New Universal Combat A World Apart demo!!

Post by tekm8 » Mon, 31. Oct 05, 19:22

Hi there! long time lurker, never posted. Anyway, I just downloaded a new demo for Smart's latest game and its not half bad TBH. Its not available in stores though. So if you like it you have to buy it from places like Direct2Drive. Smart has a list of download sites (including one that sells the CD-ROM version) on his website sales page. So far only 3DGamers seems to have the latest demo demo which comes in at 245MB.

Still waiting for X3 to be released in the US :(

And so begins the "Derek Smart is the Anti-Christ" flood.

I haven't played the game, but looks nice.

Well as I've not yet got my copy of X3 I might download it later on but if its anything like as complicated as his other titles I doubt i'll do much with it. Still nothing ventured, nothing gained.... ;)

hehe, ok Derek Smart is a bit,, erm,, abrasive :-)
but I do actually respect his enthusiasm and conviction.

I think he will eventually get it right, the concept I like behind his BC - UC games, just they havn't done it for me 'yet'

The latest demo is only 254MB. It uninstalls just as quickly as it installs. If anything, give it 30 mins of your time and you'll be surprised.

Though I only got into Smart's games with BCM Gold (I skipped UC because of X2), this one seems really well done. The graphics are not on par with X2 but given the scope of the game I can understand why. The game is so huge and you can do so much stuff thats its mind numbing.

Each of the demo scenarios has a tutorial and he even included the full PDF manual from the full game.

I tried the demo and am enjoying it though I had to move it to my more powerful machine which I am currently building for X3. I'm going to play it some more but I'm definitely going to pick it up after I get my X3 fix.

To the rest of you, didn't the Smart bashing go out with bellbottoms and Afros? Or was that just the Beatles I'm thinking of?

I am still waiting for my copy of X3. The suspense is killing me.

Anyway, I went ahead and ordered UCAWA. This latest demo definitely convinced me. But I ordered the CD-ROM version from BMT because I'm not a fan of all those stupid download sites which inject all kinds of crap on your system just to download and play a game. Plus I suck at keeping copies of stuff I buy online.

Yes, they are so strict that I couldn't even create an account on them because apparently my email address wasn't good enough for them. I never did quite understand what that was all about, but luckily I never needed any Tech Support so it didn't matter too much.

I played BCMG for a few weeks while I was waiting for X² to come out. It wasn't too bad and would probably have been better if I'd played it as intended rather than in free roaming mode.

The poor points were the excessive micro-management (open landing bay doors, close landing bay doors, open landing bay doors...), the lack of any kind of economy (forgivable since it doesn't claim to be a trading game) and the lack of any collision detection between shps (not so forgivable for a game in which combat plays an important part).

I didn't encounter any of the quality problems that are often mentoned in the same breath as these games (one CTD bug which had a workaround and which was patched shortly afterwards) but then again I wasn't totally enthralled by the game either.

No collision detect between ships? You were probably playing a different game because what you say is very untrue. If there was no collision between ships, what kind of game do you think it would be? He has since released BCM on the net for free btw.

Yes, smart has a very colored history but as a public figure I think he has learned to take the good with the bad and ugly. I hadn't seen that Wiki before but it reads like some of his haters are still spreading their propaganda because most of the entries are untrue. For example, the ability to control naval units was never promised for UCAWA. Even if it was, games ship with removed features all the time so I don't see what the big deal is and why it is even in a Wiki as a point. Just because he doesn't take crap from anyone and dish out as much as he gives some people hate him. Probably out of envy.

As to his forums. Take one look at this Egosoft forum, compare to his forums. You can clearly see that his gamers are a completely different type. He doesn't encourage crap on his boards. But hey, he pays for it, so he can do what he likes, right?

More on smart

I was playing BCMG and I can assure you that there was no collision detection between ships. I could fly my main ship straight into the middle of my opponent, which was great in the sense that it made it difficult to miss but didn't do the realism much good.

Just for the record I linked the Wiki for amusement value and to answer the previous poster's question, not because I have an issue with Mr Smart or his games. I take everything I read on the internet with a pinch of salt and I hope everyone else does to. ;)
