[X2] Crash on mission 3 cutscene when entering Brennan's Triumph

Post by ThomasAH » Sat, 7. Sep 19, 17:10

After seeing me play X4, my children are currently playing the older X games. X:BTF, XTension and all X3 titles work fine, but X2 always crashes when entering Brennan's Triumph during mission 3.

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K
GPU: Gigabyte NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti
RAM: 32GB
Sound: Gigabyte Z170X-Gaming 7 onbord sound: Sound Blaster Recon3Di
(but same crash with C-Media USB soundcard)
Game version: X2 1.5 (GOG and Steam versions)
Scripts/Mods: none/vanilla

A save game directly before entering Brennan's Triumph (from Danna's Chance):
https://www.dropbox.com/s/y5upm754dvt3lb0/X08.sav?dl=0
(not in this save game, but in another game the same crash happens when entering via Split Fire)

We tried (unsuccessfully):
  • using different screen resolutions
  • using full screeen and windowed mode
  • with and without EAX
  • with the on-board soundcard, and without it (and using a USB soundcard instead)
  • with the "mov" folder renamed
  • with GOG and Steam version
  • flying the ship into the sector manually and via autopilot
  • entering the sector via space suit
  • ejecting to space suit, sending one of our ships to follow another ship to enter the sector, ordering it back and only then entering the sector
Any idea how to solve or work around this issue? You would make a future generation of X players very happy

Re: [X2] Crash on mission 3 cutscene when entering Brennan's Triumph

Post by Alan Phipps » Sat, 7. Sep 19, 19:21

One of those threads you linked fixed the issue as follows "When I started X2, I ticked the 'ignore last settings, start with default' box"

Another had their save checked by a dev and it played through the mission OK.

One said it was a CTD only when a particular sound/speech file started. Is this the case for you?

Some just stopped posting in their threads and so we don't know if the issue was fixed for them somehow or not.

Your DxDiag looks OK to me. The fact that two independent game installs of yours see the same fault while most other players do not would lead me to believe that your two installs are using the same save and game settings. Therein lies a clue that either there is an issue or condition now embedded in the save, or that your game or system settings may somehow be contributing. I'm sorry this is so vague though.

I tried this with the GOG version and it did not help, the Steam version was freshly installed and had default settings.

That's why I attached the save, so ideally someone could verify this.

It happens when the cutscene starts. I could record a video of the situation if you like to see it.

Some just stopped posting in their threads and so we don't know if the issue was fixed for them somehow or not.
Your guess is as good as mine :)

I used the save file from the GOG version I uploaded here with the freshly installed Steam version (by copying the file to the game's directory, X2 does not use a central location).
I don't think that game settings are relevant, because I tried various combinations and the fresh Steam install (which uses fresh settings).
The GOG version was running with German language, the Steam version with English, so that doesn't matter either.

It could be the system, but as other cutscenes and the intro videos work fine, something must be special with the mission 3 cutscene.
(and maybe with the mission 5 cutscene, the one who used "ignore last settings" had problems with that mission and reported it in another thread)

I don't have Windows Media Player installed, could this be a reason? (but no other software/game seems to be affected by that)

By the way, we had the problem in mission 3 with two different and independent game starts (two sons -> two games), so if the problem is in the save, it occurred in both games.

"I don't have Windows Media Player installed, could this be a reason?"

It shouldn't be as long as you have the essential-for-X2/X3-games WMA sound codecs installed, such as from this Media Feature Pack - unless you already have them from elsewhere.

When trying to install the Media Feature Pack it says "The update is not applicable to your computer", probably because I don't have the N or KN edition.

I must correct my earlier statement: I have installed the Windows Media Player (because it was included with the base system), but haven't done the initial configuration that it asks for when trying to play something, where it asks to customize privacy settings and such. So the WMA sound codecs should already be there.

We could check that for you if you link an uploaded DxDiag.

What do you need from me that is not already included in the DxDiag output in my first post above?

Maybe I can ask for a workaround from someone who has installed X2 or can install it quickly: Load my save linked above, fly through the gate directly in front of you, watch the cutscene, save, let me download the save. This way we can at least continue from here.

Oops sorry. I'm so used to seeing either a full white text or a link.

Yes, the WMA codecs are present and correct.

OK, how to proceed from here?

Maybe:

i experienced the same problem and solved it, by entering the sector Brennan's Triumph from a different jumpgate. (I think west instead of north?)
Otherwise "Enabling alternate video playback" in the launcher might help.

Thanks for the information, but I doubt that those players are still following this old thread.

We have tried this from all directions.

Hmm, I don't remember having tried that. We'll see. Thank you for the suggestion!

I still do, and every time I open GOG Galaxy (which is multiple times per week) I see X2 still installed, waiting for a solution/workaround for this.

Heh, I admit to being both surprised and wrong then. I admire your patience and determination! :D

Good luck with your quest for a workaround.

Enabling alternate video playback doesn't help. (I'm now on Windows 10, so I checked without this enabled, too)

Regarding my (re)quest for a workaround, I'll repeat my yet unanswered request above:

After entering the gate, you're contacted by a Teladi who was searching for the AP Gunner. The Teladi just left, Bret is following him. You're tasked to examine the gate, which was secured with mines by the Teladi beforehand.

Thank you very much!

Loading it worked fine and leaving and re-entering the sector worked, too, so we can continue from here :)

Hi, could you help me with this too? I went thru all the same posts and workarounds I could as the OP and no way to get past the cutscene, this is my save, landed in a Danna's Chance factory:

Thanks in advance, I'm desperate

Wow thanks a lot!! Didn't expect any response, let alone that quick! Works like a charm!
In fact I downloaded the previous one you provided and already started from there, now I have my super-pirate ships back, yayyy!! :)

I looked into DxDiag but no other info other than X2.exe crash then I tried about everything with no luck, no idea what could be causing it.
I was even planning to open a VM with XP or install it in my Mac/Linux then proceed and get the save back, but opted to just load that file and carry on.

Thanks again, both these forums and discord have an amazing community, on par with this awesome X-universe.
I'm playing now every single one from XBtf to X3R to complete the whole pack and I'm quite impressed and having a blast, can't believe how good was X-T already.

Split wish you fortune!!
