game with the monitor turned down to 1080p instead of my native 1440p. I turned on compatibility mode. Those didn't help at all, but I did notice at 1440p the game crashes on splash and also messes with my windows making me think it's crashing due to trying to force the monitor to a low resolution. At 1080p, the game doesn't crash, but every time I click on the application from my taskbar, the screen turns black before going back to my desktop. I tried running as an administrator, under XP or Win 7 compatibility, and under 16-bit color. I just don't get why I get the 16-bit desktop error when I run X-T under windowed, but not when I run X-BTF unless I change to a 32-bit setting.

I am also running a dual-monitor setup. Two 1440p monitors from my Radeon card.

Thanks. The codec list looks OK.

You do have 4 different sound devices and drivers working at the same time. Unplug any USB sound device you don't use when playing and disable any other sound devices and driver that you don't use in Control Panel, Device Manager, Sound/Audio Devices (right-click on a device in the list for a disable/enable pop-up - this is easily reversible).

Your Windows Error Reporting shows 3 crashes with X-T, one with D3DIM.DLL which is part of DirectX (Direct3D) and two with the X-T exe itself. That may be why you get different reports in different modes. They are all generic 'access violation error caused by a buffer overrun' errors which are not terribly useful for identifying the root cause. I'm struggling what to suggest next unfortunately but I would say to avoid any game managers, profilers or overlays while using these games if possible. It may be that further experimentation with different system settings and options would be your best bet.

We do seem to be seeing increasing numbers of crash issue reports with the older XP-era X games on modern systems, especially as the mix of new system hardwares, OSs, drivers, softwares and setting options gets more varied and complicated.

I unplugged all my Razer audio devices and disabled the THX sound option so I only had my Realtek speakers driver running. No dice at 1440p or 1080p.

I realize this game is two decades old and it isn't necessary for the storyline, but I really want to experience the whole X series and I'd feel bad. Since I bought this on STEAM, you mentioned turning off game managers and profilers? I have the game in STEAM and I have Razer and ICUE software running that optimizes my system and runs my RGB LEDS on my mouse and keyboard.

I meant any app that might set or reset options for graphics, etc for use with a specific game without you knowing or necessarily wanting it to. (We had a case where the poster was saying they had tried every setting and option combination - but a game profiler was just setting them back to the same values that it thought they should be every time they played.)

Would my MSInfo File help at all? Just worried that one might have info that could let me get hacked. I was pretty sure DXDiag didn't have any vulnerabilities.

I don't think so - or at least not in my case. It would be difficult (but not impossible) to get a dev to look at this issue, and I will try.

Unfortunately this is a known issue with X-T attempting to run it on many recent systems. We're aware of the problem but don't have any immediate solutions to offer. We'll let you know when we do.

This might not be a good question, but is there any way to change settings manually? I can get X-Tension to work in window mode by setting the resolation to 4x3x32 without the 16-bit desktop error message. But this only works on another computer where I can start the game in fullscreen. I can't get the game to start at all on my PC, but thought it might just work if could configure my settings outside the game and try starting it that way.

Any update on this issue?

On an unrelated note, I can no longer adjust the resolution of my window in X-BTF. I have not changed anything in terms of software, drivers, or video card settings. But BTF now launches only in 640x480 mode in window mode. When I change the resolution it changes, but as you know the window doesn't resize, so the game only shows a sliver in the window. When I exit and restart, the window is back to the default resolution, as is the game. I have tried uninstalling and deleting the leftover files in the X-BTF folder in STEAm and then redownloading. I have tried restarting PC. Nothing seems to work.

The devs have nothing new to add just now but they will check for any progress.

I notice you call it resolution when talking about display form factor which is more a display or OS feature. What actual resolutions are you trying (example 1920 x 1080(p) (60.000Hz), etc). These are usually set in-game with the general-use default one set in your OS graphics settings and/or graphics card control panel. I ask because the native modes resolution for your display and OS mentioned in your DxDiag may be above what the very elderly XBtF can actually deal with.

Re: X-BTF and X-T Crashes w Fullscreen, X-T error with windowed mode

I was able to play X-BTF in window mode at 1600x1200. Then one day, the settings went back to default so the window size was 640x480. When you up the resolution in window mode, the new resolution fills more than the window, so you only see a postage-stamp-sized portion of the game screen. Normally, I would just exit the game (SHIFT+Q) and restart it and the game would have the correct-sized window and resolution. But now, when I exit and restart, the game always defaults to 640x480. I have tried all of the allowable 4:3 resolutions between 1600x900 as well with window mode selected. Same issue. The game crashes if I try to run full-screen.

So basically, X-T has issues with current computers, it is a known and common issue, yet Egosoft is still selling the game and I basically have to hope for a fix someday? I get old games can be twitchy and need a lot of TLC to run. But I wouldn't have bought the franchise collection on STEAM if I knew I was playing blackjack on the games working still. Origins did this with Command and Conquer back in the Windows 7 era when they released the games as a collection and Generals worked on like less than half the PCs that had Windows 7 with no plans to fix the issue and no plans to pull a game from the store that really didn't work anymore. Command and Conquer is no longer a viable franchise. Correlation or causation?

The good news is that the devs are at least looking into this just now. No promises though that a simple solution may be found quickly.

When things were working but then suddenly start to act differently then it usually implies that a driver or OS update has changed how it handles the older game's situation - and that is something that Egosoft just has no control over.

Doesn't need to be a simple solution. I have no problem and realize it can be tricky to make old code work on new drivers.
