The "Name your worst release" topic

Post by Da_Imp »

Due to the recent proclaimation of X3 being the worst release ever, I'd decided to remind people about all the other bad releases out there, which never got as much support as X3 has in all their existence, just to ease people's mind and show them it's happening all over the place.

If this is a bad thing or not is beyond the scope of this topic, as we all agree the current trend is worrying (though understandable).

Here's a short list of my all time favorite broken releases:

Master of Orion 3
Black and White (All of em)
Fable (Lack of content, big time, and let down on expectations)
Elite sequels (Which were far worse afaik, at least frontier was)
Battlefield 2
Dawn Of War (It was playable but you'd box yourself in really quickly due to the unit meshes)
Rome: Total War
Starwars Battlefront
Starwars Force Commander (relatively unplayable out of the box)

Think I missed one? Feel free to add it to the list! Think I misjudged a game? Discuss!

Bare in mind Im talking about release versions, not patched ones ;)

Addementum: And don't come claiming it's X3, there's enough topics out there discussing that release. ;)

The only one on that list that I played was Master of Orion 3. Oh man, that thing was a waste of code if I ever saw it.

I went back to playing MOO2.

I wonder if I can buy one of those rigs. I mean, it passes through buildings, climbs mountains with ease, and can do donuts in reverse at incredible speeds!

Daikatana was the worst game I've ever played.

Rome total war barbarian invasion is one of the best and I can play that game with huge unit settings without any problems whatsoever.

I love that game :)

Mmm after watching Big Rigs: Over the Road I can say hand on heart that there is a new contender for worst game ever made :o

I would have to agree that Frontier: First Encounters was unquestionably the buggiest release I've ever played. What's more, it dates from the pre-Internet era, so the only way I could get fixes for SOME of the problems was to get GameTek to send me a patch floppy--and even then I was forced to give up the game when it abandoned me 200 light years from home in a ship with no shields (the Thargoids having confiscated them when I boarded their station, but NEVER RETURNED THEM when I left). That was also when I encountered the ludicrous thing that, even 200 light years from the nearest station, there were still pirates waiting to intercept you as you time accelerated toward the sun to scoop some fuel...

Star Trek Birth Of The Federation

650 + turns and CTD.

That's how too really make someone hate you, let them play 20 hours into the game before it dies

How could I have forgotten that one ;)
I never bought it because I thought it was overhyped and eagerly awaited the reviews.

To add something "new": Star Trek: Birth of the Federation was incredibly buggy as well as I recall. Though I still had fun playing it in the end. Being a MoO junky has its drawbacks I suppose.

Oops didn't read LV's post :)

Ow well here we go again:

Star Trek: Bridge Commander - Never played it but heard it was horrible ;)

Don't recall many problems with BotF... except regular crashes when going into combat mode. That's where saving every turn becomes you friend. Wouldn't call it the worst release ever though.

Prince of Persia: Warrior Within might qualify. Buggy, no support. I myself didn't have much problems with bugs, except one that got me stuck right before the end and requires me to do everything all over again, hoping I don't do whatever it is causing me getting stuck at the end.

One Must Fall: Battlegrounds. You never heard of it probably, which is exactly the problem. An online game lacking servers due to complete ignorance. There was support, but without a decent backing up, there's not much to expect. Pity, very good concept it is.

I've never been unfortunate enough to get a really bugged game.
Incidently, that video is brilliant.

Actually, I heard of that one. It got slacked in PC Gamer UK big time which would explain why so little people picked it up. As I recall, it was slacked because it was riddled with bugs as well.

That, and its predecessor got slacked as well. Tried to play it myself but it felt wooden compared to the Streetfighter and Mortal Combat games. Its graphics were ace imho though.

actually, bridge commander wasnt buggy at all, never had a single CTD when playing it for six months! :)
"There must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the universe can be said to be zero, From this it follows that the population of the universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the product of a deranged imagination" - Douglas Adams

Could be I'm confused with another Trekkie game. What more Star Trek games are there? Think it had something to do with building your own starship...

Starship Creator, that might be the one you are thinking of.

It wasn't so much buggy, as it was boring and uninteresting. It was cool for a little bit, design your ship (which you could easily cheat with, although it was somewhat intended- import your saved ship and sell it over and over) and the building proccess was was pretty detailed with facts. Basically depending on the class of ship you just puzzle pieced all the parts of the ship together, with different variations. There wasn't a ton to do. You picked your crew next and that was it. You had a nice 3D model to look at afterwards that would rotate around and look cool.

Then you would do a mission with it. And that's where it sucked. Basically your ship was a dot on the screen, and it'd lead you through a text adventure, no user imput required. Based on what you gave your ship it would either die or succeed in the mission. And the mission was usually hard to follow and uninteresting, not to mention predetermined. You'd then press enter or something to skip through it, and it'd tell you if you won or not.

It's been a while since I played it, but I'm pretty sure I got it for like $5 so I can't complain to much.
