Can we have a 'target ahead' key please
We had one in X3.
Some of us play with joystick in the left hand and mouse look in the other (advantage of being left handed), or indeed have head tracking. I still have to switch off mouse look to manually select a target that is not an enemy or closest to me, because are options are only and just that,
1. Select nearest enemy
2. Previous / next target
3. Select closest object
When we had a target ahead, i simply pointed the aiming reticule at something and hit the target ahead key meaning i could select whatever on the fly.
As mentioned we had it in X3, why the no-show hear?

I have a button on my joystick which essentially functions as target ahead.
In the "Settings" menu, under "Controls", Gamepad mode is set to "Only with controllers"
In the "General Controls" menu, I have "Target Object" assigned as a button on my joystick. When I press this button, generally the ship or object which is directly in front of me gets targeted.

Ok, i'll have to look into this, are you sure its not just selecting the 'closest object'?Falcrack wrote: ↑Fri, 3. Dec 21, 14:04I have a button on my joystick which essentially functions as target ahead.

"target object" is what I use on my keyboard, and it seems to pick the thing near the boresight.

Sure it is not just the closest object, it is the object ahead of me, as Lamefox said.Poacher886 wrote: ↑Fri, 3. Well i tried it and it selected the closest object, indeed the mouse over description says as much!
Re: Can we have a 'target ahead' key please
It says that but it doesn't behave that way for me. If I press that key while something 100km away is near the centre of the screen it will select that rather than a ship 5 km away that's closer to the side.

Re: Can we have a 'target ahead' key please
That odd, i just get endless close asteroids or ships??
Re: Can we have a 'target ahead' key please
The T key on my keyboard targets what is in my sights
Only time i have issues is if there are multiple targets. Like im 40km away from an I and his smaller escorts. Pressing T is a roll of the dice to what it actually picks... but it does target what is in front of me, not what is closest.
I don't think it will target anything too far away though. Like if you were 100km away from a station, could it target the station even if you can't mouse click it?

I aim to misbehave...

The T key does target ahead, as grapedog says, but it does not track out nearly as far as clicking the mouse on a target would, which to me is an unnecessary annoyance.
Not as annoying as not having a "deselect target" hotkey, though. For that you need the mouse, which means it's not possible to use a HOTAS exclusively in the cockpit. Literally the only thing that's missing is "deselect target."
