How to start the mod!! - help guide!

Hi everyone!
I wanted to ask if you could give me a little guide to start modifying the game!
I would like to add a ship (taken from the split raptor) insert a few more turrets and a few fewer ships!

I have already modified some time ago the old x2 x3.
Now I ask you what it takes to get started; software to extract files, editor for .xml, 3d software for models!

Unfortunately I didn't find (or see) the ship modification link!

Let's say a guide for dummies!
example:
to add the ship open the file "xyz" with the program "prog"
etc.

Unfortunately I don't find such a thing! could you send me the direct link please if it exists!
