I just had a thought (yes, it happens... painless, usually) which I intend to test later, when I get a chance to, but perhaps someone has already tried this:

Would not equipping HIT/MAs on a Balor (or removing them) get it to stay at Novadrone range? (The logic being that there would be no close-combat weapons to get into range of... assuming that logic applies!)

You mean other than its pathetically weak shields and hull, for example? Most freighters have stronger hulls and shields than the poor Balor. Razz

Curious, did you try and see if it works? I don't have a balor in my game right now so I can't verify it myself. I would be more than happy to assign 2 dozens fighters to escort a balor if I can have it staying in the back in exchange.

I haven't yet, as I also don't have any Balors in my current game (I would use them in DeVries, but they are only available there through missions, which I'm avoiding [looks like I'll have to make an exception soon, though], while in Albion I can buy them but not use them, at present...) However, as soon as I get around to it, I will certainly update here Smile

I like your idea about fighter escorts - in fact, if the original notion pans out, I will then make a "LRM" squadron of several Balors, with fighters attached (other combat capital ships can't keep up with Balors, not even Light Suls, so I would avoid them - would prefer to keep the Balor squad as mobile as possible.)

Problem with Balor is limitations with AI in general. For example if they made Balor AI better it would be i win ship. So they would need to improve other ships AI's in order to work (like ships would target incoming missiles).

This is how i would love to see in Balor:

1) No weapons only missiles. It would have two types of missiles anti fighter and anti capitals.

2) No drones

3) AI keep distance and it have powerful front thrusters so it can move backwards (all ships should be able to do this but in much slower rate).

4) It can be equipped with missiles that can target other missiles for personal or fleet defense.

This way it wouldnt be overpowered like M7M from X3TC/AP but it would still pack hell of the punch. But it all about AI in the end and how much Ego wants to improve it.....

well, in this case everything should have missile deffence or balor would become an invincible doommachine... it rates of fire would have to be severely limited just as its capacity.

Yep all ships should have missile defense missiles/turrets . Litcube mod has caff missiles (swarm missiles I think) that are automatically targeting any incoming missiles. It was one of best systems I have seen so far in any space game... Even M.A.R.S mod was effective against missiles as well..... This way we can increase rate of fire for Balor and enjoy the fireworks and light show....

Balor should try to stick in novadron range by itself without dirty tweaks like removing its turrets.

There is a mod that does it.

I agree completely. Nonetheless, since I only play vanilla, I am about to try to see whether that "dirty trick" (heheh) works - I hope it does, because then at least I can use some Balors as they are (or ought to be) intended to be used - having them always rush into CQC makes them pointless to me, whereas if they worked as they should, they could be really nice to have, if used correctly.
