Hello,
I have been playing X3 and subsequently X3:TC for some time now. I enjoy the game immensely, its depth and complexity bringing me back repeatedly.
Obviously the game has a main story quest line and other tertiary quest lines which are interesting and fun to play. What I like about the game, however, is the capacity for generating your own goals.
My question to you all is what motivates you to play after the story has ended (or indeed even before)? Is it purely profitsss? Perhaps galactic domination (either enabled through scripts or just through sheer determination!)? Maybe the creation of a perfectly functioning corporation, entirely self sufficient, with hierarchical fleet structure?
I wonder what other paths people have created for themselves.

i've posted this before but i never get tired of it , universal domination is my goal, starting with replacing the xenon as the major threat, i currently have x347 under total control and am doing the same with 598, i just finished the plots yday but i've been laying siege for over 2 weeks so my advice is, find an incredibly huge goal(which will take you months to achieve) and stic with it, that way you don't get stumped by the relative shortness of the games plots

In TC and AP I started off with a list of things I want to do, these than get sidelined whilst I complete the plot. When things slacken off my original goals reassert themselves and usually get partially completed before the the plot picks up again and they are sidelined till the next lull. Thus my goals are being achieved much faster in AP than TC due to the relative lack of plot, but Space is big, even when I'm confined to the Solar System so there's plenty of things to see and people to do.

I'm generally finding my core motivation in the X3 games is good old fashioned greed. I see thing, I want thing, I get thing Namely ships, like working up the money, rep and work to get a loaded Mamba Raider.
Dunno what would get me going once I've tasted the top of the ladder. Likely mods, because I'm not much of a fan of self-imposed limitations.

Also means to con/swindle (do-up), beat up (do-over), kill (do-in), etc.

yes but the actual standalone "do"'s connotation is to have sex, hence my attempt at a witty comment...ill go to my hole now

Not neccessarily, that would be a contraction of 'Do-it' as all of the others can be contracted to 'do'.

Using slightly modified starting conditions leaves me starting from practically nothing and ending up with my own vast empire. You know, the usual.
I'm RPing (making sure every choice I make make sense for the character and not just powergaming) a Goner who is on the search for the fabled Goner Aran, so he stole a ship & an ufjd and took off for adventure.
0 Credits
Goner Ranger
0 and/or Negative Rep with various races (I can't land in any core sectors yet and I have no means of buying a ship since I have to get my rep up).
Hub Plot (AP) enabled.
First goal: Save up and get a Tenjin as a personal ship.

Peaceful takeover of a ship?
My personal goal in TC right now is to build up my empire. This includes becoming (almost) completely self-sufficient with multiple fleets and police for sectors that I've "claimed". I'm probably also going to use the CLS exploit to overtune some of my personal ships and get multiple PHQs. After that I'll probably work on occupying Xenon and Kha'ak sectors, and eventually the entire universe.

Actually, the Goner start in AP is pretty good.
I used it for my AP story, for the eventual re-take of Twisted Skies.
But as far as the original question,...what motivates me to continue?...
It's just the knowledge that i have not done everything yet.
In my main game from when the first update appeared for TC, I have done the main plots (bluebooks).
In other games of TC ,I have
done the corporation plots,
wrote a tutorial which included experimentation with multiple stations occupying the same space,
built 100+ station complexes,
worked a bit with CAGs,
Mobile mining ...both personally and setting up TSs etc.
have done most types of generic missions.
killed a Q or few.
Boarded a ship or two and got the Aran in AP.
RE'd and built a few ships
used mods to acquire ships that are in the files but not in the game.
But I have not collected at least one of every ship that's in the game, while playing vanilla.
I have not place at least one station or complex in every non-xenon or kha'ak sector ,in a single game.
And although I have done a bit of fighting,I am not expert enough to know which gunnery in which ship is best for any particular situation.
So when I start a ne w game,or pick up from an old one,I ask myself what i have not done yet in the game so far .
eg. Iif starting a new game, which game start have I not done yet?

Haha, well his parents were Goners, so he was also one by association, even though he always thought it was mind numbingly dull. When an opportunity presented itself to get out of there, he took it.

I enjoy role-playing my corporation. Having specific naming conventions for my ships and complexes, defining a remit and operating within it. If I am attacked by pirates, reprisal attacks are a neccessity (I will have my rewengay!). Creating special task forces for specific misssions (complete with cover story and names), such as taking our a factory that is in direct competition with my own or removal of some particularly pesky capital ship. Or creation of a defensive front, complete with supply lines, commanding ships and units with veteran status.
Truly it is a joy.
