By the looks of things you didn't install the patch correctly, or didn't install the right one. At a guess you installed the 3.0->3.1 patch onto a game that wasn't previously 3.0. Try installing the 1.0->3.0 patch then the 3.0->3.1 patch.

oh well reinstalled x3, then installed patch 1.0 -> 3.0 then patch 3.0 -> 3.1
ran the game and got the same error message about the missing dvm.dll file.

Then I can only imagine that you're not installing it correctly. Make sure you install the patches to the same folder you installed the game. Also make sure that you install the game and the patches using an account with admin rights to the PC, and that you grant those same rights to the installation programs when asked.

My game works fine, running Windows 7 64-bit Pro. I found no 'dvm.dll' file anywhere on my computer. So I'm wondering what that file is supposed to do.

Have you checked for viruses? I googled the web and found a few loose associations with virii for that file but nothing specific.

Did you run the game before installing the patches? That can cause the copy protection system, which doesn't work in Win 7 and was disabled by a patch, to try to install itself. Perhaps that dvm.dll file is needed by the copy protection.
Have a great idea for the current or a future game? You can post it in the [L3+] Ideas forum.

X4 is a journey, not a destination. Have fun on your travels.

I think dvm.dll is part of Tages (actually Solidshield VM), but iirc most issues with it have been resolved by just re-patching in the correct order.
