X-Tern: external Scripteditor [PrePrePreview]

Post by mq »

Simply that you know that someone is doing it: ;)
X-Tern: External X2 Scripteditor

First of all:
This is a PrePrePreview-Version. Its only purpose is to show you that there are persons who finally are crazy enough to write it.

Why an external Editor?
The build-in X2 Scripteditor, pretending to be a boardcomputer, is a very powerfull tool that allows you to change the behavior of the whole Universe. The idea to pretend being a boardcomputer might be at first sight both nice and easy to use. But the time your projects became bigger and bigger you will quickly notice that most of developingtime gets lost because of scrolling through endless lists of commands, wares, variables etc and limited copy & paste functions. This can be really discouraging. These disadvantages X-Tern doesn´t have!

Who the f*ck take these great pains and write X-Tern?
X-Tern is a joint project by laprican and me (mq). Laprican is writing the scriptinterface and I am writing the Editor itself.

When can you use it?
When it´s done ;)

How do I install this previewversion?
Simply copy all files into any directory and start XTern.exe.

What can this previewversion do?
As I said, this is a very early version that merely should give you the feeling that someone is working on it and that there is a good chance that it will be finished one day. This version can NOT be used for serious use, the more so as it can only open Files. It supports two languages (english and german) that can be selected from the optionsmenu in the editor. All editor- and windowsettings will be saved, you don´t have to set them over and over again.

Read Scripts? That I can do with my Internet Explorer!
The part of the script which the Internet Explorer is reading, is completely irrelevant for the build-in editor. Anyone who already dipped into the XML-Scripts knows that the real script is stored in a so called codearray. Thats the one X-Tern is using, too.

What features we dream about for future versions?
- Save Scripts ;)
- Syntax highlighting (Different Textstyles and -colors for commands, parameters etc)
- Command-Completion (automatic commandcompletion, maybe you know it from commercial development tools
- and a lot more ;)
