X4 should become greener

Post by CC|Schulterkrueppel » Thu, 13. Aug 20, 10:32

In X4 we produce so much trash ( destroyed ships and bases), i think it is time to clean up a little. How about a flying scrapyard, a very slow unique XL Ship with Tug ships to tow in the destoryed stuff and traders to sell spare parts. the scrapyard would produce smal amounts of end products and sometimes even upgrade items.
it might even add a little story line were the player start as a tug-pilot and become the boss of the scrapyard.

Wait a little bit and those trash will be space-dust on its way to the sun.

I like tug boats !
I want some kind of scavenging ship, to pick apart the rubbish out there.
Then to have a yard where the slaves get to work dismantling the shells.
Particularly the Xenon ships, so we can get parts from them.
May be the salvaged ship has trapped crew, who you can convert into slaves.
Or the ship still has some rare cargo, only available from salvaged ships.

The possibilities for this game are immense, yet it is still all about big guns.
Times need to change, we players are more intelligent than the gunslingers of old.

Speaking for yourself of course. I don't think it has to do with intelligence. Some people just want to see things go boom when they shoot them with their big guns. I'm not sure there is more to it than that.
If you want a different perspective, stand on your head.

Rather than tugging ships, I think it'd be easier to implement a "scavenger beam" weapon, similar to a mining beam, only that instead of splitting asteroids apart it is used for splitting up ship / station debris into smaller chunks which can be collected by cargo drones or mining drones. Basically an almost-copypaste of the mining ship mechanics.

Edward Elmer Smith the father of space opera mentioned such a beam in his book Triplanetary from the 1960s.
he called it a converter field

it could target ferrous metal found in ships to recover precious iron to fuel cold fusion reactors on an alien home world..the field destroyed entire fleets of enemy ships and drew the molten magma into the receiver ships storage hold.

we could have different converter field technologies to target different elements.

he also had a drill beam. which would bore a hole in an enemy ships shield, then drop a bomb though the hole, close the hole and explode the bomb.
result was that the ship would implode within its own shield.

but my favourite was from a game in the late 1980's ....the BSE emitter.
the Binary-Sick-Emitter would send a data stream to the target ship which would infect the ships systems, leaving it helpless for a certain amount of time until the crew could figure it out.
