Erlking turret question

Post by Stabby Dave » Mon, 26. Sep 22, 13:13

Can you put them on other ships, or is it just the aforementioned Erlking? Just wondering for the future.

Cheers.

Nope, all Erlking equipment can only be mounted to the Erlking in vanilla.

The reason the Erlking turrets are so powerful/good is meant to be because they are tapping into the Erlking's unique power source. As such they are unique to that ship which from a gameplay perspective is one of the reasons the Erlking is one of the best ships in X4.

Not all Erlking equipment is "best in slot". If you own Cradle of Humanity DLC the TER XL Mk2 Shield Generators are superior to the Erlking XL Shield generators. You still need to equip the Erlking with its unique shield generators for the HQ office trophy, but once that has been awarded you are free to swap them out for a superior Terran shield.

If you consider, that you can build ATF-superlaser-capable power-cores, that power 16 plasma turrets, engines and ship life support on top of that while also being able teleport living beings and the HQ precisely throughout galaxy, the argument of the "unique" power-core immediately becomes moot.

All the cool stuff from the DLC is locked to the few unique ships it adds. Please Egosoft, give the players to use the things universally. they already paid for.

Not all power cores necessarily have to produce the same kind of power or materials.

Most of the Asgard super structure is meant to be supporting the XL battery and 16 L turrets, to the point it has few regular M turrets so cannot really afford to use the L turrets for anti-capital only. For comparison the Erlking is literally a bunch of scraps tied together and yet each of its M turrets is more powerful than a normal anti-fighter L turret.

The HQ also uses a unique power source. Boso explains as much. It is unclear where PIO acquired it from but it is not something that can be easily recreated within the period of time covered by the game.

Likewise with the Erlking it is not that the power core is truly unique, but more that trying to build another one would take time beyond what is covered by the game, either because it would need to be reverse engineered due to its original creators being gone or because building such a thing just takes a very long time.

A real-life example of such uniqueness is the Antonov An-225 Mriya. It was unique not because people lack the ability to make more, but rather it made no sense to make more. It will likely be decades before such an aircraft may exist again, if it even happens during our lifetimes.
