I have a number of ships but I don't actually class them as a 'fleet'. I like to do all my combat flying solo, so all my other ships are docked.
My 'collection' comprises the following:

M2 - 1 each of: Kyoto, Megalodon, Python, Boreos
M1 - None
M7 - 1 each of: Cerberus, Tiger, Panther Raider, Cobra, Shrike, Thresher (which I have yet to pilot)
M6 - 2xHeavy Centaur, 2xCentaur, 3xSpringblossom, 1xKha'ak Corvette, 1xDragon, 1xVidar
M3 - 1xAamon Prototype, 2xSpifyre, 1xKha'ak Fighter, 1xChimera, 1xNova Vanguard, 1xFalcon Sentinel, 7xXenon L, 1xMamba
M4- 1x#Decca Deaf, 1xScorpion Raider, 3xKha'ak Interceptor, 1xBuzzard Hauler, 2xXenon M
M5 - 3xKha'ak Scout, 1xJaguar Raider, 1xFujin
TM - 3xBoa, 1xChokaro
TS - I've no idea! but approx. 15 of assorted types
TL - 1x Mammoth, 1xOrca

As already stated, because I like to fly solo, my current battle fleet consists of my Kyoto with a docked Springblossom for fighter combat and a docked TS to carry extra missiles & e-cells and any dropped loot I pick up. And I enjoy my game thoroughly.
There's just something about trying to fight off 2-3 M2's and a few Q's and M6's that are speedily bearing down on me. It really gets my adrenaline flowing.

Dream fleet:

One Tyr as my flagship, escorted by a pair of Boreases, plus two Cobras and four Hades bombers for stand-off support. Then a couple of Raptors for fighter support, filled with a combination of Cutlasses for heavy strike capability, Pikes as interceptors and Kestrels for scouting and catching other M5.
Medium escort would consist of four Shrikes, each covered by a pair of Hyperion Vanguards, plus four tigers acting as a fast attack wing. I would also use Heavy Dragons as light escort wings.

Cheap fleet:

Shrike, plus a couple of Mamba Raiders if I could get it without blowing the budget. If that fails, a couple of Heavy Dragons.

Heh your 50 million doesn't place a constraint on the "cheap fleet" because we can capture ships.

It's also a bit hard to calculate; prices of ships are readily available, but who's going to sit and calculate the costs of shields, weapons, missiles, and extensions? Esp. if the "fleet" is an actual fleet of a few M3's.

My cheap fleet would probably be a Hyp.V topped up with high-yield missiles and a variety of weapons incl. flamethrowers in the hold, backed up by a small wing of Nova Raiders for extra damage.

Cheap fleet: M7M with marines, pods, and missiles for boarding.

Dream fleet - Hyperion Vanguard, Split Tiger & Megalodon. Dont like having many ships because dont wanna be worried about them all.
& by the way, it seems these 3 can do almost anything in X universe...from trading, escorting to mass annihilation...

Cheap fllet - Cap the HYP, Buy a Tiger. (You get 15 million spare credits too)

This is a fun question. I want my fleet to be managable when i start invading core sectors and possibly patroling boron space to keep them oppressed.

The Hub, I think I've figured out is actually a weapon and part of my fleet. So are the Xenon who will stream out (hopefully) upon the unsuspecting people or Argon Prime or Kingdoms End.

As for my personal armada. I'm in an M2, there's at least one or two more M2's of varying race. This is obviously a Split operation, Python is too weak to operate indepently, a Teladi M2, my Boreas, an Odysseus with PSG's to start alone on the far side of the sector or an alternate jump gate and meet in the middle. And then an Akuma, Brigantine any kind of pirate to help out.

Now the Carrier, one should suffice, 4 m2's is much, 3 is better. I'm not picky and havn't gotten that far in my first TC game yet. Still have AP but I'll be done for a while after this. With little knowledge I think the galleon looks cool and as long as it holds 30 fighters that should be more than enough that i can't command them all.

Fighters will be a mix, 30 in 5 per group is six wings, four out, 2 back up or protecting larger ships. Each wing is all the same to have the same speed and engage targets as a unit. A Mamba wing, Novas (perhaps raiders), Paranid M3, and Boron M3, Can have Yaki or Terran M3 but i'm not familiar with them yet and we already have too many wings. At least 2 M4 wings. The newer ones I don't use, I think they're called the Asp, maybe some Mako's. There might as well be at least one M5 wing for giggles. I'm up to 8 wings of 5 at least.

Then you need M6 and M7 now, M8's and M7M. One or two M6 gaurding the Carrier. Maybe some leading a fighter wing or a wing of thier own. Yeah a wing of thier own, 2 wings, keep it managable. And only have 5 fighter wings tops, 3 M3, 1 M4, 1 M5, 2 M6 wings. Total 11-12 M6 with carrier gaurds. One Dragon wing + Skiron or Heavy Centaur wing.

2-4 M7's acting as independent command takers like any of the M2's. Or again a wing of the 2-3 m2's and a wing of the 2-3 m7's. The Tiger is the only one I really know. Any M7 with good shields. Shrike rings a bell and the Boron don't get included much.

One M7M should suffice, perhaps 2. A cobra and Kraken are well spoken of and sound fierce. Perhaps placed mid range between carrier and M2's. Hopefully his turrets will rattle off missiles if he just idles in the middle of it all or launch some Marines since we're pilaging core sectors. One or two M8's for more barrage options. leave them hanging around the carrier until needed.

That should be it. Oh and some frieghters to scoop up all the loot from thier factories. A TL to supply the fleet and hold the loot which is meaningless at this point and more of a hassel to sell but you may get chips and tubes you need to make ships at your HQ.

M7's with a variety of smaller escorts are then needed to patrol Boron borders and prevent them from rebuilding and core sectors need multiple M2's surrounding the ship yard.

My 50 million dollar fleet?

A Tiger.

Bah. Fleets are a huge hassle to manage for a simple country hyper-chicken lawyer like myself. My dream fleet and my actual fleet are, therefore, the same thing:

A corvette with some guns in it.
A big transport or frigate with some fighters in it.
A space truck to run errands for my transport/frigate

This allows me to engage in the Vecordian Loop of Acquisition:

Step 1: Fight a thing
Step 2: Take the bits that fall off/out
Step 3: Put those bits in the biggest ship
Step 4: Sell those bits for profits
Step 5: Drinking binge
Step 6: Wake up and check wallet
Step 7: Sigh unhappily
Step 8: Return to step 1

Dreamfleet? Bearing in mind I'm playing XRM, which adds a few new ships, mine would be
1 M1+ (Probably either Terran or Argon) (bigger and nastier than a normal M1)
3 M7c (Two Griffons and a Forseti) (Forseti is ATF M7c)
A wing of 6 M3Bs (M3 sized bombers!) in each carrier
A wing of 6 M3+s in each, most likely Fenrirs, maybe Cutlasses.
A wing of 6 Sabres in the M1
A wing of 6 Solanos in the M1
A wing of Blastclaw Prototypes in the Forseti
More M3+ wings for any ships with space
A few replacements for each wing.
A Heavy Assault M7 (Think vanilla's tiger or shrike.), most likely the ATF Kvasir
8 Anti-Fighter multi-gun corvettes, probably Vidar Sentinels.
1 Vidar, Player Ship.

Maybe a few M2-s if the HAM7 is outmatched.

Cheapfleet? Terran TM (Carries 8!) with a wing of M3Bs. Only way to get any anti-capital firepower with 50 million.

Cheap Fleet

1 Fully equipped Mistral Super Frieghter packed with as many Fighter Drones MKII as I can afford = I Win Everything.

If my math is right thats close to about 1500 drones. Which would do about 3.5 million shield and about 400 thousand hull damage a second if they were all attacking the same target at the same time.
