I was just wondering if we have any forum members that work here or in a pizza joint. I got an acquaintance who is looking for Assistant managers and General Managers and I might be able to become an Assistant manager. Anyhow I have to get hired on first and was wondering if anyone know what it is like to work for them. Thanks.

I worked as a deliverer for a single day, of which about 2 hours was spent driving. The reason it was only 2 hours was because at the end of that two hours my car was mangled in a ditch... The assistant manager came out to where I was and sat with me while waiting for the police to show up, and did his absolute best to impress upon me the importance of not telling the police that I was on the clock when this happened. I think that it was for both of our sakes, as the company could have a liability issue, and police in my area just love to give out tickets to pizza delivery drivers. I kept my mouth shut on that fact and ended up not getting into any real trouble, other than losing my job on the first day of work (epic sadface), and no longer having a working vehicle to get around in. I had just put on new tires too (more sadfaces).

This was all for Domino's Pizza. I probably should have driven around in their area of coverage for a while before nightfall to get a better idea of where everything was; or gotten a GPS system haha!

Was the best car I have ever owned too... '98 or '99 Nissan Sentra GXE. Perfect little car, no other troubles with it other than ker-failing into a ditch at 30-40 miles per hour. Kept me entirely safe throughout the crash too, only had a swollen knuckle for a few days to remind me not to take my eyes off the road for even a second when driving in unfamiliar territory.

PS. I know this doesn't really help at all with your question...just haven't told that story to anyone before and thought it might be an interesting anecdote relevant to working for Domino's Very Happy

franchise and I know the district manager... that a good thing or a bad thing I dunno...

Also what makes me kinda nervous is the fact that I'm only considering this so that I can bring my fiancee here to live. I have to make 19k a year and with the job I currently have I really don't know if ill make that or not.

P.S. Anyone here know anything on immigration forums for the US?

I haven't worked for a pizza-delivery franchise, but here are a few things I do know.

1) Be careful with getting too excited about job titles in the service industry, especially "Assistant Manager" or even "Manager." In US Employment Law, a member of management may not be required to be paid "overtime" as is compensated for in their salary. So, for instance, you negotiate a salary that works out to be a comfortable amount of pay, per hour, for what they describe to you as a normal work week. However, in reality, you'll end up doing ten hours or more of that, without "overtime" compensation... That's why you see so many "Assistant Managers" and "Shift Managers" who are on salaried pay in service industries and working cash registers or stocking shelves... The employer can save a buck or three by giving them a snazzy title. (Though, flagrant abuse can get them in serious trouble.) One way to compensate for this without a straight increase in salary is to get insurance coverage and the like. Paid vacations are nice, but don't count on them.

2) Using your automobile for work - Be sure that your role is clearly stated and if you are required to deliver pizzas or travel between stores frequently during the day, check on your insurance coverage and be aware of tax laws. You can be compensated by your employer for mileage, which is the norm for delivery persons. This has special status under the tax code, so be sure you're familiar with it. Also, your insurance MAY NOT cover you if you're driving your personal vehicle for work purposes. Be sure to check on that and see if you will be using your vehicle a lot for business purposes and need that extra coverage.

Likely, the last part has something to do with why the delivery person above was told by the manager to not admit they were in the act of delivering a pizza - If their insurance company found out, they might have refused any coverage.

3) If you have an "in" with a franchise, like knowing the owner, that's a great thing. You might be able to work your way up the chain of command. But, be advised, the principles I stated above about "management" titles extends all the way up until you get a job sitting at a desk in the main office. That's where it stops and something approaching a more normal management position starts. Until then, they'll work the dog-poop out of you. Very Happy

4) As far as salary and what you should expect, it should definitely be over 19k per year. Minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, which is about $11k a year, which is under the poverty line. In a management position for a pizza delivery store, I'd expect a guaranteed pay of at least 1.5 times that, with profit/performance sharing, insurance and benefits that would usually easily double it without question. If they offer you profit sharing or performance based bonuses, ask about the history of that in their company. (What's the average amount earned through profit sharing and performance based bonuses per year per position being sought?)

5) As far as immigration forums, I'm not sure what you're looking for. Do you mean web-forums that immigrants frequent or websites with US Immigration information? If the former, I can't help you. If the latter - http://www.us-immigration.com

6) Evaluation periods and the "90 day wonder." Most companies have some sort of evaluation period before the employee is entitled to full benefits. In some, the pay during the eval period is actually better than what they would get outside of it. Very Happy But, normally, after this period, stuff like insurance coverage, other benefits, vacation and sick-day accrual kick in. Be sure to check on this to see how it might effect you, since you have a ceiling amount you have to reach for earning "at least 19k." I don't know if that is a hard figure you have to earn each year or not. But, because of the eval period, it could effect your fiscal year-end earnings for that year.

Mork - The only real reason I'm looking into this is to be able to get an apartment for my Fiancee and I. I found out I have to make over 18,700 dollars a year for her to be able to even be considered for residential status even though I'm a citizen. I've known her for 10 years also. However the immigration filing forums are getting me confused as to what we really need.

I just started my current job six months ago in the hopes of becoming a manager and making enough to cover expenses I don't really want to start another job even if it is more money. However my employer is paying for my health insurance out of his own pocket which is $1,300 a year. Also talking about the abuse, I saw that at my old job and its one of the reasons why I left it.
