Unfortunately, unless you pay attention to audio warning like "Attention, one of your ships is under attack in sector Patriarch's Conclusion", after the ship is destroyed you don't have onscreen notification, such data just gets silently logged into player logbook. While I hate that fact myself, I got used to check my logbook before each save. This way I can roll back just a few minutes and take out the threat before it's too late.

If you run game on SETA a lot of times you don't get informed by audio message at all. I lost a station to such attack recently.

On a side note, I check player statistics before saving too, because there's an issue (on my PC at least) that a ***modified*** tag just appears randomly out of nowhere, and I like to keep my game vanilla.

Actually, the more you play, the less you use SETA, in my opinion. Once you own 100+ ships you don't have time to just sit there anymore. You'll be renaming ships, equipping them remotely, setting up CAG waypoints etc.

I actually never use SETA at all. I also have learned that one ship more or less is not all that much to get excited about in the long run. Though I do note the hull number of the scurvy pirate and make a point of tracking him down and killing him...just for the principle.

Losing ships is part of the game, I'm afraid :). And yes, a short entry in the log is often the only clue that you lost it.
You can minimize your loses by setting a sector blacklist for your CAGs, and if you're playing AP, your Mk3 traders.

If a ship is docked in a station that is destroyed there is no notification

If your ship is killed in a single salvo, there is no notification (xenon Q)

You are only notified if there is time to send the notification after the ship has been damaged, but before it is destroyed.

In my experience.

Dear Mr Ray F ............

To whom it may concern ............

Recently our pirate task force encountered one of your freighters ... we ordered your captain to stand down and deliver his ship and goods to us ... he declined , and sadly we were then forced to destroy his/your ship ...

it has come to our attention that you were not informed of our decision in a timely manner . On behalf of the pirate fleet , i want to convey our condolences and our true apologies for our lack of informing you in a timely manner .

i hope that next time we can all avoid these types of situations with swift and unconditional surrender .

Yours truly

Pirate scum .

If you grown a huge empire with all the protection in setors used by you, you will get such annoying notfications about attacks pretty frequently.... ;p

ok guys ,
i know that losing ships is part of the game,
but losing a ship when you just starting up and have 4-5 ships and every penny counts, its a lot (in my opinion.)

Timsup2nothin, can u please explain to me how to get the pirates hull number??? i want to send him a present..

Dear Mr J.T Marsh.....

I have a brand new, shiny , and very cute torpedo prototype with your name on it :)

Regards,
Ray.

It get worse, you can often not get a message when one of your stations is under attack as well. This happened to me the other night, it was just lucky I happen to be looking at my property list and saw the red flashing station. I just got there in time to save the station with only 20% hull left!

Why the hell are you people building complexes and sending traders in dangerous sectors? :gruebel: Seriously.
Myself, I built my complex in Argon Sector M148, and my traders are in Home o´ light, argon prime, red light, power circle, antigone memorial and ore belt. I haven´t lost a single ship (except captured harrier that flew through Treasure chest and got wiped out by terrans) and not a single notification. I don´t own any capital ships or sector defences except my own personal-controlled Megalodon, and I spend all time doing plot missions.

There are occasions where your freighter gets attacked and wiped out in a single volley (I had a Xenon P kill one recently), but most of the time, your more experienced traders can drop a few fighter drones and escape. The rookies are in a lot more danger.

In most games, I NEVER create Universal Traders. Once they hit experience level 6, you can restart them as a Sector Trader and it will prompt you for a RANGE (0-1). At range 1, they can trade in sectors adjacent to the one they're "based" in, and with each 2 or 3 levels of experience, you can increase their maximum trade range by another sector. By setting them in the right sector with a Range of 2 or 3, you can keep them from ever straying into Pirate or Xenon sectors. A Regional Trader (sector trader with range > 0) with a Range of 3 can cover the complete set of Argon sectors in the Argon Prime vicinity, without entering Pirate space.

When you can afford to turn a few STs loose as UTs for the potential gains on long distance runs (using Jumpdrives), and the occasional loss of one or two won't hurt you, then it's a decision you can make later. Until then, I'd strongly recommend keeping them on a shorter leash.

complex?? i wish!! haha
its just a M factory. i was doing some missions to build up rep and money , and the same time remote trading with my freighters using the 'sell for best price' command and using 2-3 gate jumps max around argon prime mainly..

I have spent my money on upgrading all cargo ships with jumpdrive with the idea that when pirates (and IF i get attacked) i could remote tell them to jump to safety...i was always trading in safe areas...this guy went , i think, to Cloudbase SE..i remember its a sector with almost nothing in it..dont remember if thats the name..anyway..

Everything has a unique number in the game, something like YKNBV-35, visible in the info, and possibly in the list to the right side of the map.

And, to reply to your original bewildered complaint, in X3AP I think they have coded it so that pirates specifically go after you a few hours in after you start. For fun. A bunch of bigger ships appear and actively hunt YOU.

How dare they code that in, it's unfair!

Nothing like that happens.

Well I have one example of a pirate M6 + escorts appearing and gunning for me a few hours into my game start 6 months ago, despite harmless rank and neutrality towards pirates with that start.

Can you provide proof that "nothing like that EVER happens"?

Well I played X series since 2004, and I´ve been battleing the pirates like mad, but surgically organised pirate assassination attempts never happened, except while playing the Shady Bussiness plot, and when I was testing the Bankrupt assassin game start for a while.

When you went back in the log and found where your ship was destroyed it should have said "by pirate nova xxxxxx" or similar. That pirate may get destroyed or otherwise disappear, but generally if you hustle over to the scene of the crime you have a good chance of finding him in a nearby sector and extracting revenge.
