Long range scanning

Just started on a free play and need to make some money. How does Long range scanning work? I enable it, press R but can't seem to pick up anything. What am I doing wrong here?

You have to hold down R for a few seconds then release. When you do it right a white pulse comes out of your vessel, and if you pick something up it's indicated by white circles.

white circles really indicate an echo from something, you need to head there and see if its really something.

Usually you find container which you carefully shoot and then a drop shows up which you can get in the ship by flying over it.
