Blast Rays work great for this. They don't seem to damage the lockbox but break locks very quickly. Also its a beam weapon so its a bit easier to aim.

You mean Burst Rays?

Burst ray MK1 = 173.3mw Hull damage
Ion Blaster MK2 = 24mw Hull damage

Ion Blaster is great for shield damage, but only scratches hulls, and its less hull damage thats important for lock boxes

A beam is probably more accurate, but boost the bullet time with in game mods on the Ion blaster makes them just as good near instant hits at such short range.

(That reminds me I made the mistake of installing MK1 Ion blaster on my Nimcha in the video linked earlier, must change that, MK2 does less Hull damage than MK1).

Yes Burst Ray. TBH I only stumbled on this playing last night. I have a Gladius set up with 2 Burst rays and 2 blast cannons (not sure of the name, I am at work) that is attached to my Marine force (Osprey and 5 Minotaur's) I use for liberating pirate ships. The burst ray is really nice for taking out engines and turrets. Follow up with the blast cannon to take shield down and get the hull <80% before sending in the boarding group. As it happens there was a lockbox right next to my recent capture. While the marines were doing their thing, I took care of the lockbox. My gun option were the cannon or ray. It actually did better than I expected it to.

You could use a mining laser. If you're having NPC pilots do the steering anyway, drop them in a little mining ship and send them off.

I prefer the Ion blaster for it being part of my standard equipment.
On a bad day I use the Asgards mainbeam, nukes the station behind the box, too.

use weapon slot 2 and make sure only one gun is enabled in that slot.
now make sure your target is not selected and keep your aim dot inside the object.
As soon it go outside the object the aiming dot moves somewhere unpredictable.
position your ship good for each lock so you can easily shoot it while having the aiming dot inside the object and on top of the lock.

This works perfect for me with any weapon except missile launchers
