Increasing your trade rank gets you access to better mission and better payouts. You will also get more for ships that you sell with higher ranks. A great thing to have for all things TC is

Killing people. Seriously, the economy in TC is horribly crippled. If you want to buy something like that, it's unlikely you'll find more than 5-10 in the entire galaxy unless you're lucky.
