Ion Disruptors?

This may sound silly, but I've been playing around with IDs for some time now, and really can't see the point in them!

OK, so they're good on taking down sheilds, but do they really disable or destroy onboard equipment? I've pounded ships with up to 4 of them at a time, and the scanner I have reports the same cargo/equipment regardless of how long I've been beating on them with IDs.

Am I missing something?

Yeah, you use them for capping. Bring their shields down quick and then tickle them with an IRE until they freak out and bail.

Want a good capping mix, twin ions, twin mass drivers. Shield strippers and hull holers all at once. Ive has a couple of cool caps twith that combo.

Not used them in X3 but in X2 they would "damage" the ships components in the sense that when you capped it there were often less items in tact still aboard even though right up till the point of capture scanners showed everyting in one piece :)
not sure if thats how it works in x3 =p

ive not really seen that, ive capped craft with ions, ahepts, bhepts bpacs, mass drivers and ive always found capturing and whats left of your booty is down to luck and how hard you hit them.

ive blatted away at a ship not realising its gone from red to blue and now mine and i was a trigger finger away from losing it!

Yes your missing something. :P

You don't need more than 2 Ions in my opinion, and you use them to open your attack. When the shields are low you should switch weapons and stop using the Ion Distruptors.

I like to combine them with the Alpha High Energy Plasma Throwers, which do a fair amount of damage at the cost of draining your energy reserves quickly.

With respect to capping, I've not noticed it increase your chances but you do tend to cap ships with less hull damage as a result.

There also seems to be a chain lightning effect with the Ion Distruptor targeting multiple ships at once, not just the one in your crosshairs.

I use them to cap frequently.

I find it helps if I strip the shields, then fire off a couple of AHEPT shots, then go back to Ion Ds.

They often surrender immediately, failing that, a prolonged attack with the Ion Ds usually makes them bail.

The Ion Ds do indeed damege the equipped equipment.

ive seen that too. hit one and any ships in the close proximity of your victim gets hit too but the effect is reduced on those secondary targets.

Does more than one ion distruptor do more damage quickly????

When I have wingman is it best not to use this weapon as they can get hit?
