Forum Maintenance

Post by BurnIt! »

Update:

The defective component has been exchanged and the original server is back up and running, however it may take up to 72 hours until everything is once again running through that server.

If all goes well the switch back to the original server will happen seamlessly.
(and if my tweaks were successful it'll even be faster than it was before)

Original message:

Due to a hardware failure in the primary forum server we have re-routed forum traffic to an alternate server to maintain accessibility, however you may experience intermittent outages, error messages or reduced speed while we're working to fix the problem.

We have updated the DNS records so forum.egosoft.com points to the alternate server, however it may take up to 72 hours until these updates have propagated through the net.
If you have trouble accessing the forum, please try http://www.egosoft.com/forum/index.php instead of the regular address for now.

We apologize for the inconvenience.

Thanks for letting us know, BurnIt! Though mysteriously, the forums seem to be running faster than usual for me.

I second imperium3. When I was on the forum earlier this morning, it did seem everything was working quicker.
A couple more faults and it will be blindiingly fast.

I dearly hope that this is a ruse and they are about to make a major Rebirth announcement on the forum.

+1 on the faster for me statements. It has been acting weird for me for quite some time. In some cases it takes over 10 mins to load a thread. I wonder if it was bugging out a long time ago and just now totally failed.

Old server hamsters died, some Egosoft minion was sent down to the local pet store to buy new ones, pet store was all out so they are using gerbils temporarily until the new batch of hamsters arrive :P

There seems still to be a menu glitch that may yet take a while to clear as BurnIt! said. At the moment if you use back/forward buttons with menu pages you sometimes get a different in age version (older or younger) from the last time you were there. Sometimes refreshing a menu page takes you to an even older version.

I think that is a sign of the links swapping between different servers that are not yet fully in synchronisation. Once full sych is achieved all should be good.

Unfortunately on occasions the refreshed Forum Index page is still lagging well behind the forums themselves (which themselves when refreshed sometimes lag behind actual latest posts) as though there are still server version differences - but I expect it will all catch up eventually.

EDIT 1: Actually if anything it is getting worse - I now consider the forum menu and refresh system to be rather broken. Almost every time you refresh a menu page now you get a randomly ordered recent but probably outdated display version. Check the times of the last posts in the forums as you repeatedly refresh the Forum Index.

EDIT 2: OK, it seems better now.

I actually know what's causing this and I'm working on ways to get it fixed.
It's more apparent the more active the forums are.

There should no more back and forth be going on between the servers - if you see that "random ordering" issue then you're completely on the repaired (original) server.

Ok I *think* I've got that under control now - please report if you continue to see the described behaviour.
