I know there is no MP and should never be with a game of this scale... one thing that might work as a side development for those that would be interested in it( i not being one of them while a couple Dog fights here and there would be fun but i could not imagine having an Eve FPS....) But what about a standalone built on the engine with a handful of systems, no commerce to actually render just ships that move about and letting a handful of players connect into it... just an X universe based fighter game... ?

Egosoft has neither the time or resources. Even if 'other' people do it - they would still need to put in a lot. In return for what? A pay monthly, dogfight only X-based game? Not enough people would pay for it to make it profitable.
Not to mention that everything to do with X is owned and copyrighted by Egosoft. Which obviously includes game engine.
Not viable. Not gonna happen.

Multiplayer with a small number of friends (NOT an MMO) would work very well for an X game. Playing with random strangers would not work, based on the amount of time required for a good X game, nor would having too many players. I bet my wife would play a coop X3 game with me. She would probably prefer the role of being an "empire manager" while I fly the ships and blow stuff up.
If anyone has played a coop game of Dawn of Discovery, I think that would be a good type of a model for coop multiplayer. Or if your friend is the competitve type, it could become a race between you two for economic or military domination.
I know multiplayer has been beaten to death in times past, but I still think it is worth considering, and would be a good selling point for future X games, provided the multiplayer aspect does not take away from the single player aspect.

no no i know this, I am just making a statement that the only viable way to accomplish multiplayer to appease those interested would be this route. and taking a chunck of code would save a whole lot of time in the dev department, but it would still be a feat. I am not saying PLEASE PLEASE DO ITTTT!!!! I NEEDZZZZ THIS!!! I am simply saying the only viable way to accomplish an X based multiplayer game would be this route.

X3 will not be re-engined for any Multiplayer (and Bernd has currently confirmed in interview that XR will not support MP in the current forecast). What happens with XR later on is probably best discussed after XR has been played for a while and there is some informed knowledge of the new engine and playstyle.
Since there have been so many previous MP discussion threads on the X3 engine this will be locked and the topic hopefully restarted in a future XR thread post-release.
