X3TC: CTD "Exiting because of unrecoverable error."

Post by Chillkroete- » Wed, 12. Nov 14, 14:57

While playing X3TC DiD i get a CTD with:

"Exiting because of unrecoverable error. Error reading contents of file."
X3TC pops this error message (not windows), but (unfortunately) does not provide any additional information.

Graphics drivers are up to date.

I had this problem previously and it occurs rarely (3 ingame days) but consistently.

Data:
- Steam X3TC (german); I verify game cache before EVERY game start. (Current content BuildID: 122922)
- verified game cache after CTD ... still checks out.
- vanilla
- Suicidal Squid Game start (~3 ingame days, goner plot finished, terran, treasure hunt & hub started)
- CTD with above Error message while just flying around.
- WMP package is installed (bec of Win7-N)

Please post the relevant error messages from Event Viewer. Guide here.

Maybe try playing with your USB sound unplugged while using subtitles just as a trial to eliminate that default MicroSoft USB Audio driver as being the problem.

The DxDiag looks OK.

As this was not an AppCrash from Windows, but X3TC throwing an unrecoverable error and giving me a window with an ok button to close, there is nothing in the Event Viewer, since for Windows the application closed regularly.

Played the game without USB sound back in the day with the same problem - so this should not be the cause of the problem.

Well since this issue is pretty unique to your system and installation, you may have to consider using an application/system monitoring tool that runs in the background so that the exact file that cannot be read from disk may be identified and perhaps checked or replaced.

An alternative, and probably less trouble, would be to do a clean uninstall of the game (see end of this) and reinstall it from scratch (keeping your saves and profiles, etc).

Finally you could instead check the contents of the harddrive that has the gamefiles using the MSDOS command 'chkdsk' and even perhaps repair it using the much longer 'chkdsk /f' process.

I already tried a clean install of both Windows AND the game ... problem persists ... harddrive is also not the problem since I have the problem in both cases ... when i have the game on the SSD or the HDD.

Also checked my main memory with memtest86+ - no problems there.

I'd really like to know which file crashes the system - how can monitor that?

Decompiling and rewriting the Exception Catcher of X3TC is far beyond my skills. Is there an X3TC crashdump somewhere or something?

I mean if the game recognizes/acknowledges it can not read a specific file ... shouldn't it be really easy to spit out which file that is?

In my long experience repairing computers, I have to say this is not a definitive test. It does sound like a memory error of some sort, and the best way to test it is to swap memory in and out and see if you can isolate the problem chip.
Have a great idea for the current or a future game? You can post it in the [L3+] Ideas forum.

Is there a better, definite software-sided test for memory?
Or a way to first definitely narrow the cause of my crash down to a memory problem? (I never had any kind of memory problem in the past or with any other program/application)

Swapping out memory chips of my laptop and then playing days and days of x3tc ... is kind of impractical ... and definitely a lengthy task, considering the error comes on average once every few play-time days ... but then it ****** kills your DiD.

I take it you did also run the onboard Win7 RAM check? This is no more thorough than MemTest though.

1.Click Start or press the Windows key
2.Type "mdsched.exe" (without the quotes)
3.Chose one of the available options.

If you choose the second option, the scan will start the next time you boot the computer. If you choose the first option, the computer will reboot and start the scan immediately.

During the scan, you will see options to change the type of scan and how many times to scan. You should leave it alone unless you really suspect something wrong with your RAM and the normal scan does not find it.

Once the scan finishes, Windows will start, and within moments a bubble notification will appear, stating that the scan is finished. Click on this bubble to view the scan report.

Try disabling your virus scanner completely or at least for your steam and game directory. Wondering if the virus scanner is getting the way???

... Hmm, I'm not sure I would endorse disabling your AV while still online.

I would say perhaps disable any *real-time file-checking* in your AV or protection softwares as a test only - just the file checks that might happen every time you load something from harddrive into RAM - but leave your general and online/download protection running.

I'm running Sophos and that normally notifies you, when it blocks something. It definitely didn't quaranteen anything during that timeframe and nothing Steam/X3TC related is quaranteened. So this should not be inhibiting anything.

It has an "On-Access" Scan that is enabled and I can experiment with switching that off ... but since that just checks files as they are loaded, this should not be inhibiting anything since the quaranteen section is empty. @Ego: Is the loading process of my file time-sensitive? What are the retries/timeouts?

As for the Win7 RAM test, I will let that run later on during the night.

OK. What about when playing without real-time file checking?

The only other thing I could suggest is to move your game-folder to another drive and see if that helps - but that will not help if it is a driver or OS file that is not loading.

Ok - summarizing this topic:
X3TC pops a windows:
"Exiting because of unrecoverable error. Error reading contents of file."
only once every few ingame days (relevant to DiD) but reoccuring and independent of task at hand (e.g. just hanging out in space)

- "DxDiag looks OK"
- No Event Viewer messages (Since X3TC "closes" with an error message and not just crashes)
- Memtest86+ & Win7 Mem Test check out
- Problem is invariant of Hard drive (tried my SSD and HDD - same result)
- Steam Game Cache checks out and is/was verified before every game start.

Things to try on my end:
- Disabling Sophos "On-Access" Scans
(- Swapping out of RAM chips - unlikely to have any impact and quite some hassle)

Remaining open Questions to Egosoft:
- Is the loading process of my file time-sensitive? What are the retries/timeouts?
- How can one access debug information to that crash ... to narrow down which file (on harddrive or ram) was causing this problem?

Recently I got some motivation to boot up X3TC again. And played some more DiD ... again the crash (this time with screenshot: http://imgur.com/V3fjL72 )

- Sophos "On-Access" Scans were disabled.
- Integrity of Game Cache was checked before and after every Play Session.

I futhermore tested some idling in space with 10x Sinza active. After 30+ ingame days no problems. But everytime I am actually playing I get this error thrown at me. This time at around 0d 23h game time.

Please give me a hint on how to locate and/or fix this problem. For me this is a gamebreaking issue, since the game can not be played on DiD whatsoever.

The problem is that we have absolutely nothing to go on. That screenshot without any error message history does not tell us what file failed to read. It could be a gamefile, a device driver, a system dll or anything else called.

All I can recommend is a further search of EventViewer for any further clues at the dates/times of the issues. As the screenshot demonstrates, this is a *not* a normal exit to desktop and so there should be some history stored somewhere.

The built-in Windows 'Problem steps Recorder' may not be much help to you because you don't know when the issue may occur. As said earlier, you could consider using a 3rd party system monitoring tool that at least will record what files were in use and their status at the time of a failure. Using this may affect the quality of your gameplay though.

1. Exactly my problem.

2. Event viewer has no Event logged for the time of the issue, since for windows this is an application normally closing. (X3TC throws this error and terminates). I checked this the last 2x this happened.

3. Which monitoring tools would you recommend?

and back to 1: The game catches some I/O Exception and throws an error back to the user without any debug info. I did everything so far to locate the problem, but without any info ... im stranded. Shouldn't it be reasonably easy to let the exception handler of this error message dump a file, which specifies the file which "contents could not be read"?
I have no idea how this handler is coded, but I am confident adding a method to dump some debug info should be possible. Could someone at Egosoft look into that please?

CBJ of Egosoft confirms that is an X3TC-generated error and is looking at the implications for you when he can.

I cannot vouch for a monitoring tool myself although I have heard a lot here about Process Monitor being used.

This thread has just been brought to my attention.

The error message you are seeing happens if certain game files contain corrupt data. The files concerned are normally those in the "types" folder, or .pdb, .pdb, .bob or .bod files in the "objects" folder of the game, in other words files that are among the most commonly changed by mods. Unfortunately in the release version of the game, the exact file that causes the problem is not recorded. There are no tries or timeouts as the game is single-threaded and just has to wait for the file to be read.

I can only imagine that there is something left over from a mod installed, or that you are getting some kind of data corruption. You may find the Process Monitor tool from Microsoft's Windows Sysinternals site useful in tracking down the affected file, though bear in mind that in the standard game, most files are read from the .cat/.dat catalogs rather than raw data files.

Thank you for the fast reply!
Since I only ever played vanilla and never installed any mods, this would mean I have some kind of data corruption going on. This is peculiar, since directly after the crash, I verified Integrity of the Game Cache via Steam and everything checked out.

I will look into the Process Monitor and will report back, whether I can get some information that way. Is there a different version of the game that I could run, which does record the exact file causing the problem?
