Poor performance

Poor performance
I would like to know why I get poor performance out of this game. My system is more than capable of handling this kind of game.
I can play the game and for the most part it runs steadily over 30 fps but I do have stuttering when giving orders to the ships or when entering or leaving highways and in many, many more situations.
The biggest problem for me is the low frame rate. I get excessive eye strain playing this game.
I cannot understand why this game runs so bad! I have more than enough hardware power to run this game and the AI is not really a reason for the poor performance.
Even navigating the menus is slow and painful in this game.
I have monitored my hardware usage on my second display while playing and this game barely uses a third of available processing power. My GPU actually drops clocks because it has nothing to do most of the time.
What is it that causes this horrible performance? It sure as hell isn't the AI or the simulation of economy since most of that isn't even working right.
This must be a problem with the game engine.
Is there any kind of hardware configuration that can run this game properly?
and by that I mean getting at least 60fps and have the AI actually working.
I could write a book about all the performance problems and weird behavior in this game.
Don't get me wrong I like the idea of this game and can see what it could become but I want to know what is the problem and why it hasn't been resolved.

I too have a very capable machine and very poor performance. So I suspect that's just the way it is.
This game seems to be very CPU-limited, but also not very well multi-threaded. I've done the same monitoring as you have, and for the most part the game only has three threads which use a substantial amount of CPU time.
Part of this is their choice of sticking with DirectX 9, which is known to be very CPU demanding (expensive draw calls). It took me some fiddling, but I did notice a substantial FPS increase if I reduce viewing distance (= less draw calls) and if I disable the Radar completely (= less draw calls).
If I were to speculate, I would guess that they haven't uncoupled the rendering engine from the game simulation sufficiently, and that they have issues parallelizing the latter. This means the game simulation is holding back the rendering. This is a very common situation when reusing old code, as it can be very difficult to convert old, non-multithreaded code to efficient multithreaded code. Usually it's easier to just rewrite it all...

Here's mine FWIW. Even in the most empty zones I hardly get more than 60 FPS. In populated zones it's typically 30-40 FPS, though it varies wildly, something which is especially annoying during dogfights.
System:
FX-8350
R9 290 DCII
16GB 2400MHz DDR3
Intel 910 PCI-E SSD
CPU and GPU are watercooled
I can overclock the cr*p out of my CPU but it makes practically no difference at all.

Re: Poor performance
Respect for this story...Waza88 wrote:I would like to know why I get poor performance out of this game.
Actually - maybe it is less difficult to re-make this game on CryEngine 3 instead of fixing this original one?

@ Waza88: You have and use a RealTek onboard sound chipset but you are using a very old and generic MicroSoft sound driver. Get the latest Win7 x64 RealTek driver (HD Audio Codec R2.75) from the RealTek update site.
Your OS is the European Windows N series which comes without Windows Media Player installed but you seems to have installed WMP separately, is that correct?
@ Lord Crc: You appear to have no sound device or sound driver installed, is that correct? Otherwise the DxDiag looks OK.
Just in passing, you seem to be having a lot of issues with your printer installation although that may not be relevant here.

A dog has a master; a cat has domestic staff.
Yes, sadly WMP is pretty much essential for many programs and features. I don't actually use it but it is installed.
As for sound drivers I don't care about them since I take optical signal out and feed it to Cambridge audio DAC.
I doubt that the sound driver would help with anything since disabling sounds from the game doesn't help either.
I could connect the DAC to the PC via USB but I rather have electrical separation between the two and since I cannot bypass the windows kernel driver without using specialized programs it really isn't worth the trouble either.
If there is a option to install just the driver without control panel or additional software I might upgrade the driver.

That'd be because I generated the report while logged on from work via RDP. I can however assure you my sound card is not the reason for my or the vast majority of other users' performance issues.Alan Phipps wrote:@ Lord Crc: You appear to have no sound device or sound driver installed, is that correct? Due to the nature of this game, there's no reason why one shouldn't be entirely GPU limited while flying in space if you have a modern, quad-core CPU. Meaning easily 120+ FPS if you have good GPU and turn down the graphics.
It's however very clear that this game is not capable of that, which means there are some architectural issues with the game engine preventing it from reaching this potential.
I have a capital shipyard stuck in darned hot air. I tried to order one of my ships to go repair there 50 hours ago and that stupid ship dealer is still waiting for the ship to arrive blocking me from ordering or refitting ships.
Is there some kind of workaround for this?
Maybe I need to sell the ship it is trying to repair?
Sucks because it's kind of a rare ship I capped from reivers.
The ship in question is sitting idle and there are no planned trips for it and it has been running errands for me while that idiot is still waiting for it to arrive.
EDIT: Selling the ship worked. Now it's escort ship is flying around aimlessly trying to escort "NIL"
EDIT2: The escort ship traveled somewhere and was twirling in empty space and disappeared.
