As you may have read, the upcoming Superbox will contain all X Games. This includes X-Beyond the Frontier and X-Tension. We have some new EXE files for these two games which has removed their copy protection. We would like some users to help us in testing them.
What to test
When posting results, everyone should add a DXDiag.
The changes in these new EXE files include:
Copy Protection removed
Higher resolutions selectable
Let us know if any of the following occurs:
You are unable to run the game
You are unable to start the game without the CD in the drive
You find any effects of the Copy Protection such as:
credits being halved from your account after several hours
you can't trade with Shipyards
your ship exploding at sector change or docking
a higher amount of enemy ships spawned in your sector
in XbtF, the Terran training ship in the first scene is easily destroyed
Happy testing!

Come watch me on Twitch where I occasionally play several of the X games
So far so good. Both .exe's run and loads old games without the cd (Xgold).
Only problem - XTension screen is clipped at the bottom on a 1600x900 screen.
Maverick: Requesting permission for flyby.
Air Boss Johnson: That's a negative ghostrider, the pattern is full.
Goose: No. No, Mav, this is not a good idea.
Maverick: Sorry Goose, but it's time to buzz a Split.
Split: Split now give you .... Aaaarrriiiigh.
I've been testing BTF pretty thoroughly, and the only issue I can find that wasn't in the older EXE is that sometimes, when I dock at a Split Trading Port, I get the Paranid welcome message for the Paranid Trading Dock. I loaded my game on the older EXE and didn't appear to have that issue.
Other than that, the new EXE works great.
X-TENSION results will be edited in once I get a chance to test.
I have tested both .exe's with my copy of X Gold, found no issues so far. The CD wasn't needed in either case and the games seemed to run with no noticeable errors. Saves from the original .exe for BTF appear to be compatible with the new .exe.
I didn't have any saves for x-Tension available for testing with the new .exe

The End. 2:35h into the game.
Save works normally with a regular 2.1a xtension.
edit:
in XbtF, the Terran training ship in the first scene is easily destroyed
Now i remember, that happened too. Touched the ring, dead. So i guess XbfF .exe is affected too. CD was always present in all cases.

I'm still looking for my copies to test this out, not easy to find after a house move with boxes of games everywhere lol. i had one issue with a previous version on xp that someone would maybe check ( in case i cant find my copies) It was x-btf and after upgrading speed and rudder tunings quite a lot, the ship would randomly go crazy and start spinning on the spot, only way to resolve it was to quit the game and restart.

With this new version? Crazy spinning is usually caused by misconfigured joystick settings in Windows.. I never had such issue. Then again my joystick collects dust somewhere for a long time already.
Edit:
Btw do i have to start a new game now? The game obviously thought i cheated. Will it have any further consequences, now that i reverted back to regular files?
Its unknown whether it happens with these new .exes as currently i cant find my discs to test it, and the same joystick configurations played fine on reunion for 6 months at the time, hence me wanting to test or asking someone to test for this issue if i cannot find my cd's.

OK guys here is my report on the new EXE files for X-BTF and Xtension
In X-BTF I only found one problem the throttle does not work on my Logitech Extreme 3D Pro joystick. I also have a Saitek ST290Pro joystick and oddly enough I tried it and the throttle works with it. The only difference is the the Saitek joystick did not come with any software to install in order to use it. the Logitech joystick did, I tried both with and with out this software and came up with the same results. I remember having this same issue with Windows XP and a MS Sidewinder Force Feed Back Joystick I had a few years back. So this might be a DirectX Issue.
Note: this issue does not exist in Xtension, both joysticks work as expected there, the throttles are fine.
That's it, only problem I ran into.
I was playing with out the original disc for X-BTF. Before trying these EXE's, with the X-BTF disc in the CD Drive I was getting a message in Xtension that the game could not verify the original disc and then it would kick me out. I have had these disc since they both came out and this only stated happening in Xtension when I made the move to Win XP, But the new EXE for Xtension seems to fix this issue.
EDIT: Oops, found something, I tried loading an existing save I had for X-Tension, the save had me in Nyana's Hideout looking for the Prometheus Prototype. As soon as I went through the gate to Omicron Lyra I get a message stating "X-Tension executable file has been manipulated,,,Exiting!", then it takes me back to the game menu. I reloaded and tried a different gate and had the same results. So I then tried other save that I have, all at different points through the game, same thing, enter a gate and get the message. Next, I thought maybe using the Jumpdrive to get to the sector might work. When I tried that, the game minimizes and I get a window asking me to insert the X-BTF CD, if I do and hit retry I get the above message about the EXE file.If I hit cancel, the game closes.
However, this did not happen when I start a new game.
Save games for X-BTF do not seem to be affected by this issue.

Everything works ok, except i can throttle with my joystick (logitech extreme 3D pro). I do not have another joystick to test.
* You are unable to run the game = No
* You are unable to start the game without the CD in the drive = No
* You find any effects of the Copy Protection such as:
o credits being halved from your account after several hours = No
o you can't trade with Shipyards = No
o your ship randomly exploding = No
o a higher amount of enemy ships spawned in your sector = No
o in XbtF, the Terran training ship in the first scene is easily destroyed = No
Another problem(?) is that i can't redefine the control keys. Actually i can't erase/delete anything in the boxes, so i can leave them empty.
Also i don't have surround sound (5.1) from my speakers.
I do not know if these two issues are actually "bugs"/problems because have past many years since the last time i have played the game so i can't remember exactly if i had such "problems".

I have the gold but I find while xbtf plays well in windows 7 Xtension will not start complains of video incompatibility. I notice that two guys at least can play Xtension in windows 7. I did post in another thread but no cure seems to be found. otherwise I would love to take part.

If you have a video incompatibility, that's one of the best reasons to post your dxdiag report as those above did. That way, Egosoft can see what problems people are having. It doesn't help to simply say it doesn't work on your system. They need data.
Have a great idea for the current or a future game? You can post it in the [L3+] Ideas forum.
X4 is a journey, not a destination. Have fun on your travels.
Just got the X-Gold box because I'm getting a netbook and it'd be great to have some decent old-spec games. Saw this thread while looking for answers to my other issues (see below) and saw that they were no-cd patches (which would mean I wouldn't need to cart around the external DVD drive).
Thing is, I first put the games on my Vista main PC and am having a few problems.
X-Tension: Installer on the CD says "Fatal error. Cannot find EXE to launch (E:\XTension/setup.exe). So found it myself and ran it. Did the first patch OK. Second patch (21 to 21a) is mainly fine but got "Unexpected file size: Could not patch file (blah blah) XTension.exe. Got exactly the same issue with the download patch above. Tried to run it, it wants the CD. X-Tension won't run with the CD - I get a flicker of a logo and then it says "Error opening video. Check your display settings!". Tried compatibility mode, administrator, running it as a WinXP program, all the usual business. Nothing works.
X:BTF works OK from the disc version. Tried to use the patch download above but got "Could not patch file (blah blah) xdx6.exe). X.exe patched fine. Try to run either X or XDX6 and it wants the disc. But it does run it, unlike X-Tension.
DX-Diag report: (I like the idea of calling your PC "Mother". Mine is a film reference (of course) and year of purchase)

Did you replace the original EXE with the new one? The NoCD Patch is not a patch in the usual way - it's just a patched EXE file which you have to launch instead of the installed one.

Ah didn't fully understand that. Will give the EXE files a try. Still can't get the patches to work properly though; when I run them they start up a Zip unpacking/installer, which does what I described. It doesn't unpack the relevant EXE files saying the file sizes aren't right.
