[SOLVED] Random Vulkan Crash - exit code 1028, err -4

Post by user1679 » Fri, 11. Jun 21, 10:02

I've got several weeks worth of gameplay (not all at once), including several new starts and have not had any graphics related issues until now. Of course I have also never been
in the sector where the crash triggered before too.

This is a new game and I was just running from gate to gate to discover as much of the galaxy as I could in the hour I had to play. I was in Zyarth's Dominion IV, getting
ready to dock my Elite Sentinel at the shipyard so I could buy some flares for my trip into the Matrix when this crash appeared.

OS: Win 7 x64
CPU: i5 7600
RAM: 24 GB
GPU: GTX 1050 Ti
VRAM: 4GB (per nVidia control panel)
Shared VRAM: 16 GB (per nVidia control panel)

NOTE: My game is modded however the mods I use are things that change AI behavior and should have no bearing on the Vulkan engine.

* No, the support page did not open
* The crash occurred on GPU driver 461.40. I updated to 466.77 (latest at this time) but I don't know what triggered the crash so it might happen again

You should not make assumptions wrt to what can cause the issue. Listing the mods you are using is the least to do.

You mention driver update, has it happen since? If so restate it here and share DxDiag and vulkanifo and steps before the crash.

It hasn't happened again but I didn't have time to get to the same sector. I will try later today and reply again (even if there's no crash) and include my modlist.

I know the error is VK_ERROR_DEVICE_LOST and can be caused by desynchronisation, overheating or driver errors (to name a few), but from my research, this error is widely seen on driver versions above 440.100. It's still reported on other games for versions:

450.66
450.80.02
455.45.01
455.50.xx
460.27.4
460.32.3

Update:

This might have been a bad driver installation. Before I reinstalled my drivers, I used vulkaninfo to check which version was present and it was different than what is included
with nVidia's 466.77 driver. I had Vulkan version 1.2.176.1 installed but the nVidia driver when installed on my test machine includes Vulkan version 1.2.162.

So I manually removed Vulkan from System32 and SysWOW64 and reinstalled my nVidia driver. The vulkan version now reads 1.2.162. It's possible another game I installed updated the
Vulkan runtimes and the nVidia drivers didn't like it.
