EGOSOFT – THE STUDIO, X4 AND THE X REBIRTH VR EDITION

Egosoft was founded in the distant past. Nevertheless, there are many plans for the future. At the moment the German Studio is working on a new VR Edition of X Rebirth with a new Engine as well as on the sequel X4. An Interview from Nerdcube with Bernd Lehahn, Managing Director of Egosoft.

(Editors Note: The questions were asked before the announcement of the new game.)

Egosoft was founded in 1988. What were the most important milestones in 28 years?
Basically, you can distinguish two phases in the history of EGOSOFT: The time before and after X. Before the release of X: Beyond the Frontier in 1999 we were a much smaller team (first only two, from 1995 onwards four people) and we always tried to finance our big games with smaller promotional games for clients in the German advertising industry. The "big" titles were usually for the Amiga and at the beginning these were adventure games.
With the release of X: Beyond the Frontier we immediatelly began an intensive dialogue with our fans from all over the world, which lead to the creation of our forum and the so-called Devnet. This defined our company and all of our following games

What advice would you give young developers, so that their companies survive for a similar amount of time?
It's hard to deduce advice from our history for the present, as the industry has changed heavily. What were our promotional games back then, are smaller apps for the mobile market today. But that is pretty much the only similarity. Due to the many available engines and tools, it may be easier to develop projects. However, the competition, especially in the appstore, is fierce. Getting attention for the own project is very difficult for newcommers.
A general piece of advice, related to our early phase, could be that you have to think early about what you are willing to sacrifice. While a professional planning of a startup company is very helpful, you should ask yourself, what costs should be taken as a basis for your calculations. For the survival of our company in the early years it was crucial that both founders were willing to live with an income way below-average for many years.

Is the size of the core team still 20 people? How many freelancers does a new X-game need and in which area are they needed?
The amount of 20 people was first reached with the development of X3 (around 2005). Since then the team size hardly changed.

What technical challenges or upcoming trends do you face when developing a space simulation game in 2017?
Next to many existing challenges Virtual Reality is a new topic. We just announced a version of X Rebirth for VR systems.

Despite the new project just recently you released small new patches for X3: Terran Conflict (2008) and X3: Albion Prelude (2011). What is the motivation behind these releases? Are the X-series games long sellers?
Definitely.
Also it shouldn't be that surprising anymore, as it’s quite common for us to release smaller updates to keep the games up to date.

In 2013 X Rebirth wasn't released as a Steam Early Access title. Would this option be a blessing or a curse for the next title?
That remains to be seen. We are planning to release the VR title "X Rebirth VR Edition" as an Early Access title. This allows us to thoroughly test the newly developed graphics engine based on Vulkan and to receive a lot of feedback about the VR experience.

The "Complete Edition", which was released this year (2016), sounds rather final. Does this conclude the X Rebirth chapter?
As mentioned above, we support our games for a long time. Just as we released updates for our more than 10 years old games, we will release further updates for X Rebirth. In particular we are working on a VR Edition based on X Rebirth. Apart from that, X4 is a big topic for us in 2017.

You can find more information about the X Rebirth VR Edition on www.egosoft.com.

Thanks a lot X2-Illuminatus, for the translation.

Although it doesn't really say very much.
