i know they warn it's might not be compatible but is it absolute not, or is it likely not compatible

It isn't so much a compatibility issue (although the devs would never *totally guarantee* compatibility of a save from a beta into the next release version), it is more a case of the additional risk of something really bad and unforeseen happening during evolving beta gameplay changes that can not be fixed and fully recovered from so spoiling any future gameplay using that beta save onwards. Obviously that problem would ideally be resolved before the next release version so that it wouldn't ever happen to non-beta players. That is why the devs ask you to back up your non-beta gameplay somewhere safe before switching to the beta.
