I think they dropped Win7 support not because of Win7 but
because of lacking CPU instructions that the new physics use.
So if you install Win7 on a more modern CPU the game will run.
Unless someone creates a patch that "fakes" those instructions
like they did for Control and some other games I used to play.

I recommend reporting 1 bug per thread as it helps the devs keep track of the issues and not accidently miss some.

At least some cases of this have been reported previously. Given the player is free to leave that part of the storyline at any time after the jumpgate reactivation, they can fly straight into the following boron sectors and explore them for themselves. This results in the silly situation where the player resumes the storyline to have everyone "gasp" that there are Boron there, even though the player is now well aware of it and has been for some time and Boron are likely already using the sector to trade with the Argon.

My suggestion was to deactivate the intermediate jumpgate between Watchful Gaze and the other Boron sector until the player progresses the story sufficiently, preventing the Boron and the Player having an earlier encounter and breaking the illusion of discovering them. The problem with this approach is that it goes against the sandbox nature of X4, since now the player is not free to explore the content as they wish and instead it becomes even further gated behind storyline missions. Given Kingdom End is already gated pretty far along a storyline, I think the current situation as a compromise is alright since it might break the illusion upon first entry, but does give the player some content to explore at their own rate rather than having it all gated behind storylines.

At some stage Windows 7 compatibility was broken. Version 6.00 HF 3 (r498552) was meant to have fixed this. I wonder if HF 4 or HF 5 have broken this again?

Although X4 should still support Windows 7, ultimately the writing is on the wall for Windows 7 support as platforms like steam will stop supporting Windows 7 at all within a year. Even if X4 keeps supporting it, the game launchers might not.

Some of these games do not work on Windows 10 so an OS upgrade is not viable? An option in this case might be to dual boot the laptop. Such as installing a bigger SSD (2 TB SATA SSDs are getting quite cheap) and having a Windows 10 install along with your Windows 7 install that you select between depending on what you want to play.

Instead of Windows 10, a more compact Linux install (no licence required, Linux distros are free) could also be used. This might run X4 even better than Windows does, but performance and compatibility is pretty much at the mercy of what drivers are available/compatible with your laptop.

The vector instruction extension being used predates Windows 7 so is fully supported by Windows 7. Some people with older AMD CPUs cannot play X4 at all anymore, irrespective of the OS they use, because those series of AMD CPU lack support for that specific vector instruction extension.

Even if a more modern vector instruction extension like AVX was required, Windows 7 should still support it.

Instructions cannot be faked. The CPU either supports them, or it does not. There are virtualisation approaches to emulate different/missing instruction sets by translating them into a sequence of supported instructions, but I would not recommend that for a CPU intensive game like X4. This approach is used on Windows 11 ARM and MacOS running on Apple silicon to support x86-64 applications which cannot run natively due to the completely different instruction set.

They haven't dropped support for Win7 at all; 6.00 HF3 addressed a specific Win7 issue as IG said above. Link.

There could be some hardware limitation involved but, just in case, I would start by verifying the game installation and making sure that you have the latest WHQL drivers for your devices and Win7.

Not really. They are very much older games, with different system requirements and using a completely different graphics API.

If you were to provide a DXDiag, as requested in the very first thread at the top of the forum, then we might have a chance of identifying why you can't run X4. If it's something simple, as opposed to not meeting the minimum requirements for example, then we might even be able to help you solve it.

Once again, you need to provide a DXDiag. Instructions on how to do this are in the "Please read this before posting!" sticky thread at the very top of the forum.

Yes, that's how you're supposed to do it. :)

So this is where the problem lies. Your laptop simply doesn't meet the minimum requirements for the game. It needs a proper graphics card, not just the on-board one that comes with your CPU. This on-board hardware doesn't have proper Vulkan support, which is absolutely essential as that's what the game uses, and it doesn't have enough memory either. As a side-note, your CPU is also slower than the one specified in the minimum requirements, so even if the graphics card weren't a problem it still wouldn't be much fun to play. Sadly neither of these are things you're going to be upgrade in a laptop, so I'm afraid you're not going to be able to play X4 on this computer.

.. you were just using X4 to stress test the work laptop as a working trial. You wanted to eliminate the possibility of any weaknesses in it that might affect your work productivity.
