I've recently got back to Rebirth I left long ago and I am enjoying this little pearl, but ehi it took a lot of time and dedication too. It has a better atmosphere and just sits better in the Freelancer, etc. tradition. It seems a versatile game now to build on. Dx9 starts to show its age, a Dx11 or Vulkan upgrade would be so great.

Also to make it playable I had to change a lot, starting from the universe design which was always too much cartonish but it is ok after installing some mods as Ency and adding my modifications to clean the "too much stuff" of the design: local nebulae on top of nebulae on top of black holes on top of huge stars shining everywhere, all with planets in a so close proximity to look weird at least. :?

What I love a lot is the physics of flight introduced with the 3.60 patch (someone even say they introduced the concept of my phyisics mod I did before the 3.6). You can easily change it to your taste, from arcadey to almost 100% faithfull. Also it allows to make different engines have a porpouse that is not speed but manouvrability, inertial compensation, etc. So it makes sense.

Also I like the (still reduced in scale) systems, even if there are too many planets close one another...working on it. The scale of play is better than X3, where you end playing on a map instead of ingame. I think Ego went in the right direction with Rebirth, at the end you probably keeps staying in an M6 in X3 and using capitals and traders undirectly. Stations are not that great but that part helps keeping the scale at human perspective, hiring people etc.

The cons for me are 1) the terrible map and the interface hud for trading etc. but am getting used to them. 2) Local highways are such a punch on the stomach, fortunally you can remove them.

The map definetly needs a remake. X4's one is good but to be honest I don't like the empire management, it becomes the most tedious part of my endgame in X3, usually where I stop playing. Adding a lot of systems to Rebirth and even doing a restyle like bigger systems with a lot of zones connected with superhighways is very immersive. The art direction of having lots of eyecandy boxes (sectors) that comes from X3 is not to my taste, totally unimmersive. I prefer having a few backgrounds but increased particular zones as in Devrie or close orbits, all connected within a system. That's the reason why X4 looks so generic despite the nice cosmetic upgrade

What kind of a remake do you mean exactly?

Rebirth with multiple flyable ships and 5-10 more star systems with same standard of quality as the currents ones would blow X4 out of the water.

I would miss the many mechanics X4 has, like actual docking and a far more realistic economy (this part is very well done with New Frontiers at least). If they could backport at least some of that, it would be amazing, but I wonder how much is realistic. Bernd did say recently they want to backport some improvements to XRVR, but that's easier since it's also Vulkan. I wonder if they could show some love to regular XR!

I totally agree and that would be awesome. At least the Terran DLC includes those nice looking farm assets in one of the station modules! I need ReShade to make it look as good as in XR, though.

I wish it wasn't just VR but he specifically mentioned Vulkan, etc. I recall he said it during this interview and I think during the livestream on COH release day:

Then you know what to do.

I think we'll get there sooner rather than later. :)

Maybe, but I don't think anything will be as good as X4 ship control unless Ego does it.

It doesn't have to be as good as in X4.
You have already shown that you have the knowledge to create a mod that will incorporate the function more than enough.
It just needs a few more improvements, better transitions, cockpits etc.
I think you can do it :D

XR has a ton of functionality and features that X4 is worse off for lacking, and vice versa.

I cannot say for sure if I would rather play XR with some X4 features imported (like more customizable stations, being able to fly other ships for example), or if I would rather play X4 with some XR features (remote interaction with station personnel including remote trading, ui/menu access without having to open the map, formidable turrets, some of the more visually striking station modules, lockboxes with valuable contents)

I think the best part of Rebirth hasn't fully been tapped fully and could benefit from a new game.
You are in 1 ship.

Having a full ship interior with visual cubbies with spare parts that you need to grab and take to parts of the ship to repair when they get damaged in battle. Different damaged parts and different areas of the ship. Think Chewbacca repairing transistors in the heat of battle. Run out of a certain part? Buy some more at a station or get hosed. Part can't be prepared while you're flying? An aspect of your ship doesn't work like it should.

Random encounters with space insects that want to eat your ship and you need to do a space walk with your laser to fight then off. Think Lost in Space bugs.

Parts break down over time and need to be replaced. Think Star Trek's routine maintenance at Starport Yadda-Yadda. LoL

Having a fuel tank of sorts that needs refilled and can be damaged and leak. Journeys into distant uninhabited sectors are more risky and thus more rewarding.

On a different note, I've always thought a sort of cloud based economy and galaxy that is affected by community activity could be cool. Are most players buying a certain commodity? Buying price is high for the week. Selling a bunch of something? Sale price is low. Are a bunch of players attacking a certain race or faction? That race or faction's numbers are lower or even wiped out. " Take THAT GoD engine!" It could even spur an event of that race's aggressive last stand. There could be other random events that affect aspects of the game for the week. It's still single player but everyone contributes to how the galaxy is molded and so more people will want to keep playing and ultimately feel like a living galaxy because real people are affecting it.

"Does he fit the description?"
"I don't know...big, bad, stupid-looking."
"An exact match."

One thing I miss about Rebirth is the Characters are more relatable, even Yisha.
The storyline was great, the sectors had their own history/videos that gave each Faction a personality and of course, the characters.
The Adventures of Ren Otani need to continue.
Ragna-Tech.. Forging a Better Tomorrow!

My most annoying Bugs list 4.10 Release Beta 1 Hotfix 2 + [All DLC]
--------------------------------
Xenon Abandon Defense Stations Looking promising!
SETA around Spear of Odin = Crazy Jiggling Trap
Fires of Defeat Game Start Pilot stuck in ship Still happens.
Story Mission HQ Spawn Bug Still there.
Poor optimization of current build leads to a ton of problems Somewhat improved.

Seeing that X³: Farnham's Legacy happened.

One may secretly wish that somewhere, someone is/are hard at work creating the next chapter for X Rebirth 8)
