Controls Diagrams

Im struggling to get engaged with this game and it’s because of the controls. I’m sorry I am the way i am, but this has been a significant barrier to entry for me, on many games...

As with Elite Dangerous, which I had very little trouble with controls, I would like to use a dual shock controller for first person and a warthog for flight, menus etc. I feel this is a very reasonable and logical way to want to play this game. It works wonderfully in ED.

I have searched extensively for a stock warthog controls diagram. Just this diagram alone would help immensely.

Thank you,

David

Is the default Warthog profile, which you can find under "Settings->Controls->Load Profile", of any use to you? See the Joystick and Controller Configuration and Options page of the X4: Foundations manual for reference.

I’ve loaded that, my problem is knowing what does what. In looking back at how I learned to play elite dangerous, with the warthog, it was the control diagram that allowed me to succeed. A quick visual reference that allowed me to deploy the srv, open and navigate the galaxy map and plot a course, open the system map, find and select a destination, deploy the cargo scoop, jump to supercruise when my hyperspace target was obstructed by a planet, increase sensor range, switch between weapon groups, engage night-vision, boost, etc etc etc.

Again a visual reference quick enough as to not let crippling frustration discourage me back to playing warframe or destiny.

I hope this makes sense.

Another, related issue is the ability to accidentally remap an existing button...the frustration and confusion this creates is astounding. Elite warns you when you try to do this, which helps immensely.

But given the choice of having either a visual control reference diagram or an existing keymap remap warning dialog popup, I would choose the diagram. It helps keeping engaged while also serving as an accidental button remap reference.

Here’s the precise stick diagram I’m talking about that I used for elite...

So, I just went through and mapped the default Warthog mappings on some blank diagrams I got from Elite Dangerous.

It sure seems like there are MANY unbound keys. The keyboard I use is barely suitable for typing a system name in elite, which is the only thing it’s used for. It’s a tiny little Bluetooth keyboard...and I have almost no confidence I’ll be able to play this game as it still depends WAY more on a mouse and keyboard than I was hoping.

Are there any other critical options I can map to elevate keyboard dependency?

Studios need to budget for this and design for it from the very beginning...call it tactile immersion or whatever.

Ugh...I’m highly discouraged.

And please don’t get me wrong...this is more of a me thing than anything else, and I know it. No one can discourage me like I can, it’s infuriating.

Grrrrr...I’m really trying here. Got the anomaly mission, on step “locate anomaly”, k. This will be my 4th attempt to reach it...I keep getting destroyed by what appears to be a fleet of ships, no less than 30. I’m still over 20km out and a sea of red crush’s me in about a second, maybe 2.

I would advise that you stick with a single topic per Tech Sp thread if you want dev attention to that issue or request. Using the thread for general gameplay/balance comments that may derail it just gets it overlooked (no matter how valid the additional comments may be).

Do you have a Steam controller? With one of those, you can avoid using a keyboard completely, if you like. It takes some work setting up for X4, but I can share my current setup. What you could do it use the steam controller for map and walking around and the joystick for everything else. I used a HOTAS for everything previously, but I find the Steam controller much better personally.

I use a dual shock 4, but I’m very familiar with steams impressive controller support. I play elite dangerous on pc and PS4 and steam allows me to turn the touch pad from 4 functions to more than 12...they’ve done a great job. Did you export your steam controller configuration? If so, I’d love to give it a go...thank you.

Right now I’m making progress with the warthog, the map is proving difficult, but I’ll open another thread about that.

But I too really enjoying gaming with a Gamepad...tons, I just love love love the DualShock4.

Thx again man

My config isn't totally done, but I can export what I have. I think it requires some minor tweaking in the controls settings.

K...and do you keep the stock in game mouse/keyboard bindings and let the steam configurator do all the heavy lifting?

Let me know the name you export it as, k.

Sorry for the delay. Is this visible for you? You might need 3.0 for all functions to work. steam://controllerconfig/x4%20foundations/1958069468
