Tried to do some searching and didn't really find anything on this, specifically.
Finally filled a Cobra with 20 marines well-trained in Engineering and decently trained in everything else and took a sitting duck last night from a Return Ship mission. Looking forward to more of that. But I've seen some videos where, once all the marines had cut through the hull (or as soon as they made contact?), the player jumped to a different sector for the remainder of the op. Is this just to avoid any additional combat with the target ship, or does the boarding behave differently when OOS?
[X3TC] IS vs OOS boarding. Does it make a difference?

boarding
I use the Unfocused Jump to the great Unknown, mostly to avoid the return fire of the target. But there's a nice thing that happens. Most of the time the escort turns blue during the coarse of the boarding. If you make the jump after the marines are launched but before contact with the hull, they never turn red. In either case, you come back after a successful boarding and there's no one shooting at you.

So yes, it's basically an exploit.
