Farnham's Legend is a science fiction novel set in the X series. It was written in German by Helge T. Kautz, and has been translated into English by Steve Miller and Andreas Fuchs.

The novel was published by Egosoft in 2005.

There is why X series is named "X" and not "Y" or something else (according above source):
Farnham's Legend wrote:"Seven years ago," Admiral Molander summarised, four hours later, "we were able, at the cost of two lives and the heavy salvage vehicle Rii-4, to capture a heavily damaged space ship that had emerged into the solar system. It was a Terraformer craft, with a drive system capable of inter-stellar travel without jump-gates. We are quite sure it was a prototype that dropped back into normal space near the QUASI Synchrotron due to either failure or miscalculation."
...
"Oh, and by the way, we kept it quite simple when it came to christening the craft. The proposal to name this experimental ship simply X, though, came from the civilian scientists, not the military. It got stuck quickly, as you can certainly imagine." They smiled again and Elena judged by their relaxed faces that they had recovered enough from the trauma of the Admiral's briefing to follow her more detailed analysis. For the next fifteen minutes she described in detail the structural modifications carried out on the X and went over each step of the following day's scheduled test flight.

The experimental craft, X-Perimental Shuttle, X Shuttle, "X", is the vessel that that player character (Kyle Brennan) flies in the first game of the series: X: Beyond the Frontier. It is no wonder that name of ship is used for game, since that game is about the adventures of that ship.

Then they made sequels. First "extension" named X-Tension and then X2, X3 ...
It is natural to use that name (X) in the name of the place too.

After addition of Terrans the "X Universe" has been referred to Commonwealth of Planets, or something like that (to keep Sol separate ?).
