What does the below mean in plain English??
ATI Stream Computing Support
With the release of ATI Catalyst 8.12 users can unlock the potential of accelerated applications enabling ATI Stream technology for millions of ATI Radeon™ graphics processors worldwide
• ATI Stream computing harnesses the tremendous processing power of the graphics processing unit (GPU) for high-performance, data-intensive computations over a wide range of scientific, business and consumer applications.
• ATI Stream technology enables the hundreds of parallel Stream cores inside AMD graphics processors to accelerate general purpose applications. These capabilities will allow ATI Stream-enabled programs, for a variety of different tasks and from a growing number of software vendors, to operate with optimized performance or with new functionality.

I think that only relates to 4000 series cards..
- I'm playing with Textures on High now - A/Ax8 and A/Fx16
- still a bit choppy in places, but looking absolutely superb..

Release notes say for the most of the cards, nothing that this is specific to the 4's

see here:
http://www.driverheaven.net/articles/ati%20stream/
- I seem to remember that 4x9800GTX's were crammed together
- for some body-imaging prog in Holland.. (or was it Belgium?)
- anyway, it's already been done at NVIDIA..

It's something like this: The GPU is ALOT more powerfull than a CPU, but it's more "specialized". The crappiest gpu on the market easily beats a high-end quad-core in terms of graphics computations, but until now it could only be used for graphics( read: games).
This stream computing thingy, basically allows "regular" apps to use the GPU as a cpu. But i think there are limits: an app must be specifically programed for this. I don't know ehter you need a 4xxx series card, but i doubt it'll work on an AGP card, since AGP is very slow in transmitting data from the GPU to the CPU.

It makes the ATi 4000 series cards fold alot better for F@H

Not to mention that they started bundling Folding@Home with the catalyst drivers now.

I'd go for the 8.10 hotfix from Sapphire's site
and then install their version of the 8.12 CCC over the top of that..
- according to Sapphire, it should work OK..
PS: there's also a generic AGP hotfix at AMD - can't vouch for that one though,
- I'm sticking with the recommended Sapphire version for now..
- any Sapphire HD3850 user tried the generic 8.12 AMD hotfix, yet..?
- I'm wondering if it's any better..
- blast these Catalysts - you're always waiting for the next one..!!
