Bug: Cap Ship Disapears When Fired On - Seems resolved by update/reinstall.

Post by mattig89ch » Wed, 6. Oct 21, 02:33

I have an issue, that I didn't realize was a bug until now. Sometimes, when I fire on a ship to begin cripple and capture it, it will disappear. I thought this was a feature, but was getting frustrated with trying to capture a Scale Plate Behemoth, in Hatikva's choice 1, and asked about how to prevent it from jumping away on Reddit. They informed me, this is absolutely not a feature, but a bug. And should be reported.

Video of the bug: https://odysee.com/2021-10-02-15-44-51: ... cf119616e5

I am playing Version 4.0, with all expansions installed

System Specs:
Memory: 15.5 GB
Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-7700HQ CPU @ 2.80GHz × 8
Graphics: NVIDIA Corporation GP106M [GeForce GTX 1060 Mobile]
Operating System: Pop!_OS 20.04 LTS
Operating System Type: 64 Bit
Gnome Version: 3.66.8
Windowing System: X11

I am willing to provide my save as needed, but I will need to know where it is, where to upload it, and where to send it.

Saves are in the documents folder.

Code: Select all

Documents\Egosoft\X4\{SOME ACCOUNT NUMBER}\save
Usually they are uploaded temporarily to some sort of cloud storage provider. One Drive, Google and Drop Box all provide a limited amount of cloud storage for free which is more than sufficient for purposes such as providing saves. Once the issue is solved the save can be deleted from the service to reclaim the used space.

Is there a reason why you are not on 4.10 and does the issue happen there too?

@mattig89ch:
I had similar issue back in 4.0: viewtopic.php?f=180&t=441690
Haven't (re)tested that save yet in 4.1.

Even on Linux? I would be more then willing to use something like drop box, no problem.

Edit: Quick update, there is no Egosoft folder in the installation directory, or the [user]\Documents directory. I've also searched in my home directory, but its not stored there either.

I wasn't aware there was a newer version until now.

One other thing of note, this also happened on Linux Mint, with a previous version. I thought it was a feature, so never thought to report it (see reddit thread).

How did you search?

Code: Select all

find / -type d -name X4 -ls 2> /dev/null

I do apologise. That advice was for Windows users and likely is not helpful for Linux users.

After updating, can you confirm if the issue still exists or not? If it still does then please provide a not modified save made with the 4.10 (latest at time of writing) client that demonstrates the issue. The playthrough could have been started with an older version just as long as it was most recently saved with the 4.10 client.

Found it under:

Code: Select all

/home/matt/.config/EgoSoft/X4
here is the save file folder:
https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/ ... image0.jpg

Edit:
I will try to install the latest version, and see if it resolves this issue. Sadly, simply updating the game doesn't quite work with the GOG installers. I need to remove the older game version, download the installer for the newer game version, and then install the newer game version. But, getting this bug to re-materialize might be time consuming. If my older saves are not compatible with the newer version, I will need to start from scratch. and building up to a point where I'm trying to cripple then capture a capital ship takes me a while.

2nd Edit: plus, needing to re-do all my work again is...depressing.

Nicely in location for config files, according to freedesktop.org's XDG spec: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/XDG_Base_Directory

Your link makes no sense. Upload the savegame file to some "cloud" share-point.

Old saves should be compatible with new version. That is one of the design decisions that Egosoft has had in all games.

(If you have space, then you can rename, rather than remove the old install -- although there should be no need to keep the old.)

@ mattig89ch: I suspect you have provided a dynamic link (such as 'latest uploaded file' etc) rather than a static link always to the save.

Thanks, but that link covers all of your saves. Which is the one with the suspect ship and what steps do the devs have to take to see the issue on loading it?

Save 6 has guidance to the ship in question.

I installed the latest version I can download off GOG. When I fire on the ship in Hatikvas choice 2 (or is it three?) it doesn't just disappear. Either the fresh install fixed the bug, or maybe the newer vesion did. I would like to leave this thread open for a bit to be 100% sure though.
