Split Mule collides with station on undocking.

Post by Chull » Fri, 11. Jun 21, 20:11

Having Found out that the Split mule collides when in you're in sector while leaving stations, does any know if the other races armoured transports have the same issue?

I will get round to trying them all out and watching them dock and undock, but if anyone has already given them a test I would love to know, as they are quite useful.

Thanks

I mostly use Athena and the Athena seems to be able to undock without getting blown up usually.
I had one blow up by my complex but that was actually just when i was expanding it so i think it might actually have gotten entangled in some new connections.

I love athenas and mules. Mules particularly for cutting down the time it takes to restock my Spacelab. I have seen plenty of mules detonate on undock/dock.

I agree with the use of Athenas: the extra 10m/s doesn't seem worth the downsides of the Mule's relative fragility, & I've never seen Athenas have problems with docking/undocking from any station type.. so far ;)

Mule is faster than Q, Athena is not :)

That fact can save some ships in world of random xenon attacks

Haven't managed to bring Mules IS to explosion or damage yet. But if you look at the undocking process, you can see that part of the docking arm extends into the ship. The collision detection should actually prevent damage at this moment....
I'll have another look at the ship in 3dsmax and move the center position on the model. That should make it work.

Mercators have the same issue. Not very frequently, but it does happen occasionally. I made a thread about that earlier. Seems to be a more common issue with the new TS types.

Ah! Very good point that I completely overlooked

However, I rarely use Trade Mk3 on such large ships even as STs because I find them inefficient (ie travelling around with mostly empty cargo): an Athena with a couple of Pandora speed & 1 Pandora rudder tuning is perfectly adequate for me as a personal bulk hauler; the rest of the time I'll use standard TS's such as Caimans or Mistrals for station jobs or Mk3 trading, with an occasional larger (but still cheaper & faster) TS for bulk station hauling (mostly energy for initial setup).. all this prior to setting up 'plexes with their own integral energy supply ofc

Have the same issue with the Mule, spent quite a bit of time to find one available, and as I love the looks as I was hoping to make mine a mini mobile base. But the clumsy undocking has mostly scuppered that plan.

Yeah. Ultimately the deciding factor of whether or not to use a ship shouldn't rely on whether or not it explodes when docking. :(

Is disabling collision during docking procedures an option? I know this is done when autopiloting through gates, maybe it could be applied here as well.

As far as I know, the collision is turned off, but only for a certain time. When the collision then takes effect again, the mule does not seem to have gotten far enough away yet.
Maybe it collided also with another ship? Because I can' t reproduce this error in my game...

Anyway, I have adjusted the scene file a bit. But unfortunately this is only applied to newly created ships. All already existing mules keep the old behavior. :(
