How does Drone Command Software work?

I figured by its description that it would allow fighter drones to redock at my ship but no matter what I try they just explode in space.

I found this old thread that seems to imply that is exactly what the software is supposed to do. I don't know what I'm missing to get it to actually work.

Those aren't controlled by that software. However, you can click on the fighter drone's listing on the map and you'll see "undeploy" on the popup. That will turn the drone into a crate that can be recovered.

While I have an active topic about drones, how exactly does one use a freight drone? I've never found the command that utilizes them.

I think it's Trade k1 or Mk2 that controls Freight Drones. They can only transfer between ship and station in FL, so only useful for TLs.

For freight drones you can just eject them, then control them via the drones command console.

Also if you have the drone command software you can use the transfer freight command that uses multiple drones to transfer wares between stations and ships
