Setting up an in-game joystick modifier for increased functionality

Without having to resort to using thrustmaster software is there a way to set up joystick modifiers to expand the number of functions available to us when using joy/throttle combo? I'm using T1600mFCS

For instance mapping toggle flight assist, that already uses a keyboard modifier (CTRL) so I would hope it's possible and I'm missing something, to say Joy button 1 + 9?
