First of all you need a place to upload your picture. Dedicated image upload sites, like imgbb and imgur*, allow you to upload files even without having an account there. Whereby I personally suggest creating an account nevertheless, as it gives you usually more control and options to manage uploaded files.

(*When uploading images to imgur, make sure to not share the image with the community, as this will make it publically visible in their own community image storage.)

Secondly, there are two ways of posting images: 1) by using img tags or 2) by posting a link to the forum directly.
1) By using img tags readers of your post will see the image directly, unless they disabled the relevant option in their forum profile. To properly use image tags, you post the link to the uploaded image between an opening and closing image tag, like in the following example:

Code: Select all

[img]https://herecomestheurltoyouruploadedimage.com[/img]

On a real example this could look like this

Code: Select all

[img]https://www.egosoft.com/x/xnews/img/201908_news_split_01_th.jpg[/img]
This would look like the following when posted in the forum:

For image tags to work the url must point to the image directly, i.e. not to a page where it is embed into an interface of that image sharing website. Additionally, using image tags is only allowed if the image meets the requirements mentioned in the forum rules: 100 KB and 640x480 pixel. If it exceeds these requirements in either dimension, you have to post a link.

2) Posting a link means really just that: You upload an image to a file hosting site, get a link and post it directly to the forum, so others can click on it and are redirected to the file hosting site where the image is displayed.

Some pages have rather longish urls, so it's worth to use url tags to shorten the link in a forum post:

Code: Select all

[url=https://herecomestheurltoyouruploadedimage.com]Here comes text[/url]
With the above example image this could look like this:

Code: Select all

[url=https://www.egosoft.com/x/xnews/img/201908_news_split_01.png]Here's that Split Vendetta Screenshot[/url]
And posted in the forum it looks like this: Here's that Split Vendetta Screenshot

There's a actually a third way of posting screenshots combining the first two and thus creating thumbnails: using the smaller image for a preview, while clicking on it will direct you to the larger version. This works as in the following example:

Code: Select all

[url=heregoestheurltothelargeimage][img]heregoestheurltothesmallimage[/img][/url]
Using the image links from above:

Code: Select all

[url=https://www.egosoft.com/x/xnews/img/201908_news_split_01.png][img]https://www.egosoft.com/x/xnews/img/201908_news_split_01_th.jpg[/img][/url]
Posted in the forum it gives you this (click on the image to be redirected to the large image):

Some image hosting sites give you the option to post thumbnails directly.

This is so worthy of becoming an FAQ. :)
A dog has a master; a cat has domestic staff.

Thank you for all the information, I shall do my best to sift my way through it !

All seems a bit long winded !

But then I suppose it’s to keep all that data out of the forum hub.
