X3 multiplayer

Post by Pyroflash »

So, me and a couple of friends bought X3 hoping to play an epic space game together, well, we right about one thing, it is epic. The one thing we can't seem to figure out though, is why there is no multiplayer? I mean, epic space battles only seems like a fitting setting for having a good time with some friends, and I can't see why this functionality doesn't exist.

And the dead horse gets mulched further into paste. It doesn't exist because the developers don't wish to spend the time and money on features that drain resources from single player development.

First welcome to the X series of games...probably one of the best you'll ever get hooked on.

If you are keen on two or more playing the same game , you can , but not at the same time.

The last run I did , we had a sector each which we chose as our home base, plus a few sectors next to each other , connected to the home base via each other. Then one or two other sectors for access to EQ and ships/stations.

We had the game save for a few days at a time and passed it on to the next player.

We each had our own accounts tied to our stations ,so our traders were all homebased.

To get started , we used the main account and starter ship to get established, and shared the starter ship / unique / rare ships etc, until the PHQ was built.

The PHQ was used to place orders for ships we had the blueprints for.

We traded between ourselves.

This is a great way to learn from more experienced players in various fields of the game.

Unfortunately , our group got distracted by real life , so it is very dormant at the moment.

:( I had imagined some awesome co-op going on. Oh well, I guess I can still enjoy this game a lot even though it is single player only.

I hope the developers put some sort of multiplayer feature into the next game, even if it just co-op.

If you really want something where you have to work together to achieve goals, you could always try Eve Online. Somewhat similar to X3. Be warned, the learning curve is probably steeper than any of the X games. And it's not free, there is a monthly subscription.

It was a simple question, don't get so bent out of shape about it. Also, EVE Online is a great game, been playing it for ~4 years now, but it does lack some sort of interactivity with the combat that X3 has. Clicking all over the screen can be a bit boring some times, and it is good to change it up every now and again, hence why I bought X3:TC.

Again, I don't praise myself for being a brilliant mastermind of ideas as your sarcasm seemed to portray me. Quite the opposite, being NEW to this game, I was asking whether or not there was a definite reason why multiplayer does not exist.

Though I do appreciate your help in directing me towards the myriad of already open threads, they do answer most of my questions. As well as your effort in compiling such a list. Many people would have no patience for such things, and maybe that thread should be stickied so that any other newbs that happen across these forums can find ready answers to their questions on such an obviously popular(if heavily tried) topic.

So you're plotting your world domination in secrecy?
The element of surprise when you unveil your fiendish creation is certainly a bonus but it's harder to recruit minions in the early stages.

Minions are easy to come by in the current economic climate.

Mentioning mulitplayer, cockpits or planet landing is kind of a running joke here. It's usually followed by people saying 'No' in increasing large letters or a link to an index of related threads.

Don't take it personally.
Come watch me on Twitch where I occasionally play several of the X games

Closest you'll get to multiplayer is basically turn based save game sharing.
One person plays for a week, then passes the save on to the next person. Etc. Can be quite fun, tho you do have to have certain rules to make it work. Dont sell plot rewards, dont go crazy on building complexes, etc.

Cockpits.

Seriously though, welcome OP. At first I missed the multiplayer element because I've become accustomed to playing MMOs and always having buddies around. But it didn't take long to slip beck into single-player mode again and now find X3 almost therapeutic by comparison. There's something to be said for the solitude of the single player experience in deep space.

BTW -- cockpits.

I think one of the primary reason for no multiplayer in X3 is due to time accelaeration mechanics. Imagine for a moment pkaying X3 with no time accelaeration whatsoever. Talk about a super slow game! If you did try and implement time acceleration, how would that work if you wanted to accelerate time but the other participants do not? It would be a bit of a mess I think.

Nope, that's not a reason. Just have a look at the first question/answer in the first listed post in the X3 Multiplayer FAQ linked by Gazz above.

Not sure if EmperorJon (sp?) would agree.
Don't think he's used his Big Red Button for some time.

I see... This forum sounds fun. Oh well, back to my puny pitiful noob ship.

Far cry for sure from my massive carrier in EVE, but there is something nice about being able to fly with a joystick.

I thought Tsar of Cows was the man with the minions round these parts?

@Pyroflash Welcome, this is a very fun forum. Don't be shy to ask any question, no matter how dumb it may seem - we've all been there. But also check the stickies, they are a mine of info.
