Ship names

Post by ItWasntMe » Sat, 8. Apr 23, 00:41

Hello,
I've been struggling to find good names for my ships so I wondered what do people name their ships?

For frieghters I currently have:
For general use: Ramming Speed (Split Super Freighter XL)
For weapons and resuply: Alfred (Standard Mercury)

For fighters:
For exploration and general fighting: Foxy (Split Mamba Raider)
For the heavy fighting: Roxy (Terran M6)
When the other two are working for me: Die Already(Terran M3+)

So what names do you give your ships?

Edit: I wasn't sure on the actual names of the ships so I will update the names later.

I usually roll with FLO1. (First Letter of Organization 1) FLO2. (First Letter of Organization 2) +Any more that may exists OL* (Owner Location, Sector Abbreviation) GL** (Greek Letter) Purpose*** ST (Ship Type)

*If Applicable.
**If a Beta exists.
***If given one. And if its purpose is to buy or sell a single ware, then the ware is abbreviated, unless the ware is one word, in which case it is shortened if needed.

An example would be:
I.E. L.L.* C.P. Ep. S.W. Buyer Mercury

*Guess the sector. :D

As you can tell, this format is generally used for TSs. Fighters (M5, M4, M3, M8. (Yes, I know. Only the M3 counts as a fighter, but I’m grouping them as such for this post for simplicity.) )

If a fighter proves itself, or a ship has a distinct property, then it is given a unique name.

TSs will almost never get named unless it is a special ship. (i.e. The Mercury Elena Kho gives you in X2, in which case it’ll creatively be named ‘Elena Khos Mercury’. (Yes, no apostrophe, they don’t exist in X2. It bugs me a lot… like the Khaak… sorry, I mean Kha’ak.)

Fighters will probably be given a cheesy callsign.

Corvettes and up are a different story however, they do not have anything past the Organization Letters, unless they are designed specifically to be replaceable escorts with no “personality”.

Corvettes will have the prefix FLO1.FLO2.C. (Corvette)
They will have a cheesy name based on their purpose. If they are supposed to patrol, then they will be named something “defensive”, like the ‘Sentinel’.

So it’d be:
‘I.E.C. Sentinel’

Frigates will have the prefix FLO1.FLO2.F. (Frigate)
Again, name based on purpose, but theirs will be slightly more “commanding” then Corvettes. An assault frigate will have a name like the ‘Aggressor’.

So that’d be:
‘I.E.F. Aggressor’.

Destroyers and up will have the prefix FLO1.FLO2.S. (Ship)
Nothing has changed with the naming scheme, except again, more “commanding”. Battleships will have the best “commanding” name.

An example would be the:
‘I.E.S. Punisher*’.

*I usually use that name for my personal M2, or M2+. :)

So those are my names. :) Probably not what you were expecting, or meant, but my names are clear and concise and I understand exactly what a ship is for, why it is there, and what it is doing when I see it. It’s very efficient, but replacing lost ships is a huge pain… especially when you’re trying to run an empire that effectively owns a good portion of the map. Ooh, really makes me hate pirates and those stupid triangles. (I refuse to say their name out loud, for obvious reasons. It’s difficult to avoid accidentally saying a “similar sounding word.” And yes, they’re pyramids, but for some reason calling them ‘Triangles’ is catchier. :) )

It's a pirate sector that I can't spell but it is very good for testing PSGs or fighting futile battles with pirates that have PSGs. On that one I used it as a testing ground for my fighter and fighting skills. At the time it was a Split Scorpion which didn't work out so well so I saved for a Paranid Perseus and got my revenge. The only snag on that one is I spent hours killing pirates and capping ships but then found I couldn't keep them from being blown up.

Yeah I used a similar system for my station owned TS ships. I generally go with the sector, then the factory type and then what the ship is doing i.e. buying or selling. I have also recently started calling then Daves so I have HL PS - Dave the Seller or HL PS - Dave the Buyer. Thinking about I might change that to Sam the Seller and Bob the Buyer.

For fighters I call them what I feel like but because this means I can forget what type something is I also add the ship class in brackets at the end of the name.

Yeah it is annoying when your doing something in a sector or worse building stuff there and the next thing you know there is Kha'ak all over the place. ;-)

Thanks for that response. I was mostly looking for names here but I was also curious as how other people name there ships. :-)

Correct! :)
Ah, yes. That was always fun. I still remember the fun of when I got the Hyperion in X3:R, and I went through and destroyed all those annoying pirates. :) I don’t use PSGs, they’re too cheesy for me. And they also end up making me lose rep, because some stupid TS has to be in the way when I’m obviously going on a murderous rampage. It’s honestly a wonder that I haven’t reached X-TREME rank in fighting in any of my saves across the games yet with all the things I kill. Closest I’ve ever gotten is Combat Ace 2nd Grade, which was in X2. Though I do have another save for X2 that I’m working on where I’m either Combat Ace 3rd Grade, or Ace 1st Grade. I haven’t even left the initial Argon Sectors yet in that one, though I’m about to expand into Pirate Territory, and then Boron.

As for the names, I think we have vastly different ideas for what we should call ships.

…and the sector security completely ignores it, and then next thing you know, your ships are gone, and they’re attacking your station and then you get annoyed with the alert that they’re attacking your station until you’ve finally had enough and go kill them all personally.

Why would I give my ships real names? That gives them an identity, which means I’d have to pay them! They’re just free, soulless labor for my own Empire.
