Chapter 95: Mines and messes

Because nothing makes more of a mess than towing mines. Well, except maybe breaking things with Destroyers. Or Kha'ak invasion fleets. On the other hand, nothing is more boring, except perhaps waiting for a Teladi to come to a point. Because they never stop talking! Sheesh.

I mean, I don't mind listening when someone is enthusiastic about their work, but Teladi take things to extremes. It's like they just like to hear themselves talk. I suppose it's because they're the only one's.

Anyway, a few hours of towing sees a great many of the asteroids moved into position. Around the outer edges I'm being less precise with the placement because of a greater freedom of movement to them. After all, once they're out of immediate sight, it's not as vital that it look invisible.

Besides, since the complex will be fully self-sufficient, it's not necessary that it be viable for traders. I did modify the original plans, to include an SPP M, to increase the amount of available energy for fuel and other uses. This cuts the overage of crystals I'll have but 150 is still quite a comfortable margin, and that's not taking into account what I won't be using because of a standing overage of energy.

While all this is going on, Jump Boa has hauled the Falcon Hauler that was running Nividium from the Vulture Prospector to Decadence, to Weaver's Tempest to haul Energy and crystals to the Condor. It's armed now with 20 FAA, and so is protected against anything fighter or corvette class that might attempt to annoy it.

Okay, so after three days of annoyance, all the Ore, and Silicon Mines are completely connected. After that it's a fairly minor process to deploy the Solar Power Plants, Bofu and BoGas fabs, and Crystal Fabs. Then comes the equally boring, if less time consuming process of linking it all together into a single massive complex. It's designation becomes UW534 Energy.

At the same time, a second, smaller complex is erected, consisting of two Hammer Heavy Torpedo Fabs, and one Tomahawk Missile Fab. While at the moment it's unpowered, unsupplied, and disabled, I will later add both food and inbuilt fuel for the complex. This one is designated UW534 Missile, and will eventually include 5 of each fab type. (Flail/Hammer/Tomahawk) This means I'll only need to ship in Ore and Crystals to run it. With Ore and some surplus crystals available at the Weaver Energy core, I'll have easy access. Technically I'll need to add some more crystals to have enough, but I think an XL SPP will power the entire 15 stations easily. And three L BoFu/BoGas will provide enough food.

Jumping back to New Income, I catch wind of a military personnel transport in Herron's Nebula heading for Terracorp HQ in Home of Light. Swapping over to Hidden Blade, a Scabbard given during the Aldrin assault, I dock with Terracorp with time to spare. There's a Titan based in Elena's Fortune heading north to the Argon Shipyard. Were I at all interested in it, I could snap it up during it's return trip to Elena's when it heads through President's End.

Incidentally, the price of things such as the Singularity Slope Tension Converter and Singularity Projector have dropped significantly from last time I looked. A little over a million credits for the former, and a bit over 17 million for the latter. I might even consider using them to link Legend's Home to Barren Shores, if it weren't for the fact that it would tie up two of my Capitals to generate and maintain the link, and that it would require M1's for defense, since CODEA can launch and fight even when the carrier itself is unable to move because it's busy. That said, I think the SSTC's are the better deal. They only work with Hyper jump, but for the cost and the efficiency of them, they're truly fantastic.

For now, I'm going to continue tracking down rumors of a boarding transporter device, and then see if I can put my hands on another Minotaur. I hope I'll find one not stuck in the middle of a massively military sector. Possibly if I make a mess, I'll get one running through the pirate sectors. Perhaps if I go on a rampage through the south east sectors, the pirates will jump up and be an Argon problem. That should prompt some military action.

Or end up with my head shot off. Either way, it should be fun.

First thing is first though, and I jump to Argon M148 chasing a military Transport. This turns out to be a mistake as I not only miss the transport, but give F'juny F'kr the impression that I actually care about his mission.

It turns out to be a Kha'ak attack replete with three Corvettes and a dozen or so fighters. Unsuspected, the Condor, and Rapscallion all jump into assist. Sadly, I lose two Pikes, one to enemy action, it apparently got trapped in the firing line of Kha'ak fighter, and couldn't shake it in time. The other... well, let's say that friendly fire isn't and let it go at that. Honestly though, I sort of ran it over. Not on purpose at least.

I do manage to snap up a cheap Centaur for a bit over 2 million credits. Sadly, I've over done it on the Salvage insurance and I'm down to mere 5 million credits. Fortunately, my Avarice plexes are keeping me out of the red, for the moment anyway. I don't know how long that can last though. I'm thinking I'll need to sell some assets. Preferably assets that don't belong to me.

Hmm... while there's a remarkable tonnage of military assets hanging around in the universe, they seem generally in bad places to snatch. There's a pair Krakens in Three Worlds and Cloudbase Northwest. Neither of those are really good sectors to go pirating, because they're Boron in Argon sectors, and only a couple of sectors from some SERIOUS reinforcements. Namely KE north and AP south. So kind of the worst possible place to go ship jacking. Except for perhaps in AP under the nose of Argon One. Not that I feel Ban Danna is capable of doing more than annoying me.

So... the question becomes, what can I steal and from who? Well, well, well, it seems the Argon are Johnny on the spot replacing the Minotaur in M148. Checking back in to see how Unsuspected Gains is doing, it's CSV's having finished collecting the debris from the fight, I see that a new Minotaur has appeared, watching it just leaving the shipyard. Wonder if it's got an escort? That could prove interesting.

Anyway, dropping into the Omicron Lyrae EQD, I pick up a bunch of Technicians, Scientists and Gunners. Lots, and lots of gunners. And a couple of marines. Gotta get them registered properly with a TP. So far marines like that have proven themselves very capable. I think I might swap them out for the two numpties on Gunboat Diplomacy. Speaking of Numpties, the two aboard the Centaur I snatched up, are really bad. They're both No-Star, and one only has a single star in fighting. I think they'd be best served as BAIT.

Or perhaps as a first wave against a Xenon capital. I wonder how much those K's go for? Hmm... The only problem is that you almost never see them outside of Xenon Sectors, and frankly I'm not in the mood to go hunting in Xenon sectors. Not for anything which I'm going to have to try and capture anyway.

I think I'll have a look at the new Minotaur in M148. Perhaps I'll take it off their hands. Shouldn't be hard with Venomous Cobra. It'll be a piece of cake.

Sure it will. Of course, I'll have to have a name for it:

Operation: Bull by the Horns.

Of course if it's got any of those nasty bits, or is heavily armed, it could be tricky. Or indeed Coulds be Messy. I'll have to jump in and find out. Presuming of course that I don't take a Tiger upside the head. That would hurt, like a lot. First I'm going to swap from Rapscallion to something a bit sleeker. Probably back to my Personal TS. I'm not going in with that obviously, but at the same time, I don't want to go back to the Military Base there, in case the stupid Split General thinks I'm back for more punishment.

Chapter 96: Minotaurs, Missile Barrages, and great ideas.

So the first thing I do is start issuing some orders. First, Amazon gets transferred back to Jump Boa's Hangar Bay, then Jump Boa is sent to Hyper Jump near Terracorp, and then dock. Personal TS gets the same order, minus the Hangar thing. Because it doesn't have one, natch.

I admit being tempted by the Argon Casino in Home of Light, but given the general asteroidiness of the sector, combined with the presence of several Cerberus, I decide against it. Plus it's got Internal Sentry Lasers. Always unpleasant.

So instead I dock, do the paper work on my marines and find that while they're not master marines, they are quite capable. I'm going to have Hidden Blade dock at the local marine training facility and get them enrolled in some training classes. They're both 4 star fighters, and thus good candidates to spend money on.

Jumping with Jump Boa into M148, I send Unsuspected on it's way and head towards the center of the sector. I arrive just in time to see the local Python annihilate the local Colossus. It leaves salvage and then heads away. I drop in Great Hold, because the Python has other things on it's... agenda, and doesn't bother it. Then I see the Minotaur. It's undershielded with only 2.2GJ and unarmed. I decide this is the best chance I'll have. Doesn't matter that it's escorted. The Cobra is sufficiently faster that I'll be out of range of anything it can do to me. Thus commences:

Operation: Bull by the Horns

I decide to launch just seven Hammers, because 8 is too many, so 7 should be just right. Fortunately, I'm lucky enough to have the Minotaur make a starboard turn to make my Hammer's spread out across it's broad side. That means that my next three Flails drop it perfectly to 4% and that the next three arriving with the pods keep it down long enough for them to impact and two more keep them down for the troops to get aboard.

They take it with only 11% damage, and then it jumps north to Omicron Lyrae. It'll have to hang out there until I get some shields, but I'm thinking it'll make an amazing station buster.

I suspect this makes you believe I'm a master of cappage. In fact, this is one lucky break. It almost never goes this smooth.

With no pressing engagements at the moment, mostly killing time until A) I have enough hammers to put some use to the Minotaur, probably breaking it in by breaking up Duke's HQ, or B) I have to supply something else to the HUB. He's said he'll need some Ore after the Teladianium but with UW534 producing 10,553 units an hour, it'll take a little less than two days to complete the order. Give or take a bit. Transporting it, now that's an entirely different story. Even with the two Great Haulers, it's not going to be easy. I rather think I need to go make friends with the Terrans so I can tick them off even more. Kind of odd to think about it.

Alternately, I think perhaps stealing some Paranid TL's and using them to move the Ore will work better. I'll only have to jump them out of the Paranid Sectors to UW534. Then they can store the Ore there, and be disposed of when I'm done. Unfortunately, unless I'm calculating it wrong, I need 90 Hercules to store it.

Or a mere 30 fully upgraded Aran's.

Bloody Fish. At least it's not hard to get. I think I'm going to increase the output capacity of the Teladianium Hub in the Hub, and go with 20 stations producing it. Yes, I'll have to jack another M2 to pay for it, but that means I'll just have to go locate a Paranid one. Not a problem boss. Minor problem with the complex. It says I'll need an XL SPP to run it. Of course, then I need crystals I don't have... Fah. I'll pull excess energy off of Weavers, and UW534, because I don't need it that much longer. And I think I'll only go to 15 foundries, rather than 20. That'll be enough to finish the plot, and perhaps I'll use it as target practice later.

Or I might set the ship hauling Teladianium to the Hub to a CAG, and have it sell Teladianium anywhere it can. Good idea, if I can find a market for it. If not? Fire at will.

Well, only one thing to do. Head off to see if I can find something to steal worth the effort, and that will bring in the right amount of money. A Ray in Lucky Planets looks good, but turns out to be a bad target, with Hull Polarization, and Internal Sentry Lasers. The Supply Orca looks better, but calculations show it's not high enough profit. Yes, Technically it's only a million credits and change, but I'm not interested in such minor profits.

A quick scout shows that there's a Brigantine in Duke's again. The local Zeus is also back though. I'm thinking I might try and snap up that instead. I don't really like taking Carriers, but the Pirates are generally friendly. (Wonders what weed/booze will do for you.)

As I'm approaching the gate out of Dukes, I see three things. One is the unmistakable silhouette of two Carracks hanging around the Brigantine. If I didn't want to leave it alone before, I sure do now. Second is the Zeus, and it's accompaniment of several Nemesis and a dozen escort fighters.

Third, a report that comes across the screen of a Boron Kraken Navigating Nopileos Memorial. It's heading it seems for Haktikvah's and then on to Faded Dreams. That means three chances to snap it up. The first in Haktikvah's, the second when it crosses the pirate sectors between Perdition's End and Priest Refuge, and the third while it's in Patriarch's Conclusion and Contorted Dominion. I'm going to sidle up and scan it. Depending on it's hardware load out, I might wait for it to reach Contorted, so it expends ordinance fighting off pirates. Of course, if it's not, or lightly armed, I'll snap it up as it hits Haktikvah's.

Incidentally, I'm keeping my eyes peeled for a Split Heavy Dragon. I've taken a shine to mine, which I've taken to calling the Wyvern.

I decide to snap up the Kraken where it's at in Nopileos, and it doesn't go quite as well as the Minotaur, since it's on the ball enough to shoot down my Hammers. Sort of. I fire 8, and it hits one. The blast takes out the remainder of the flails, and the slight delay to allow for just that causes the rest to impact perfectly. I do end up with a touch of hull damage though, because one of it's own fighters BBQ'd it trying to hit me. Fortunately it's not too bad, and the boys reach the core with 64% hull remaining. Once they hit the core though, it's all over. 64% isn't perfect, but it's much better than nothing, and it's got a Jumpdrive on it.

Sending it north to Ceo's Sprite, I start looking for more targets. There's a Gannet heading south out of Thuruk's Beard, into Haktikvah's Faith.

You know, I really wish there were an easier way to get boarding pods. Even with ships farming them, I tend to run out of them way too fast. Perhaps I can special order a boarding pod production facility? I'll have to check my Teladi contacts. Providing they'll still talk to me after this next stunt. The Gannet is heading to Merchant Haven Military Outpost from Ceo's Sprite. My job is to do my best work at ensuring it NEVER reaches it's destination.

Initial boarding doesn't go so well, as one of the pods suffers premature detonation, dumping two marines into space. Two others aboard die in vacuum. It's a horrible way to go, but that's one of the hazards they sign up for. Sadly that's not the worst of it, because once on board, they lose another five. 7 marines, particularly these who are quite well trained, is not a good thing in any circumstances, and I'm not at all sure that it was worth it.

The Kraken nets 22 million credits even as banged up as it was, and the Gannet is in better shape. To show that I'm willing to risk myself as well, I slip into the Wyvern and run south, tagging three Paranid ships on my way to peel a Paranid Military Supply Transport open. Sadly the goodies total one Aurora and one 25MJ shield when he bails. So it's not an expensive haul, but it feels good to do some honest to goodness, or perhaps that should be honest to evilness, piracy.

I suppose I should try to get back to the good graces of the various races (excluding the Paranid naturally) and see what I can do about not having more than one group sending kill squads after me.

Right after I teach Duke a Lesson in manners.

Sorry I've been quiet. My computer has been giving me fits as I try to finish the next chapter, and frankly, I'm thinking I might have to reinstall. It's not really hard, just kind of time consuming. But between that, college and other distractions, it's just taking a little longer than I anticipated.

That said, we're almost done with book one. I'm going to take a break from A Pirates Revenge for something special, and then I'll be back with book two. Don't worry, it'll be worth the wait. Promise.

Trying my best, I got the big one to listen. File corruption in one of the mods. But then I succeeded in spilling soup on the laptop keyboard, which busted it and I haven't got the on hand cash to replace it right away, so it's slow going with a USB keyboard. I'm still working hard on it though, I promise.

All hail, the long awaited Chapter 97!

---

Chapter 97: The Drakhar School of Manners

And yes ladies and gentlemen, my school is OLD SCHOOL. Meaning none of this wussy little Missile Frigate business. I'm going to get down and dirty with Rapscallion and bust up Duke's place. Why? Not out of any real need you know, but nothing at all like punching great big holes in things to make friends.

Yes, I know that sounds insane, but apparently Duke isn't friends with anyone who can't show him the strength to bust his chops. Well, we here at the Drakhar School of Manners are more than happy to get him learned in the error of his ways.

And since we can't dock to beat his face in, we'll just blow his space station up. Since I'm pretty sure he doesn't think too much of that idea, I'm going to do it the easy way. I'm going to point jump past his gate defenses, and have Viper Strike hanging on standby at Patriarch's Conclusion shipyard, ready to bring a Conclusion to any of Duke's forces that try to interfere. Then I'll destroy his HQ, collect any goodies floating around, and jump back to civilization. Or at least as civil as it ever gets around here.

Of course, that plan is like many of them. Completely and easily blown out of the water by any passing fancy. In this case it's the awesomeness of piracy. I've kind of missed the one on one, your ship or your cargo, and probably, no definitely also your life, of stalking, hunting and taking ships. Haktikvah is currently host to a number of Paranid cargo freighters and Military supply transporters. Being a big fish, and the premiere shark in the area, I think I'll relieve a few of their ships, and lives and cargo. After all, any Paranid I pillage, plunder and slaughter now, is that many less supporting their military might. Besides, I do have a military complex to fund, and all these donations are just waiting for me to claim them. I'm going to do two things. First I'm going to jump in Great Hold, and second I'm going to spend some money to buy it several more Cargo Salvage Vessels, 5 Falcon Haulers should be more than enough to pick up whatever I cause to spill into space.

While I'm waiting for that to happen, I'm busily working out what to do with my plans to knock out the Paranid. With the Hammer/Hawk Plex in UW534 now ready to come online since I have enough excess food/energy in the main one, I'm going to fire it over with a CLS ship, set to take a total of 3% of the output of the main complex. I've got some overage there of most things, though I need another BoFu fab. Sending Great Hold to Queens Retribution for another BoFu fab, I get on with some good old piracy. It's nice to see that I still have the talent for it. A Military Supply Transporter bails, and leaves me a pleasant surprise. A single Flail missile. It's not really that valuable considering I'm producing eighteen an hour now, but still, any additional firepower is appreciated. Particularly since I've now got a third M7M to arm and repair.

Wow. Who'd have thought that I'd have three M7M's when I started all that time ago, back in that little cloning facility on Argon Prime. And even more, I have a fleet. Three destroyers, three carriers. Three M7's, three M7M's...

Those are horribly Paranid numbers now that I think about it. I see it now... All the power of the light is bending toward me. All the unholy light of the Paranid are turning onto me. And their strength shall be mine, and I shall destroy them. None shall challenge, and none shall stand against me when I enter their systems for destruction. They shall fall, and I will turn their holy number against them. All Paranidia shall fall to my infinitely destructive might!! And out shall they put their eyes, that they shall never look upon their fouled digit again!

You know, because I'm going to use it against them. I think that I'll toss some planet glassing power at Paranid Prime. I think 20,000 Hammer Heavy Torpedoes should turn the trick? 100,000 Units of storage isn't exactly easy to achieve. Hmm... requires an additional 11 Gannets... Not quite, because I've got a Minotaur and Cobra, which together will cut a bit out of it. So... 9 say? At 50million factory price? 450 million credits is 9 destroyers. Hell, it'd be easier to just steal the...

Ooh, Pirate. Heh. Of course, that's really going to make the Teladi unhappy. On the other hand, if I jack a couple of Paranid Destroyers, (not as easy as it sounds. The funny saucer look gives them a nasty profile for putting pods onto) I can afford to super size the weed east complex and that should provide enough additional rep to keep them from getting too mad.

Of course, first I'm jumping to Light of Heart for some fuel, and then south to Patriarch's Conclusion to snap up the Rapscallion. Then I'm going to go give Duke a nice sharp talking to. Or rather I'm going to shove my IBL's up his nostril and pull the trigger.

The Brigantine is quite the ship, and it's capable of dispensing a not easily shrugged off volume of fire. And yes, that's actually a mix of PPC and IBL, I picked up a couple of PPC at one of the various EQD in the universe, and traded them out for a couple IBL.

Feeling in a destructive mood, I jump to Trinity Sanctum and plow through the Shipyard with ease. It seems word is spreading of my exploits though. The local Zeus turns and runs through the East Gate. That's fine. I've got another target in mind. An undefended Arena. Sadly, before I can bring Venomous Cobra into the sector, since all the marines are waiting aboard Gunboat Diplomacy in New Income, the Zeus returns, and this time it's looking for my head. The Arena goes up in a hail of cross fire from my IBL's and gouts of fire from the escorting fighters off the Zeus. It's not long before it's a right old furball and all I can do is sit and watch the fire.

Well, I'm a little more active than that, swinging to the side to avoid a collision, and then jumping out to avoid the majority of the 36 fighters launched from the Zeus. Even for a well shielded destroyer, it's hard to shrug off that much fire, and for all it's good qualities, the Brigantine is a bit light on shielding.

Dropping to Barren Shores, I stop and begin flipping through the Property menu. I've got 3 carriers. Only the Unsuspected is fully combat ready, and even then it's not quite because I'm mounting all of it's IBL's on Rapscallion. Yes, it'll also mount PPC's, but it's not very good with them.

I need some more heavy weapons. And I really need quite a few of them. Sadly, the cycle times are monstrously long for most capital class weapons. My preferred mountings would actually be dual mounts of Gauss Cannons and Ion Cannons. Ion's for breaking down the shields and then GC's to knock out the hull. The thing is, that in building Gauss Cannons, I'll also have to build an Ammo forge. While they don't use a lot in small numbers, when you intend to mount 12 to each of 3 warships, you will run through quite a bit of ammo. And that's not considering that I'll be mounting some on the Raptor I intend to steal eventually.

Just at the moment though, my eye is caught by a Ray running through Patriarch's Conclusion to Faded Dreams. Pat's is a bit of a tight sector for any sort of capture operations, but Contorted Dominion on the other hand, is just perfect. The Ray has a massive escort though, which means I'm going to need a plan, and Gunboat Diplomacy to take it on. Opening the can and getting the marines in is a piece of cake. I can dump three barrages into it without hurting it. In fact, I'm going to shove a barrage of Tomahawk's up it's nose, and then use Hammers and Flails to finish dropping the shields. The escort is a concern, but not a truly large one. First I'm going to dump several Flails into the groups, which should be enough to deal with the majority of the fighters, and I'll have them armed while I'm working on the shields.

I'll leave Venomous Cobra to keep watch in case the IZ Albatross makes a move. But for the moment, I'm going hunting. It takes more than a hundred flails, 8 Tomahawks, and 8 Hammers to get the shields down where the system would launch, mostly because the angle was wrong on the initial Tomahawk launch, and so t hey came in from the side and got knocked out by some astute flak gunnery.

A couple of the Hammers also got smoked because they were shooting at the screening Flails. No marine casualties though, so I'm happy.. What I'm truly ecstatic, and impressed with however, is the thirty-two Incendiary Bomb Launchers in the hold. It's even got two Hornet Missiles, and a bit over 600 energy cells. No shields, and sadly no jump drive, but that's fine. I'm going to send for Command, which is now rocking an SSTC, to jump in, pick it up, and then it'll jump to Pat's Conclusion to sell it, after taking the IBL's and other equipment off. While I'm waiting, I'll slide in and collect my Marines from it. Quite the stars these guys, and gals and Teladi.

I wonder if there might be some promotions in their futures? Either way, this is enough IBL's to rearm Unsuspected, and mostly rearm the Phoenix. In fact, there's enough here to arm a second Galleon if I had one. I'd have to go hunt one down and... oooh.... a Cobra. It's a ways off, and over near the West Gate, but it's not showing on sensors even though I can see the gate on the map. Odd.

Well, I'll have a look just as soon as I see my prize safely away. And no, I did NOT consider keeping the Ray. I had a look from the bridge of the last one, and the weird blue-green tint of the Transporter putting me aboard made me nauseous, not to mention the odd smell. Boron ships, when crewed exclusively by Boron, are filled with water. I gather that it's easier to absorb shock from weapon impacts that way, though I might be a bit suspicious of a medium that could either freeze, or boil. Annoying. Though I suppose at that point oxygen isn't much better.

Anyway, moving the IBL's to the DW/H, after a slight change of plans, I send it to Light of Heart, and then jump myself to Omicron Lyrae. I'm going to make a mess, and I'm going to use Unsuspected Gains to do it. Selling the Gannet captured earlier, finally, and the Ray nets me a nice nest egg, which goes to repair Shriking Banshee, and the Cerberus Guard Dog. As soon as I put together the weapons I need to arm it, the FAA, and CIG's for the mains, I'll slide it into Barren Shores, and see if that can't manage to keep the peace. The two TM's, BS Defender 1&2 didn't seem to do the trick, and I think I'm going to have to pick up another couple of fighters. That said, with the Cerberus ability to carry six ships, it's a perfect recon ship, since that's the maximum number in a recon wing. Plus it'll give me a way to see enemies coming that doesn't rely on annoyingly defenseless Navigation and Advanced Navigation Sats. I only can think of two places I'd want them though. One in Getsu Fune, since it's Argon Controlled Space, meaning I won't get into trouble for destroying Paranid, and in Akeela's Beacon, so I can station the Colossus there to keep the Paranid down, and get the CLS ships flying again.

But that will be for another day. For now, I'm going to sleep, and dreaming of the death, destruction, and violence to come. And I'm going to set up the Commodity Logistics Systems in the morning to get the Hammer/Tomahawk plant in UW534 up and running.

Chapter 98: Auditing, Arranging, and General Maintenance.

I've been more or less ignoring the individual day to day maintenance of running a pirate empire and frankly, it's starting to catch up with me. I've got ships going places and doing things that I don't recall them doing. I don't even know why I've done some of it, and I have a couple that aren't doing anything, that I think should be doing something, but I can't for the life of me recall what. So I have to go through the list, and check the CLS ships to make sure they're doing something useful, and something they should be. If they aren't doing something useful, I'm going to reset them to doing something useful. If I can't, I'll have the pilots pulled, and move them into a TP so I can reassign them later. Probably to Mistrals, or Mistral SF's, depending on what they're supposed to be doing,

I think that while it might be expensive, standardizing the fleet will simplify operations, and allow me to get everything moving in a more uniform direction and condition. I think I'll use mostly Mistral SF's with basic Mistrals as master fuel tenders. Why? Because CLS pilots tend to be very job focused, and not smart enough to refuel on their own. So having ships who's only job is to refuel them, is very useful indeed. Plus I'll be able to control who's getting fuel, how much, and from where.

Great Hold is doing a pretty good job, but Great Trunk is finding itself needing more fuel than is being provided to Great Hold. So I'll set three Mistral SF's and two Mistrals to bringing it fuel from widely separated points. Power Circle, UW534, Weaver's Tempest, and probably Light Water.

That'll help keep everything from running out of gas, and mean I don't have to sit and twiddle my thumbs while I wait for deliveries of fuel. Good thing.

Okay, so diving into the paperwork I go. Alright, mostly there's only a couple of CLS ships, which need either tender loving care, or a swift kick in the ass. I'm going to send the Colossus up from Patriarch's Conclusion up to Lucky Planets to collect the old Discos that were acting as haulers for Greater Hold, and get them set up as recon. I know, I'm going to need guns for them, because I didn't arm them, and CODEA demands guns, even on ships that should never be using them.

At the same time, Lieutenant Gil Gusta, captain to be of the Guard Dog, is currently on a Personnel Transport, heading to Senator's Badlands to oversee the fitting of the weapons to his new ship, and then we'll have a party in his honor. I'll even let him blow up some Paranid to cap the day. Then his job will be to babysit the Barren Shores microchip complex. He's been warned that if something happens to it, he'd better go down with his ship first. Of course, since it is Boron space, he's been ordered to ignore anything that doesn't shoot first. If it does, his key phrase is 'Overwhelming Firepower'.

And he's to call for assistance if anything bigger than an M6 comes his way. I've got Knight's Lance back up to full power, and Weaver's Supply is now delivering it's IBL's to Delivery Wagon/Hub. In any case, if Gil calls for back up, Knight's Lance and Rapscallion will both point jump in to render assistance. And I'll come running.

For now though, that's a bit off. First I've got to locate the store of CIG's I put away somewhere. I know they're around, but I'm completely unsure where they went... wait... Weaver's... Ah. I know where they are. They're in the two designated storage ships I used when I stripped out the TL's to construct the Weaver's Complex. Which means a jump to Cloudbase South East. I'm going to have Mos Eisley jump to Senator's Badlands ahead of him, with a fighter carrying all the necessary software, in particular, the Navigation software to allow for a Hyperjump, because the shipyard is so bloody far from the gates. You know, that might make sense if they were preparing for an attack, but CBSE is possibly the safest sector in the known universe.

It was however a very weird day. How do I know this? Because while I'm sitting in the Hub, which, all things told is a very safe sector, I see the OTAS Boreas from Legend's Home head north on into Akeela's Beacon, and then into Aladna Hill. When it gets there, it takes up the patrol from the local Boreas, and the old on then heads back through towards Legend's Home. This is kind of insane. I mean, not only is it leaving Legend's Home undefended, with the exception of an Argon Colossus, but that's hardly a discouragement to a seasoned Pirate. Enough to dissuade me naturally, but that's mainly because there's nothing there I want, but not only does it have the Boreas in Aladna Hill now, but so are the two Escort Aquilo. And those are tempting targets. If my guess is right, that one has been called up because the one in Aladna Hill has been damaged, possibly by Mass Drivers, and it's heading down to LH to get repaired. Which means that the Boreas from LH will be returning back south. Which means I could potentially ambush one of them, and send it off to Zyarth's Dominion for sale.

Wouldn't really do anything good to my reputation with the Argon, but I can absorb one more hit. And then I'll sell it and do some rep building missions for the Argon, Boron and Teladi. Split too. Of course, if I can manage to find some Paranid ships traversing Argon space, I'll be happy to jack them. Or blow them up, if it's too much trouble to take them. In fact, I don't think I'm going to do any Argon missions. I'm just going to jump into Argon space, and make a big nasty mess of any Paranid ships I see. I could do the same with Boron ships in Split space, but that might be a little hard on the reputation, and I'll have a hard enough time repairing Boron Rep without the decrease.

Oh well, at least the Paranid are useful for one thing. Dying. In droves. First a quick stop in Light of Heart to rearm Unsuspected from the stores now aboard DW/H, and I'm off to Argon Prime and the surrounds, spoiling for a fight.

So spoiling in fact, that I've decided to call in Wyvern and use Unsuspected as back up to sweep fighters I can't kill. I do need to call up some replacements from Depths of Silence, because there's several fighters in the condition of dead and or MIA. It's got 17 of it's full compliment aboard, and frankly, that's not enough. Actually I think the number is 16 because one of them belongs to Decadence, but I'll have to sort through and find out which one, and then send it up to UW534 where Decadence is still being loaded with Nividium. I'd rather avoid entering sectors with active mining operations, given the occasional tendency for them to crash head first into asteroids.

So I'll send one of the non-commanding ships in to deliver the ship to it's rightful home. Presuming of course it does belong to Decadence. If not, I'll just reset it as part of Unsuspected's CODEA wings.

I'll send... damn, I don't have a free ship with the capacity to bring up the entire group of fighters up out of Depths of Silence, and I'd rather not send in Unsuspected with an active CODEA command group. Unless I send Jump Boa, Replen, and possibly Commodore's CLS down to pick them up. Wait a minute, how stupid am I. I have a ship with the capacity for that.

Scavenger's Lair has 35 open hangar bays, and not a single fighter in them. It's also fully shielded, and packing a fighter smashing load out of 20 FAA. It's the single most well defended ship I have at the moment. Of course, anything bigger than an M6 has nothing to fear, but if my M1 is engaging anything bigger than fighters, or bombers, I'm doing something wrong.

So I'll send Scavenger's Lair there, and have it bring the reinforcements to me in Light of Heart. Makes me feel just a bit stupid. Incidentally, it seems one of the two Orbital weapons platforms in the Hub has moved itself out of position. Given that they can't actually move, I have to suspect that someone was hired to push it out of place to allow the Paranid to get through. So on the list of chores, is to bring Commodore's Yacht down from UW534, and tow the OWP back into position.

Incidentally, I've been considering how I should get the Ore from UW534 without burning hundreds of thousands of units of Jumpfuel and without a massive fleet of TL's. And I think I've finally found it. I'm going to mount a Singularity Projector on DW/H, and one on Great Hold. I'll set up Great Hold in Getsu Fune with it's Falcon Hauler compliment set up as CODEA Interceptors, and have it sit well off the center of the Sector. DW/H on the other hand will sit in Akeela's Beacon and be not far from the south Gate, with Scavenger's Lair and all the various ships I have that I can stuff onto the latter, protecting it, and use the two TL's as a bridge. By bridging to Getsu Fune, rather than directly to UW534, I preserve the security of UW534, and at the same time shorten what would be a several hundred energy trip into something that takes perhaps 60 energy each way. So having them refuel at both ends, once at the Hub, and once in Weavers, will mean that they're not going to run dry at either end. The problem is that it means I'll have to have a pair of Mistrals picking energy up and dropping it at the Hub to ensure there's enough there for them. No point in going to all the trouble of shorting the jump then having them jump through the gate, and run through the bloody Xenon Sector. And I'm absolutely not going to the necessary effort of locking down an entire active Xenon sector just for glorified delivery drivers. Now, if I were convoying down with TL's, that'd be something entirely different. I'd set up a daisy chain of ships, and use Rapscallion, Great Wyrm, Gunboat Diplomacy, and Unsuspected to hold the line while the TL's went through. Since it's not, there's not really a lot of point.

Of course, an alternate plan would be the Getsu><Akeela's connection, and then a separate Getsu><UW534 connection. Since it'd still be a dead-end, there wouldn't be any ships that would want to traverse it, and thus no security risk, but I don't think I'm going to chance it. I will however be using Great Hauler 1, and Great Hauler 2 to move several huge shipments down from Akeela's. Of course, with a mere 45, I could ship it all at once. Or with an easily obtained 240 Mistral SF's. Neither of these options would allow for jump fuel though. But ten trips with 12 Mistral SF's is all I need... Hey.

I've got a bloody massive carrier that I can.... Sweet. I can move the entire shipment in a single load. It's very simple. First, I need to upgrade CnC's cargo storage capacity to maximum. That's expensive. I'm not sure, but I think I'll have to steal another capital ship to do it. Then I need 30 Mistral SF's and one of the Great Haulers. That's enough cargo space, to hold the entire load of Ore. Then I'll use the Great Hauler with a Logistician to unload Ore, and two more in MSF's to unload the Ore from CNC to the Great Hauler. Beautiful and Simple. Of course, I'm going to have to start work on it quickly, for two reasons. First, it takes a while to mine all that Ore, and second, because it'll take a while for me to put together the cash for 30 MSF's. That said, when it's over, I'll have enough ships to upgrade most of my CLS pilots.

The best laid plans of mice and men however. An attack warning from Barren Shores both sends me running down that way and reminds me why I need to get Guard Dog up and running as quickly as possible. Three Pirate Elites decided to break my chip plex, and one of them was armed with Mass Drivers. I seriously object to that sort of conduct, and my Pikes made that abundantly clear. Thus I need to put Guard Dog into business as fast as I can. Mean time though, I send three damaged, and unrepaired ships to the Chip Plex to pull it's stock while I'm here. With the loss of the Peregrine I was using, it's now obvious I need to put a personal request in when I need arming. Ore works fine, but chips are too valuable to trust to a CLS pilot. Which is annoying, but sometimes that's what has to be.

I'm going to set up yet another chip complex, this time in UW534. I'll build it to only use crystals, but that should keep me from having another incident since I can station a TL nearby to safely retrieve them without worrying about it traversing pirate sectors, nor extra secdef to keep the Paranid out. Of course at the moment it's a little ways in the future. For now, I'm concentrating on getting Guard Dog up and running. I'm going to jump to Senator's Badlands and meet up with Hidden Blade, Guard Dog, and Scavenger's Lair. Why? Because SL has my extra Pikes, and several spare FAA, and I want to ensure that Captain Gusta understands his orders. CLEARLY. On the other hand, I discover a minor problem with the Pikes I acquired and the second 10 I ordered while Scavenger's Lair was there and the L variants were available. Despite my orders, they were NOT equipped with Navigation Mk1 software. Some sort of Paperwork issue it seems, so I jump to Cloudbase South East to correct the issue. Once there, I pick up a Build Mission for a Boron Dragonfly Missile Fabrication Facility, and I order Great Hold to jump to Queen's Retribution to pick it up, since it's the only TL not currently preoccupied with something else. Jumping myself from CBSE to the destination in Home of Light works fine, and so does the placement of the station. The annoyance comes when I get ready to leave. First, Great Hold doesn't have the energy to leave the system. Fine. Then while I'm waiting for Great Trunk, because I've decided not to leave my vulnerable TL sitting out in open space if I can help it, I get a fighter launch. There's a Paranid Freight Transporter which has entered the north gate. This is a bad move, because a pair of Pikes and a Barracuda make short work of it. As they're returning another Paranid comes through the West gate. His day is worse, because without a second M3 as a wing leader the CODEA system sends four Pikes. They make short work of the M3. It's a beautiful sight. After setting Captain Gusta up in Guard Dog, giving him a Cargo Bay Life Support system, two Ensigns from Unsuspected, and two Pikes. Setting them as Interceptors means they won't go running off and get dead because they were out of the protective umbrella offered by Guard Dog's guns.

Sending it to Argon Prime for some software, it won't be long before it's in Barren Shores protecting my Chip Complex. However, this would indeed leave Legend's Home undefended. Yes, I know it has it's own defenses, though the OTAS Boreas is now on it's way back down through Akeela's and should be passing through the HUB soon. No, I don't trust them not to fail miserably should something come into the system, such as a Kka'ak attack, or a cluster. So Captain Flot Cheram is now on patrol in Legend's Home flying her Crown Vidar, under the name Legend's Guardian. Legend's Defender, Gil Gusta's old ship is now flying along as back up. Or rather it should be, but the first thing Flot did was decide to head for the shipyard to bang out the dents left after the boarding procedure.

One of the reasons she's not allowed to have marines on board is because of her continued beratement of them for the condition the ship is in. And yes, while some might question the wisdom of someone who seems to be slightly mentally unstable, I point out, continuously, that that's fine. We're pirates first of all, so clean mental health is kind of far down the list of hiring requirements. Down past things like: How do you feel about piracy? How about committing High Crimes against evil three-eyed aggressors?

What's your favorite color of blood? (The answer to that is always whatever comes out of the other guy.) So sanity tends to be kind of low on the list of things I look for. Though, I rarely consider complete lunatics. It's just bad for business. Hard to get people to trust you if they think you're going to suddenly lose it and chop their heads off, or open fire with a pulse rifle.

So I tend to avoid those people. On the other hand, particularly amongst fighter pilots, a certain amount of aggression is not only good, but frankly it's required. I tend to prefer the sort of head-on tenacious fighter pilot who has the balls to try and take on an M2 in an M4. All sorts of promotion opportunities are open for those with the balls to try it, and usually given to those that survive. Fortunately there's not really been a lot of promotion congestion for that sort of thing.

At the same time, I like brave Cargo Pilots, but not aggressive ones. It's one of the reasons I don't have any Split CLS pilots. They're just too twitchy. And they can't seem to remember that just because a Caiman Hauler has guns does not mean it's a fighter. Nor that having twice the shields of an M3 does not make them a match for it in a Mistral. At least not without use of large numbers of missiles which they shouldn't really have. So I'll stick to mainly Argon pilots.

Anyway, after a bit of percussive maintenance about the head and shoulders of Captain Gusta, I head to Light of Heart to rearm with IBL's. Getting there, I find a problem. I haven't got the cargo space. So, since DW/H is there already, I dump the tons of crap I've picked up over the time I've been flying around, and also dump off quite a few passengers onto some TP's called in for the job.

Armed again with a full compliment of 16 IBL's and ready to rock, I roll out and refill my cargo space with crew. But this particular Military Transporter, has a surprise. TWO Machinists. One of these is destined for Venomous Cobra, now at the Aladna Hill Military Outpost, and the other is destined for Rapscallion, where ever the hell it was I last parked it at. Come to think of it, that's a bloody good question. Where did I park that?

Chapter 99: A feeling of Dreadnought

When last we left our daring heroine, or rather our mighty pirate wench, she was wondering where she parked her destroyer. One of them at least.

I know it's around here somewhere. Property Menu, I call upon thee, tell me what I done with it?

Patriarch's Conclusion? Good, fine. Phew. Alright, that sorted, it's first to Aladna Hill to deliver Machinist Suzann Sillarn to Venomous Cobra, and Mak Gisler to Rapscallion. Why that way? Because I've got a Split Mechanic in the Med Bay with a dislocated shoulder. He tried to push past Suzann and she did that to him. Since Venomous Cobra is primarily Split crewed, it's a good fit. Mak Gisler is a bit shy and retiring, and a crack shot with a pistol. So he'll fit in better on Rapscallion which is mostly Argon, and Teladi. See, Split like up close and personal, thus the knives. Argon and Teladi prefer to shoot. Naturally there are exceptions, like Ms. Sillarn, who like to be different, but they tend to be a bit rare.

Anyway, so you might be wondering just what I'm up to today. Well, I have three goals. The first of these is the location and capture of a Split Heavy Dragon, to act as a replacement for Wyvern. I'm going to assign two of my combat pilots as captains of these ships. Uma Yatar, and Keppel will remain with the Unsuspected, though each is going to be getting their own Corvette. Ideally, I'd like them in something fast, agile, and well armed. Given their proclivities for breaking the ships I give them however, I'm thinking a pair of Heavy Ospreys are better. However, A) I don't want to annoy the Teladi any further than I have to, since I still plan on jacking some Gannets for the assault on Paranid Prime, but B) with only 18 million credits, I don't have the funds to buy and outfit two Heavy Corvettes.

Thus to piracy I turn. It seems that there's no movement at all in Ianamus Zura, so I'm going to have Gunboat Diplomacy resume the station. Cobra and I are going hunting. Oh, that plan to jack the Aquilo from the Boreas group? Bust, they slipped through while I was busy cleaning up the mess around Barren Shores. And with the number of my ships there, and their ships, and the firepower represented, not to mention the investiture in Stations, I'm not about to start a fight in Legend's Home.

So I'm going to look for a Destroyer to steal. A scouting report of one passing down through Ceo's Doubt, headed for Faded Dreams, possibly to investigate what happened to the one I stole not that long ago, suggests that it's rate of travel is right to put it in the middle of Mi-Tons or somewhere south. Either works for me, though should it get through into the Paranid sectors, I'll have to snap it up in Contorted again. Honestly, I kind of like working in Contorted Dominion. It's a nice wide open sector, and as long as I'm stealing Boron ships, there's no complaints from the authorities. Or at least as long as I don't get between the target and the station. Split are such spectators, particularly of violence. I love them.

Catching up with the Ray as it approaches the south gate, it's a no-go. Not only is it packing ISL, and HPD, but also 12 marines. Umm... I guess they got tired of some mysterious figure stealing their warships. Nuts...

Well, it's not too bad. Family Rhy is off to the west of the main Split sectors, and has a Heavy Dragon. I arrive in sector just as the Heavy Dragon leaves. However, there's a Python in the sector which goes down relatively easily. 70% hull isn't perfect, but seeing as this is a B-team, I'm not expecting miracles, and besides, I still get 43 million for it, right there at the Family Rhy Shipyard. I rather like Family Rhy. They don't hold things like that against me. A play for a Boron Heavy Hydra doesn't go so well. I spot it heading through into Wretched Skies, and jump in to try and snatch it. Unfortunately, missile captures don't work so well on Corvettes, particularly not those that are under shielded. It's not a bad plan. One Hammer and 3 Flails should reduce it to boarding in short order. It's not to be, and instead a bad hit from one of it's escorts, trying to burn off the Flails with a PBG, causes it to go up in smoke. And seriously annoy it's escorts. There's more than I thought, and they decide to remove me. Sadly, it's a swarm of fighters, against a ship designed specifically for the purpose of erasing swarms of fighters from existence. 2 Barrages does the job nicely, and with nothing else in range to chase, they give up and die as soon as the last of the Fish have been rendered to paste.

But it seems a good day to seriously annoy the Split because I'm about to jack the Rhonkar's Clouds Panther, and then it's Heavy Dragon Escort. How? First I'm going to tick off the Panther, by shoving missiles up it's nose, then running. It's only got the Heavy Dragon, and a single Mamba Sentinel. Snake in the Roids is waiting in the wings to drop in and party with the HD.

I'm sure there's a better way, and possibly someone, somewhere has advice on how precisely to deal with a Panther/Heavy Dragon capture, but they're not here, and this is how I'm going to do it.

Well, how I'm going to try at least. Seven marines die taking the panther, all Teladi oddly, and at the end of it, I'm rather unenthused by the idea of taking another Split ship. But I give it a shot, deciding that with 600MJ of shields, that this will be easier than the Panther. This is a falsehood, as it shoots down both boarding pods, and kills two marines before I can grind him into shavings. The Panther is in pretty good shape, and Jump Boa drops in with a Chimera I picked up somewhere, and after a short interlude of waiting it's away to dock with Command and Control for repairs. Guard Dog is busy looking menacing in the direction of the Paranid and Pirates in Barren Shores, Mahi Ma's outrageous demands are ticking down through their last 20,000 units. All is right in the Drakhar Empire.

And yet I can't shake a feeling of dread. I'm not sure what's wrong either, it's just some thing that doesn't seem right.

Unsuspected is waiting in Patriarch's Conclusion. Jump Boa, Venomous Cobra and I head down there. It's been a while, and Unsuspected needs some maintenance. I'm going to give the crew a holiday here in Pat's Conclusion, and let them avail themselves of the services available on the Trading Station and EQD. Delivery Wagon/Hub will drop in and strip the equipment off the Unsuspected to keep it out of the way of the techs as they work the ship over. Stem to Stern boys. I don't want a thing to get in the way. The Colossus has arrived to take up the fighters on board. The pilots will fly over, and then be taken to the EQD and Trading Station.

Unsuspected looks lonely, sitting there in space, waiting for the Techs to arrive the following morning. I transport aboard Amazon, and fly over, deciding to spend the night, and ease my mind that she's not alone.
