I tested 21.8.2 too.

I'll test with 1080p in a little while and post those
OK came around to update my Manjaro to latest 21 version including 5.14rc6 kernel, MESA 21.6.1-1, activated nggc at the environmental variables. (next MESA will be using by default ngcc)

Code: Select all

RADV_PERFTEST=nggc

Set the same undervolt/overclock settings at corectrl as on Windows (to make sure GPU/RAM run at same speed)

Code: Select all

5700XT = 80 fps when the spire & ships appear, 84-85 fps otherwise (Linux)
Compared to Windows 10 with 21.6/21.8.1/21.8.2 drivers.

Code: Select all

5700XT = 70 fps when the spire & ships appear, 80 fps otherwise (windows)

FYI on Linux using MSAA 2x instead of 4x doesn't alter the visuals, they still remain smooth lines contrary to Windows.

Code: Select all

5700XT = 112 fps when the spire & ships appear, 124 fps otherwise (Linux with MSAA 2x)

I was getting ~165 with just the station, but dropped to ~135 when the ships flew past. Crept up to 180 as the station was leaving but then dropped to 140 for no apparent reason just as the tail end of it was still there. Got up to 180 again with no station but ships took it down to 175.

system is an i7 10700KF, RX 6900XT (specifically "PowerColor Radeon RX 6900 XT Red Devil OC 16GB" so there is some factory overclocking), 32GB of RAM at 3000MHz CL15. OS is win 10 and GPU drivers are 21.6.1

Monitor is 1440p, technically 144Hz but I have it set to 120Hz as this model gets some weird flickering if your actual FPS exceeds that. It is using Freesync. I have another 1080p monitor doing not much beside holding this thread.

CPU seems content to run at 4.66 GHz. As per my other thread, it is not using hyperthreading, and saw only 20% utilization. In game is at least 3x that without HT.

GPU shows 95%-100% utilization and 1986-1988MHz clock speed.

I'm wondering if this is normal for my 3080..I'm getting 175 - 190 fps in the menu. I've seen that the 3080ti gets ~235 and there isn't much difference between the 3080 and ti.

Game specs as per first post. 1440P resolution

CPU: AMD 3700x
RAM: 8 x 4 gb 3600Mhz cl16 (G.Skill Neo)
GPU: EVGA 3080 XC3 Ultra

GPU is undervolted and runs at 1890 Mhz. Not undervolted it pulls 300 Watts for the same performance. Undervolted it pulls 240 watts (not all games show such a difference in power usage).
Otherwise i'm thinking of upgrading the cpu to a 5800x but i'm not sure if it's worth it. They are heavily on sale in my area right now.

Cheers! :)

I have no idea. The gap shouldn't be that high, you should have been around 230fps considering the difference between 3080 and 3080Ti is not even 5% at 2560x1440

3080ti (gigabyte aorus master) = 232 fps - 238 fps this score looks right in line with what I thought it should be
What are your 3080Ti settings? Have you overclocked your GPU & VRAM?

Bone Stock. Gigabyte Aorus Master. No tweaks to fan curve or anything. His clocks are at 1890 mhz with an undervolt. I'm seeing 1995 mhz quite often if the room is cool enough. Here's a screenshot. The clocks show 1905 mhz but it must have just dipped when I took the screen shot. Image https://imgur.com/a/5r3sOoc You can see the FPS is the upper left corner.

AAAAHhhh Linux :P

Yeah 30% less CPU overhead from the drivers then :D

Even on my GTX1060 6Gb laptop X4 runs 30% faster with Linux (Ubuntu due to the secure boot :( )
My PC is bit less the gap, but is still around 20% faster in CPU bound scenarios because of the better governor/scheduler and 10% faster in GPU bound scenarios (eg the start screen).

Cheers :D

Windows was identical for the 3080ti. But yeah... I'm very happy linux is gaining ground. Especially with the steam deck! Now maybe all game devs will really start taking linux serious.

*** Edit : Ooops I see what you mean after re-reading. Yes... Linux undoubtedly appears to be way smoother with regard to frame time excursions when cpu bound for me. Love Linux!

Hmm, I can see your point about the clocks. I set it to 1890Mhz, but MSI Afterburner bumps it to 1905Mhz, and in game I see it comfortably run 1935Mhz. Still on the undervolt. If I take it off, the performance is the same but the wattage and heat output increase.

Maybe someone with a 3080 can comment?

Just an aside: I can see your shadows are pretty blocky and set to high. There is a workaround where you set shadows from 2 to 1 in the config file (it enables normal shadows options which was greyed out for me) which for some reason look better than high (more smooth). I think Ego messed something up in the settings there.

Edit: Just upgraded to AMD 5800x. FPS in menu is now 240 - 250 fps. Seems like the 3700x was holding me back...damn.

Quick dirty overclock in a 77 deg F room on the 3080ti. Can't wait until I get some time to really push this card. Looks like a great piece of silicon.

Code: Select all

3080 ti w/ a moderate overclock in X4 test = 247 fps
Seriously looks like Nvidia is the way to go with x4. I didn't even try on the overclock. Got 203 rd place equivalent in Unigine Super @ 13277 pts
And this is with it installed in the x8 slot on a 6700k !!
** Edit to add ** A little more work got 13712 pts That's 125th place. I'll make top 100. That'll be fun publishing that with a 6700k.

Either my cpu is really holding my gpu back on the main menu of x4 test or something is wrong as i really think i should have scored alot more than about 90 with a 6700xt, sure its not a 3080 or a 6800xt but it still should be plenty powerful as its new and about just above midrange.

Btw panos, did u update the amd forum thread topic with updated score results?

I will update it in the morning.

spookywatcher proved that is not a CPU issue. There is no way the 1080Ti been 50% faster than the 5700XT or 40% than the 6700XT.
Clearly there is an issue with the game as I haven't seen any other vulkan game that behaviour also and searched extensively.

Also we have the same issue with the opensource Linux drivers, where in Linux the 3900X pulls ahead 20% over windows in CPU bound scenarios too.

Unfortunately we have no information up to now :(

FYI before someone points on another discussion talking about reshade & vkBasalt, all my tests are done with Reshade & vkBasalt OFF made sure by ripping apart the injectors completely from my system and painfully putting them back in again every time.

It's growing on me. I really wanted the 6900xt as the daily driver but now that summer is starting to fade (and the poor performance of the 6900xt) I can use the 3080ti without turning my home office into a sweat box. Beware during overclock testing it was pumping out 460 watts! And it's loud. Like REALLY REALLY loud, but the temps are really good. So if I trade a little temp for a quieter customer fan curve it's bearable. But alas like I said it's growing on me. So most likely I will be keeping it. Even though I LOVE the design and colors of the AMD 6900xt reference (it matches my build as well) It'll go on the trophy wall and the 3080ti is going to do the heavy lifting. The 1080ti went to my boy. And the 1050ti went to my little girl.

But NO DOUBT the amd gpu's are just gimped too badly in X4 and right now that's my main game to play. But she's in the trophy case just itching to come back in when it's gets sorted out.

I know my post won't be much help... But I'm on GOG stand alone install (not galaxy). So all testing was done without steam.

Ah gotcha.

Also i wondered, if it affects anyone if you disable fullscreen optimizations from right clicking the exe and go to compatibility and doing what i just said about fullscreen thing. Probs not but wondered. Or maybe running the game as administrator.
