I'd like to shoot you in the butt with a EBC gun, hide in the asteroids and laugh at what I done, put a blood blister upon each bun, I'd like to shoot you in the butt with a EBC gun.
Some people are like slinkies, not worth a whole lot, but they bring a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs.

This is probably not going to be helpful, but make sure that it is actually there first. Just today I flew up to Q and was puzzled by the fact that is was not moving or laying waste to the sector. I go up to it and fire at it and my lasers go right through. So I fly up to it and try to hit it, but I go right through, no damage. So what I did was got some screenshots of the inside of a Q.
I thought that the aran was fixed so I'm puzzled as to why you cant seem to capture it.
Do you have any mods?

You need to get out of your ship and use the repair laser on it
and it is there. repair laser is hitting it.
I do have mods but have never had issues with them and boarding the 'normal' ships.
apparently with the reading i have done, i'm missing 'board nearest ship' command. do i have to have a specific software? i think i have them all.....

Maybe they fixed the maybe-bug where the repair laser is considered a hostile act? The only time that would make any difference is trying to board an Aran, so I could see it going unnoticed for a while. If your M7M has a missile defence turret, that might work. If not .. can you aim flails manually?
The Aran only goes hostile when your repair laser hits a certain part. You need to strafe about over the hull shooting at bits until you hit the right one. (But I have to say that was a few patches ago and now may be wrong.)
If you only have low grade marines with you then I would suggest repairing it for about an hour before you try to board it. Put a weight of some description on your CTRL key and make sure you come back before the oxygen supply runs out in your suit.
Once you jump it out (you did bring ecells?) have it towed to it's final resting place.
Vayde

The trick is never use a missile it won't be able to target the Aran and you have to be a lot closer than you think to the Aran to hit it remember it is so big it's size can mislead you.
Then when the music starts you know you have got it keep repairing it for as long as possible then board it via the board nearest ship command.

The Aran is not hostile initially, and is not targetable.
You need to get it hostile, because piracy commands (to launch the marines) can only be applied to hostile ships.
People recommend the repair laser because the Aran starts with very low hull, and your marines will damage the hull even more in the process of boarding, so you don't want to do damage to it. But you could shoot it with lasers or with a combat drone.
Because you can't target it, you won't know when it goes hostile (you can't see the red target reticule), so your only option is to wait for the combat music to kick in as a hint.
At that point your marines should be able to launch; you should be able to initiate the Piracy command and choose "nearest ship - Aran" from the piracy menu.
Be aware that you still cannot target the Aran after it's hostile. Also, if you get Xenons and they attack you, and you shoot Flail Barrage or Hammer Heavy missiles at the Xenons, those missiles PICK NEW TARGETS once the first Xenon ship is destroyed, and they will pick the Aran. You will destroy your own Aran in the process of defending against Xenon attackers.
So make sure you first kill every Xenon in the sector.
Then time how long it takes for a new Xenon wave to appear and attack you.
Then kill these new Xenon and immediately do your boarding operation on the Aran (get it hostile and launch the marines). You only have the limited time you measured above. If you're in an M7M or any other ship that uses missiles that re-target, you can't use them to kill Xenons while the Aran is hostile.

It took me a little while to figure out the exact series of commands that would let my M7M properly begin a boarding operation (having Boarding Pods as your active missile and doing a missile barrage will send out Flails and a dead Aran).
When I finally found my Aran I got close and ejected and used the repair laser to make it hostile. I was focusing my laser on the end of one of the three bars that a capital ship can dock under (starboard side). To make sure I was in range I was looking for the telltale white puffs that I get when I'm repairing a ship and my laser is out of energy. If I'm too far I don't see those puffs at the no energy point.
Once it was hostile I got back in my M7M and selected the Other Commands->Launch All Marines... command. This opened a window giving me the option to select Nearest Enemy: Aran as well as another menu option to manually select from the sector map. Sent the marines on their way and then ejected again and kept repairing the hull while the marines did their work.
