X2 - Sector Patrols - Advice Wanted

Hi, I want to set up some sector patrols to protect factories and freight shipping.

a) What is the best way to set up sector patrols?

b) what size and mix of ships would you reccomend?

any help or advice apprciated.

a) if you can afford it 1 ship per sector, 2 for dangerous sectors.

b) M6, Ospray, Centaur or Nemesis beings the favs. Look at their stats and see what you like. I recomend Centaur or Nemesis as Ospray is Expensive and overkill, only use if you other corvettes die.

b) depends on whether you will be in sector much. If so, nothing less than an Osprey is an option, anything else will be destroyed by a cluster in sector eventually. Even an Osprey will have some tough fights this way. On the other hand, if you are talking about OOS only, the Hydra has points to recommend it. It has the fastest intercept speed of any M6 that is tough enough to win OOS fights reliably. The first ship to bust a cluster usually warrants its full attention.

Yes, Osprey definitely can succeed in and out of sector. But it is expensive and slow.

Dragon is not very good. Its weak shield will kill it eventually.

A pair of M6 can work. One idea is to have fast leader (Hydra), which gets all the attention, and slower gunboat (Nemesis) that wipes the bad guys out.

However, I myself prefer Centaurs. Buy at Argon Prime, install jumpdrive and fuel from Terracorp in Home of Light, and then the ship can go anywhere. One 125 MW shield, two BHEPT (usually found in Argon Prime) and two GHEPT. Reasonable amount to find or make.

A lone Centaur in sector is dead meat. A pair should be quite ok, at least out of sector. Centaur is simply very easy to get and kit.

Personally I prefer to use a Paranid Nemesis, bought and equppied at paranid prime. Set it to patrol one sector and then give it 5 or 6 Novas, L class with fight command 1 and 2, set to protect the Nemesis. I have used this set up in 8 sectors so far and am yet to lose a ship or have to do any repairs. My patrols take on xenon and Khaak and depending on sector, pirates. So far they havent encounted anything they can`t handle and i have watched lots of little battles OOS where my patrols make short work of any attackers.

Yes m3's come into their own when backed up my an m6. I have used Two Centaurs as Wingleaders for small Nova squadrons. Seems to work reasonably well as it stops enemies ganging up. In most cases is better to be the mob yourself; unless you are an Ody. Also used Perseus on occasion because they have better speed than the Nova but alas no rear turret for missile defence. OOS however probably not an issue.

Sector defense: single centaur OSS is enough, just add 2x M3 to protect this M6 for better results (Perseus, Nova or Baraccuda). If you visit this sector frequently use Osprey. You can also use Nemesis, but be careful to equip HEPTs OOS and PSGs in sector. Stationed M3s is a total waste.


Multi sector patrol: for this you will need more money, but you can protect the trade lanes in a much better way.
For exemple
Set 1 centaur + 2x M3 for CBSW-Ore Belt-CBSE
Set 1 centaur + 2x M3 for Home of Light-Ore belt
So totally with 2 centaurs and 4 Novas you can secure 4 sectors all the trade lanes in Ore Belt.


M3 escorts for M6s are only necessary for some pirate packs. Sometime couple of pirate M3 and TS can took down a lone M6. Set pirates as friend from the command console, this way your patrols will engage only pirates that are attacking to one of your properties. Do not forget to set commands for turrets as: attack all enemies.

I agree completely with the Osprey- my fave ship. Great in any situation.

However i dont agree that the dragon is a poor choice for OOS patrol. Fair enough, the shields make it a little hairy when you watch it on the sector map, but it has an APPC. Remember, OOS is all mathematical, and the APPC destroys any threat. I have them roaming a few sectors, and not one has been killed yet. Plus there speed makes them great at intercepting.

OOS is a number game and APPC, BPPC, GPPC, GHEPT, and IonD all have the same number (8000) in X2.

I wanted to set up a sector patrol at ore belt.

1 centaur.. 4 x perseus... But the khaak cluster(the big one) comes my boys aren't doing a proper job of killing the m3 first... Any specific commands to concentrate their attack?

That sounds like something worth trying. If I was doing this today, I'd probably use two hydras on different patrol routes. Centaurs are too slow, IMO. If you are in the sector, you should always just kill the Khaak yourself (in a Dragon, Osprey, or "something bigger").

There isn't a way to improve the targeting. According to the documentation, patrol ships target the enemy ship with the highest threat level, so they should be targetting the KM3 first. However, in practice the patrol commands may not be as good as you expect. I've found that using escorts is especially disappointing: the leader and wingmen do not stay together, which defeats the whole point of the exercise.
