AP: Slower the more you play?

Post by omik »

I guess the question I have is: Does the game just get slower the longer you play? I'm currently 20 hours into AP, and it is MUCH slower than my 10 hour save game, which runs almost completely smooth.

EDIT: Even if I restart AP or my computer, it is still as laggy as before, so this isn't an issue about my playing session building up lag.

I don't have any factories built, and I only have one sector trader (Though I have about 15 other ships parked through about 7 other sectors). Will performance increase if I park all of the ships in the same sector? Or is it due to the age of the universe?

As a note, changing graphics settings from max to lowest doesn't change the FPS at all, so I'm thinking this might be due to the processing of the game's universe?

EDIT: I've decided to include my dxdiag, I have the latest nvidia drivers, SP1, and all of the latest windows updates.

Here is the dxdiag:

It will certainly get a bit slower, but that shouldn't happen until you really start building up an empire.

Could you post your specs please?

Specs:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
Mobo: ASUS p5B-Deluxe
RAM: 4 Gigs DDR2 RAM
GPU: Nvidia GTX 460
And I have four different SATA harddrives connected.

I have yet to build a single factory, and the game is slow in every sector, even when I am docked. I don't know what could be causing this, especially considering this is the untouched vanilla version of x3tc and albion prelude. I only have 20 ships, all docked somewhere, and one sector trader going.

Additionally, every other 2 seconds or so while in SETA (6x), the game stutters/freezes for a very brief moment. It is making the game nearly unplayable for me.

I would do a Steam verify gamefiles cache. If still issues after that then please post a DxDiag. Instructions for doing so are in the first Announcement on this forum.

I've had issues like this, but save/restarting the game every 3 hours or so seems to help. The game uses more and more ram the longer you play. Doesn't seem to like letting go.

Actually that's sensible game design really, so long as it avoids running out of available memory. Caching loaded assets unless the memory is actually required for something else means you don't have to re-load those assets from the hard disk again the next time they are needed, reducing load times. Dumping any cached assets from memory as and when the memory is needed elsewhere is a quick and easy process so long as the engine is designed to manage memory usage properly.

The problem isn't the game getting slower the longer I play, its getting slower the more the universe "ages". Even if I restart the game, and even my computer, when I begin playing my game again, it is extremely slow. I am 20 hours into the game.

I've also excluded x3tc.exe and x3ap.exe from ffdshow, and I've tried deleting the Haali files, though I don't know if I deleted them successfully.

To check if you have deleted Haali successfully, run another DxDiag and save the text to your desktop and then look at it yourself. There should now be no mention of Haali anywhere under this section towards the lower half of the DXDiag:

DirectShow Filters

DirectShow Filters:
WMAudio Decoder DMO,0x00800800,1,1,WMADMOD.DLL,6.01.7601.17514

.....
.....
Haali Media Splitter,0x00800001,0,1,splitter.ax,
Haali Media Splitter (AR),0x00400000,1,1,splitter.ax,
.....

One other thing to try. See if you can get a more recent brand-named Win7 audio driver (eg RealTek etc) as used by your mobo and onboard sound chipset rather than use that default generic MicroSoft one.

A few players are experiencing fps issues with AP that are not seen in TC. Many other players are not. The cause is unknown as yet but we are looking for common causes in the reports with DxDiags etc. Please be prepared for perhaps further questions about your systems and set-ups in due course.

omik, you may be running into problems with memory shortage. Try to view "Resource monitor" memory page while you're playing X3 and look at the "hard faults" count. It's given in faults per second (average I think). You can install up to 8GB on your mobo which will run X3 a lot better. I'm using 6GB and X3 runs out of memory given sufficient time with no reloads. Really bad when you're in a DiD game :(

The 32 bit X3 Engine can only use about 3.5 Gb of your RAM. The other RAM can be used by your video card and other applications and services but 4 Gb is plenty sufficient to play X3 in a satisfactory manner. No this X3AP fps issue is something else restricted to a few players and their systems.

The progressive slowdown in X3:TC and subsequent versions have been a bug since the first release, mitigated somehow it has never been fully eliminated.

I have also noticed certain slowdown after 20+ hours, nothing too big, but I figure it will get worse as I discover new sectors or I add stations, etc I gues, will check that after a while.

I'm experiencing major slowdown here as well. If I start new game and fly in Argon Sector M148 Fraps gives 45-60 fps, but in my 21 hour game (Date 768-05-01 20:51) it gives only 14-18 fps in that same place. (And everywhere else too.)

At this point of the game in any kind of combat situation fps often drops below 10 which makes it unplayable.

I don't have any custom mods etc.

A also found out that save game size has grown a lot. At fresh start it's about 8MB, now it's over 12MB. So far I have only 17 ships and 7 stations.

A member from day one of the forum and your first post. Welcome out into the light. :D

Anyway, please post your DXDiag report too. :)

Also, if you could upload that savegame somewhere so that someone could take a look at it, that would be very helpful.

Thanks!

Here is the requested savegame file: (link removed)

I get 15 fps right there. It raises a few if I turn around so that there is no stations and stuff in view but doesn't go over 20 fps.

Settings:
Resolution 1680x1050x32 Fullscreen

View Distance: Medium
Texture Quality: Medium
Shader Quality: Medium
Antialias: Off
Anisotropic Texture Filtering: Off

Lowering graphic settings or resolution doesn't give any improvement.

(Dxdiag removed)

Edit 20.12.2011 19:58 GMT+2: Issue causing low fps was found, unnecessary information removed.

On your save X09 I get 18 fps normal, 21 if I get away from the gate and stare at an empty sky, and from that position 11fps on SETAx10. Without SETA looking at empty sky, I get no difference by turning off HUD.

Click here to view my DxDiag

I tried some things and eventually managed to get the framerate up to 32. Here's what I did:

1. Fly to Hila's Joy, ejected and got a view of the open sky
2. Destructed every ship of every type in the universe including player ships, with exception of the one that player is in
3. Destructed every station, asteroid, debris and nebula in the universe
4. Deleted all global scripts. This one made the most difference
5. Waited a while to catch the max framerate (av 31, peaked at 32)
[ external image ]

I then loaded up an old TC3.1 save which was 6 days and 4 hours old with all plots completed (the hard way), 271 ships and 4 stations. I went through the above steps with it and following are the results:

Before removing anything: 136fps
Kill all ships except mine: 162fps
Kill my ships as well: 165fps
Kill all stations except mine: 168fps
Kill my stations as well: 201fps
Kill all asteroids/debris/nebula where possible: 202fps
Save and immediately reload: 210fps

Todays Unholy traitor start with around 10 mods, 4.5 hours playtime:
Viewing sky in Hila's Joy: 230fps
Disable HUD: 305fps
Kill all ships except mine: 460fps
Kill all stations: 510fps
Kill all asteroids/debris/nebula where possible: 734fps

[ external image ]

We're not done yet though. Try a few things in the script editor in Albion Prelude and you'll quickly discover that AP is in certain ways faster than TC. Doing the above steps on a fresh "Humble Merchant" start got the same seven hundred and something fps in TC, but considerably more in Albion Prelude:

[ external image ]

All tests done using res 1920 x 1080 32-bit, all gfx settings to max.

Hi. I think i'll post here rather than opening another thread, since i have the same problem.

First my Dxdiag :)
http://paste2.org/p/1830912

I have a savegame with about 24 played hours and the FPS are dropping to 16-18 in non-combat situations and to 2-4 every time i hit something with my lasers.

The whole time the game is running, none of my CPU cores reached 100%, maximum was about 80% at one core, and my GPU was always at about 20% load.

I did a little bit of testing on my own and want to share my results. Maybe it helps someone to figure the error out^^.

I first tried the standard methods of setting all my settings to the highest and to lowest settings and compared the results: No change in FPS even if i set every last thing in my gaphics driver to max and force them on the game.

Then i tried to change the processpriority of X3:AP to real time. That gave me a boost of about 1-2 FPS at the cost of stuttering sound.

Then, while looking at some posted dxdiag files, i noticed that everyone was using a 64 bit Windows 7. So i thought maybe it will help if i use the compatibility mode to change it to XP. Not working

Next thing was to disable sound in game and after that disabling my sound driver. Could have been something in connection with the "Hit" Sound when you hit an enemy with something. Still the same, no change.

Next try was to look at a memorydump to look what files, drivers etc... are loaded when running the game. Here i removed/renamed every loaded dll which was not located in the X3 or windows folder. Didn't work either...
Btw: Here is my x3ap.dmp in a readable format, or at least the human readable part of it : http://paste2.org/p/1830925

I've now compared it to a dump from X3TC and noticed these changes:
X3TC loads two different versions of comctl32.dll from the winsxs directory while X3AP loads only the older one from these two.

On the X3AP side, it loads these files which are not loaded in X3TC:
GdiPlus.dll from winsxs
mlang.dll from system32
wmadmod.dll from SysWOW64
wmasf.dll from WMASF.dll from system32
wmspdmod.dll from SysWOW64
wmvcore.dll from system32
and of course the new exe.

The problem is now... i don't know what to do with this information^^
Maybe its totally unrelated to the problem an i've only wasted my time ,but i thought i should post it here and maybe someone can find the error or at least a workaround in all that stuff.

So far...

I'm being forced to return to X3TC instead of continuing AP, which I am really disappointed about. X3TC continues to run smoothly for me, and AP has just been frustrating after playing 15-20+ hours. I'm hoping this gets fixed, and glenmcd's post analyzing the game save and comparing the two games is quite telling that it seems to be an issue with AP.

Thanks for the incredible games! I hope the information we're supplying is enough to get this issue fixed so I can enjoy all that AP has to offer :)

I suspect the issue I'm having is related. A brand new game is relatively fast, but the longer I play the slower it gets. Changing graphical settings makes very little difference. I really don't have all that big of an empire: only about 60 satellite and 20 ships flying about.

Interesting observation: if you quit, the frame rate increases while the fading out is occurring (before the loading screen). So whatever process is causing the lag, it is immediately stopped on a quit (but unfortunately it is back again on a reload).

glenmcd's post is interesting in that there's only 32 framerate with everything destroyed. If everything is destroyed, it should be higher FPS than a new game (where he gets hundreds of FPS with nothing destroyed).

It would go far for my faith in Egosoft's willingness to resolve customer complaints if they would start with the save game being analyzed by glenmcd and investigate what the cause of all the latency is.

I think perhaps I'll go back to X3TC too, for now. (Either that or suffer through ever-increasing framerate, probably by piloting a Panther Raider and letting my AI do all the shooting for me.) But I hope X3AP's issues are resolved because I do like those new ships and the war scenario!
