Automatic Resupply Settings Question

Like probably everyone, I am having issues trying to use AUX ships because even with automatic resupply set to Low, my ships tend to run off to repair at the Aux ship if they even get their paint scratched. Does anyone know if setting automatic resupply to off remove this behavior?

Also what other ramifications might there be to settings to off? In fact what does high, medium and low really mean in terms of the game because I can't really see any difference in how often my ships run off to repair no matter what the setting?
