No time for select committees personally. . . they're purely political sideshow, bunch of unqualified people asking stupid questions in an unprofessional manner with jeering from the rafters. The closest thing we have left to pelting with rotten fruit in the gallows! |
Aren't they modelled on the US system of hauling people to answer questions in front of congress for the spectacle of the public seeing their leaders be tough and taking action/being decisive...without actually being either.
I really hope that, at the end of all this, only those guilty are punished.
What I really wish to see is that the political parties are less intertwined with the media. Hopefully also the British public will be slightly more attuned to how to actually read the media too. There's a difference between reading the news, and believing the news verbatim. Even the impartial BBC can, if you read carefully, show some subtle (and not so subtle) bias...
Lastly, for all names being "I hope that xxx happens" - I just pray the police do their job well, rigorously and thoroughly - and that the right people are brought to justice.
Right now, due to the media way of reporting, I get the distinct impression a lot of people would happily say "yes, lock them up" without any trials - or even definite evidence being shown... Public in the hands of the media, again :/

Pretty much, IMO the British ones are even more farcical than the US version. . . the few US ones I've seen it does at least look like the Senators have done some research into the subject at hand before going in.

Heres an interesting article about the whole thing. Its a little anti-British, but I'm sure the poms here can ignore the insults long enough to comprehend the serious point, that we are all a little responsible for this.
Its the poms fault

Interesting slant there phil, Do you blame the people selling the product or those wanting it. Even though i agree with the sentiment would that also hold true for drug dealers or credit card lenders and such?
This story is starting to feel like the schoolyard bully has been bested and all the geeky kids are in his pockets getting their lunch money back.
I never really thought mordor(ch) had as much power as people put forward but i believe it now watching the actions of the US/UK politicians.

Thats the point though isn't it? We let some guy gain masses of power and didn't even realise we were doing it. All those anti Bush conspiracy theories etc and we possibly have people in the media doing all the conspiracy stuff without the hoards of nerds looking for it as they are busy poring through the US diplomatic cables.

I haven't been following this thread to closely. (Murdoch empire unethical? Immoral? No way, that's not possible!)
Just out of curiosity, I've got a question that you guys'll be able to answer for me. Was the News of the World a real newspaper? (A quick look at wiki, shows that you guys would call it a broadsheet.) Did they do serious stories or were they slanted more towards scandals?

You might say it was once, but it changed to suit the interests of the people who read it, and that stopped being real news a long time ago

Thanks, kinda what I thought. I'll just keep not being surprised then.

I think on the whole the main message of the article is entirely accurate. The only "issue" with the article is, as with all media, presenting a rather ... misleading, and indeed leading, representation.
e.g. Whilst the Sun's daily circulation is VASTLY greater than I ever imaged (7 mil per day - "O. M. G." as some would say), it does not infer acceptance by the general population regarding it's reporting style, or content, nor that by not buying it we still support, or encourage, the behaviour that said papers undertook.
Lines like "the ubiquity of page 3 stunnas" is tabloid journalism embodied in my opinion!
How many papers have topless page 3 girls? Just one now is it? (NOTW used to did it not?).
Certainly not the Guardian, nor the Telegraph... the Times, the FT, The Mail, The Express, The Observer, The Independent... I could go on, but point made?
Yes, his piece does indeed have a good point to make - but again - because the media does not focus (it has been pointed out in the media several times, actually) on it ad nauseum, it doesn't mean it hasn't been mentioned nor considered by the public either
This piece of "Yes Prime Minister" has always been a bit of a favourite, and if you watch it now you can hopefully appreciate what it implies by "who reads the Sun" and how it is directly relevant to the issue that article is highlighting, without actually clearly stating it further. The readers of those papers aren't interested in politics, nor world affairs (generally - or at least that is my opinion). That is why, when reporting, "stars" and "gossip" dominate, and when politics is mentioned, it is done in a way that is written to intentionally stir up over-reaction through misleading / misrepresentation. Give them an entirely unbiased and honest view, and they'll not give a monkeys arse (to put it bluntly). So, for me, his article is correct to point it out - but I feel he is pointing it to the tabloid audience A gentle irony...
Anyway, over to the brilliant Yes Prime Minister

p.s. NOTW / Sun are tabloids, not broadsheets.

LOL... All very well, but you haven't answered my question.
If you consider I am irreverent here, that is intent. - But one thing is never my intent, and that is to cause offence, although I do appreciate my 'humour' sends many a prudometer rattling.
When I was 20, I dated a woman with hair like that... Sarah McCormack, if you're listening, I'm available, and as awesome as ever.
