2.5 X4 will run but not open - Inadequate graphics cards.

X4 worked properly on my system a few months ago, but does not any more. Unfortunately, I do not remember which version it was. Currently, when I run X4, the game does not open, but it is displayed as 'running' in Steam, and is in my 'Processes' Task Manager tab using 66,584 K memory, but 0% CPU. I have already attempted to reinstall X4, with no success. I am running no mods, and have done a clean reinstall of the latest Nvidia drivers. I do have two display adapters, but disabled my 650ti through the control panel in favor of running X4 on my 1060, which yielded the same results as before. Frankly, I am at a loss as to what to do. I love the time I have spent in the game, and appreciate any help I can get.

Both of your graphics cards have only 2GB of dedicated VRAM. The minimum spec is a card with 3GB of dedicated VRAM.

Also you have many different sound devices and drivers on the go at the same time and you have a default generic Microsoft driver for your Realtek onboard sound chipset. Disable what you do not use in Device Manager, Sound/Audio Devices (right-click on a device for an enable/disable pop-up) and update if possible from the device manufacturer's site any that you keep. If you keep the onboard sound then get Realtek HD Audio Codec R2.82 from here.

Thank you for the help! Unfortunately, disabling the unused sound devices and updating the sound drivers did not help. I do have questions about my GPU hardware, though. All GPUs I see advertised show only one number for RAM, but in DXdiag, it shows three entries. For my GTX1060, the numbers are:
Display Memory: 1669 MB
Dedicated Memory: 1940 MB
Shared Memory: 3825 MB

Which total to a little over the 6GB advertised. You quoted me the number 2GB of VRAM. Does shared memory not affect video processing? I tried looking this up, but it was difficult to find any useful information. If I were to shop for a graphics card that could run X4, what would I look for? I still only see one number advertised for RAM, and it still seems that 6GB is in the middle-upper range of cards. I love this game, but I don't know if I can afford an $800 graphics card!

Also, if my graphics card is insufficient, why was I able to run the game on previous versions, but not this version?

Dedicated graphics memory is the fast VRAM on the graphics card. Shared memory is a portion of your far slower system RAM reserved for graphics working and the total graphics memory is the VRAM + shared + overhead.

Obviously as the game is updated, tweaked and expanded upon with release of updates and later DLC, the strain on system components is far more likely to increase than decrease. I'm not an Ego dev but I have noticed several posts saying that system and device performance is becoming more critical as the game evolves, and conversely I don't recall any saying that performance on lower end systems is improved or more stable.

You might be lucky and an optimisation or bug-fix in 2.60 or 3.00 might make the game playable for you again with your current system - but I wouldn't bet money on it.

The GTX 1060 is physically only available in 3GB, 5GB and 6GB models. It is not physically possible for a GTX 1060 to exist that is 2GB.

I have a feeling this card is "fake". If it is fake it is a much older GPU which has been BIOS modified to report itself as "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB" when it is not even a GeForce 10 series GPU.

It is not the advertised 6GB of memory that the GTX 1060 should have. If it was then the Dedicated Memory field would read something like "6080 MB" (as I do not own such card this is a guessed number, actual number will likely be different but within a few percent).

For example here is a listing of my GTX 760 card. This is the 4GB model and so can run X4, and does so pretty well considering it is technically below the minimum requirements listed GPU. Some fields were omitted from the listing as they are irrelevant.

As one can see, this is a 4GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 GPU which is correctly reporting 4052 MB (~4GB) Dedicated Memory. Also notice how large the Shared and Display Memory are as a result, since they are proportional to the dedicated memory.

Assuming by "video processing" you mean rendering and not video encoding then yes, technically shared memory does affect it, just not in X4's case. I am guessing the reason the developers decided not to use shared memory is that any kind of use of shared memory on a discrete GPU has a significant performance impact, to the point the result might be so unplayable that it is not even worth trying.

Well a genuine GTX 1060 works perfectly, especially the 6GB models. I am even running a GTX 760 and that works perfectly, and any GTX 1060 is a lot better than my GTX 760.

Do you really have 2 GPUs installed? It is listing the other as...

So do you really have a GTX 1060 and a GTX 650 Ti installed? These would be 2 separate PCIe graphic cards installed into PCIe expansion slots.

If you do have 2 separate GPU PCIe cards installed then try removing the GTX 650 Ti. That is a 2GB GPU and maybe it is confusing your graphic drivers. After removal of the GTX 650 Ti use Display Driver Uninstaller (third party driver removal program) to uninstall the graphic driver and then clean install the latest graphic driver from NVidia. Hopefully your GTX 1060 will now correctly show 6GB of dedicated video memory and X4 will run perfectly. If not then the following paragraph may still apply in some respect, unfortunately.

If you only have 1 GPU PCIe card installed then you have been scammed. The GTX 1060 6GB you brought was a BIOS modified GTX 650 Ti (hence why it only has 2GB of Dedicated Memory) that had its identification changed to try and fool you into thinking it was a 6 GB GTX 1060 rather than a GTX 650 Ti. If this is the case it is a scam and fraud you have unfortunately fallen victim to. Depending how recently you brought the GPU you may be able to invoke consumer protection legalisation to try and get a refund.

Pretty much any genuine card with 3-4 GB of Dedicated Memory can run X4. Even my old 4GB GTX 760. Newer and more high end cards will just do it better. One does not need a $800 GPU, one can likely get GPUs for $200 or less which will work fine.

Just a thought..
Could it be that your graphics card has developed a RAM fault. So only the first 2GB is working?

This would account for it working in the past, but not now

Seems unlikely. I would think the GPU would still try to address the other 4 GB of memory, having all kinds of errors as a result.

If this was not the case, then nothing would stop people buying lower end GPUs and soldering more RAM chips onto them. A quick Google search has shown lots of people had the idea but I do not see anyone having pulled it off.

In any case if the card is defective and they do not want another 1060 as a replacement then the cheapest, newer from NVidia, replacement would be the GeForce GTX 1650 with 4GB of memory and a $149 launch price. Due to increased competition from AMD and winter approaching one may be able to get it at an event better price.
