maybe, but u will need a BIG CHUNKY server board for the internet and one computer prob could not cope the X2 engine for orther people as well as themselfs...
As for the GTA3 multiplayer it was only working in cars driving around from what I heard (not an official add on from Rockstar but a home-mad mod), apparently outside of the cars the players couldn't see each other.
There are rumours that GTA4 will be online multiplayer based...
Still would be nice if like in System Shock 2 they patched multiplayer later. However I imagine it would be quite a big design task unless some of the X-Online code is embedded in X2.
X Universe is HUGE, if a multiplayer version was to be made the computer has to remember every ship in the X universe, and it cant be turned on and off, that would be a waist
but if it was a dedicated server running 24/7 it would be fine, but to hold all the info you will need alot of cpu and RAM, which is expensive and not really worth it unless you are a billionare and have nothing better to do with the money...

X2 online will probaly be nice, but some good old LAN (Internet with up to... 8 players) coop in X2 would be the bomb.
When they start on the netcode in x2:Online, I most certinaly hope a patch would be made that allows you to play on a LAN.
A few things.
A dedicated server wouldnt have to render anything, only the clients would.
If a player's computer was acting as server, it would only have to render the sector the player is in, like in a single player game. Whoever was connected to the server would only have to render he sector they were in. The difference from a regular game would be that only the player acting as server would be collecting information on and caluculating the economy and keeping track of ships (as it would anyway), only now it would be distributing the numbers to the clients rather than keeping them to itself.
true that in single only the sector your in has to be rendered but cpu still needs to be dedicated for slow wingmen and other ships flying through the sectors and thats what will eat the cpu and ram up...

but if that can be avoided then no problems...
Yes, but it would have to do this anyway, and only for yours - so if your PC was capable of running X2 comfortably, it would be capable of acting as a server for a modded LAN game as described. :)
How about instead of using X2 and X3 engines we use the engines that were used to make X-BtF and X-T? The universe is smaller, the engines are lighter and ships look cooler!
