Current [POLL] Would you use Steam for Rebirth?
Since you can no longer vote in the old thread and discussion in there is still very heated, I decided to start another poll with X-Rebirth just around the corner.
The main point of contention seems to be whether X-Rebirth will be available only on Steam, and will people still buy it if so.
For the sake of this poll, we'll assume all sales are to be exclusively through Steam.
1st Edit: For more about Steam from a purely informative perspective;
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steam_%28 ... elivery%29
2nd Edit: For those who wish, the Steam link for X-Rebirth.

heck yes, love steam, and it's the only way I could get Rebirth.
without steam pc gaming would be way worse than it's current state, Rebirth and Star Citizen may never came without the success of steam.
steam DRM hating? laughable, son, where have you been? DRM has been there since big floppy diskettes age, in fact back in the day when you lose your media you lost your game, with steam you'd have no worry about it.

Anyone remember those floppy disk games that could only be installed once on one machine? That completely sucked. Hence the reason I love steam, I never have to worry about my games getting lost, scratched, etc.nap_rz wrote:heck yes, love steam, and it's the only way I could get Rebirth.

For the Angel of Death spread his wings on the blast, And breathed in the face of the foe as he passed, And the eyes of the sleepers waxed deadly and chill, And their hearts but once heaved, and for ever grew still!

Still have to worry about games on Steam not working, offline mode not working, cancelling my 8gb download and starting from 0% when I resume the next day, autopatching a faulty patch which I either have to install or play without patches. Also, Steam's not the only store, so the games on the other stores do not get scratched, lost etc.DarkKlown77 wrote: Anyone remember those floppy disk games that could only be installed once on one machine? Star Citizen came as a result of the success of crowdfunding and Kickstarter... After DF's Broken Age, inXile's WL2, Obisidian's PE... You know the Kickstarter craze that came about last year? I wonder what that has to do with Steam considering most of the Kickstarter projects promise DRM-free games. Shadownrun Returns got a ton of flak after they mentioned that only the Steam version will be the one which will be supported in the long run thanks for licensing issue with M$ and quite a number of people asked for refunds.nap_rz wrote:

steam success was what made digital download flourished which was in the end kick starting the Kickstarter trend, any veteran pc gamers should've easily recognized it.cw8 wrote:Star Citizen came as a result of the success of crowdfunding and Kickstarter... had steam failed by the time current gen consoles matured we could probably saw even less AAA games on PC which would've in turn further hurting PC gaming even more and at the end no big players (dev) would even want to invest at the platform; without popular AAA games to attract mainstream in given time the dire situation would also kill niche games.

Kickstarter succeeded because of the crowd's burning desire for old school type of games, namely adventure, turn-based RPGs/strategy games, sim and space sim games because 3 years back and before there are none to very few on the market. Also because of the other burning desire to bypass publishers who have proven a pain in the ass thanks to endless DLCs or draconic DRM schemes. Those are the 2 major reasons. It might be a bubble now, that might pop eventually or it might just have continued success down the long run, no one knows.nap_rz wrote: steam success was what made digital download flourished which was in the end kick starting the Kickstarter trend, any veteran pc gamers should've easily recognized it.
So if I strike lottery today, I'll have Steam to thank?

I've met many people with this view, my main aim is to see just how many people (those who'd not normally use Steam for any reason) would be willing to use Steam under the right circumstances.

I'm expecting a lock at some stage after X-Rebirth's release, to get one prior to that event would be very ......... disappointing to say the least. This poll should interest Egosoft immensely as it will eventually show some interesting statistics, especially once they start getting sales figures on the games release.

Same applies to sites like GoG. I "lost" some games from my Steam account once and had to produce my Steam receipt to prove my purchase before they would give them back, like they don't have a copy of that. Plus you can "back-up" hard copies.
dougeye wrote:this poll actually has options on it! not half ass if you like steam ill just about put up with it positive option.
I tried to include enough to give a detailed overview while keeping it simple. i.e. Who's a definitive yes/no, & since we know everyone already wants the game, what would it take to make them buy it.

Negativity? Shame on you, we're just trying to help Egosoft derive some interesting mathematical and economical statistics by comparing two (2) data resources with a large chronological separationelexis wrote:I can't find the "how is this any different to the last Steam X:Rebirth poll?" option.

But, to answer your question;
*The old poll is closed.
*The old poll was created Thu Oct 06, 2011 5:35 pm, much changes in 2 years.
*The old poll says 25% of the "forum-active" fans would not support X-Rebirth through Steam.
*The old poll did not allow for a definitive YES.
*The old poll had fewer MAYBE's.
*The old poll was (as someone put it) done at a time when Steam hate was rampant.
*The old poll was not not as close to the release date.
*The old poll was done when release on Steam wasn't certain.
*The old poll was not done by me.

- Fair enough
- It was also posted to for those 2 years
- Point?
- Find me an unbiased user-created forum poll and ill eat my hat.
- ^
- It wasn't rampant, higher than usual yes but then people are far more likely to post about things they don't like than things they do.
- Well everyone thought it was at the time
- Actually the vast majority of the activity in that thread occurred when steam was announced as exclusive. (quite some time ago)

I think everyone understands that a games first year (while its price retains a premium value) is the most important.
If 25% of your fan base who would have purchased the game don't pay the premium price then you need to make that revenue up some how (although you will never repair the damage done to the relationship held with those fans).
If the price drops by 80% after six (6) months, you need five (5) times as many sales to get the same revenue. If it drops by 90% after one (1) year ..... well you understand what I'm getting at.
This poll will help show the enormity of this divide in a strait forward statistical way. What ever the bullsh1t we argue about when saying we luv/neutral/hate Steam, its always subjective and inconclusive.
Maths doesn't lie (much). Statistics from two (2) polls will show so much definitive and productive information, how can we in good concious pass up such an offer? I'm always like to move forward, I'm about learning, I hope everyone else feels the same.
Don't forget to vote!

That I did not know, but it helps me to understand better some of the things I've read. Till this point in time I had thought going exclusively through Steam was still under discussion. I'm normally a very positive person .... think I might go hit the Vodka.elexis wrote:Actually the vast majority of the activity in that thread occurred when steam was announced as exclusive.
